Tesla has reportedly canceled its planned Cybertruck Range Extender before the accessory reached customers. In an email to reservation holders reproduced by Electrek, Tesla said: “We are no longer planning to sell the Range Extender for Cybertruck.” The reported email also promised full refunds of the $2,000 deposits.
Did Tesla cancel the Cybertruck Range Extender?
According to Electrek’s report, Tesla told customers who had reserved the accessory that it was no longer planning to sell it. The cancellation was communicated in a customer email attributed to “The Tesla Team”; no individual speaker or role was named. This is a reported customer communication, not a public statement in which Tesla described the decision as an admission.
The proposed Range Extender had not launched when Tesla reportedly canceled it. Customers who had paid the reported $2,000 reservation deposit were told it would be refunded in full. Electrek’s report on the cancellation and email.
What the Range Extender was supposed to do
It was a separate battery pack designed to sit in the Cybertruck’s bed—not a gasoline-powered generator or an onboard fuel system. Electrek reported a planned price of $16,000 and said the pack would take up roughly one-third of the bed. The added range therefore came with a substantial loss of cargo space, as well as the accessory’s cost.

Electrek reported that Tesla had once described a dual-motor configuration with the extra pack as capable of more than 470 miles, then revised the figure to more than 445 miles. Those were plans for a configuration that never reached sale, not verified range results from a customer-delivered accessory. How the original range target compares with later reported figures
The Cybertruck’s original top-trim target and the later reported figures refer to different points in the product’s history. They should not be read as a current 2026 range or price list.

Electrek reported 325 miles for the dual-motor Cybertruck and 320 miles for the tri-motor Cyberbeast on May 7, 2025. Those are historical figures from that report, not a verified current specification for every Cybertruck or a 2026 configurator snapshot. The cancellation means the planned supplemental pack cannot be counted as an available way to reach the proposed 445-plus-mile figure.
