Consumer Reports’ 2026 results put Tesla ninth for new-car reliability but 26th for used-car reliability, while a reported $832 annual average is a broad estimate—not a quote for any particular Tesla. Routine maintenance is comparatively limited, but that does not mean failures are rare or repairs are inexpensive.
Are Teslas reliable?
The current survey picture is mixed, and the new-car and used-car rankings describe different groups of vehicles. Consumer Reports’ 2026 brand page places Tesla ninth for new-car reliability and 26th for used-car reliability. Those positions are not contradictory measurements of identical cars: the page’s new-car reliability and cost rankings do not include used-car reliability or maintenance and repair costs in that new-car basis. See Consumer Reports’ Tesla brand page.
What the 2026 new-car survey says
Consumer Reports’ December 4, 2025 report drew on information about 380,000 vehicles, covering 2000–2025 model years and a few early 2026 models. Tesla moved up eight places to ninth. In the survey, Model 3 was the most reliable electric car and Model Y the most reliable electric SUV; Model S and Model X were rated average, while Cybertruck was below average. These results describe the survey’s vehicles and trouble areas, not a guarantee for an individual car. Consumer Reports also notes that the kinds of problems counted vary by powertrain. Read its 2026 reliability findings.
Other reliability measures are not interchangeable
ConsumerAffairs, in an article updated October 2, 2026, reports a J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Survey result of 226 problems per 100 vehicles for 2023 Tesla model-year vehicles, against a 204 average. ConsumerAffairs says Tesla’s standing is unofficial because Tesla does not share some consumer information with J.D. Power. A problems-per-100-vehicles score is not the chance that a particular Tesla will fail, and it is not a repair-cost measure. It should not be blended with Consumer Reports’ survey rankings as if the studies measured the same thing. See ConsumerAffairs’ Tesla reliability overview.

Are Teslas expensive to repair?
There is no single repair bill that represents every Tesla. ConsumerAffairs reports RepairPal’s all-Tesla annual repair and maintenance average as $832, compared with $652 across all brands. These are broad reported averages, not model-specific quotes or a prediction of what an owner will spend in a given year. ConsumerAffairs notes that Tesla-specific model estimates are limited.
Use the figure as a rough comparison point, not a budget guarantee. A specific expense depends on the model and year, age, mileage, condition, damage, whether the work is covered by warranty and where the car is serviced. The available figures do not establish a representative lifetime ownership total or a distribution of Tesla repair bills.

Recalls are a separate measure
NHTSA’s 2026 annual report lists 679,242 Tesla vehicles remedied by over-the-air updates in 2025. The count covers recalls at least partly remedied through OTA updates; it does not measure ordinary failures, repair invoices or owner downtime. A recall-remedy count therefore should not be used as a reliability ranking. See NHTSA’s annual recall reports.
How much does Tesla maintenance cost?
Tesla says its vehicles are generally serviced as needed and do not require traditional oil changes or fuel-system maintenance. That lighter routine schedule is different from the cost of repairing a failed or damaged component. The company’s Model 3 guidance still includes cabin-filter replacement, tire rotation, brake-fluid checks and, in areas that use winter road salt, brake-caliper cleaning. Recommendations can change with model, year, use and environment, so consult the vehicle’s Maintenance Summary rather than treating one schedule as universal.

Model 3 guidance is not a universal Tesla schedule
Tesla’s Model 3 service documentation lists the following recommendations and cautions that actual needs can vary with driving behavior and environment. Check the Model 3 owner’s manual service guidance and the car’s own Maintenance Summary for applicable details.
| Item | Model 3 guidance |
|---|---|
| Cabin air filter | Replace every two years |
| Tire rotation | Every 6,250 miles or when tread-depth difference reaches 2/32 inch |
| Brake-fluid health | Check every four years |
| Brake-caliper cleaning | Annually or every 12,500 miles in areas where roads are salted in winter |
These intervals are the Model 3 documentation’s recommendations, not a cost estimate or a schedule for every Tesla. For your vehicle, use the in-car Maintenance Summary and its model- and year-specific documentation.

What warranty coverage can reduce repair costs?
Tesla’s current support page lists a basic warranty of four years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. Battery and drive-unit coverage depends on model and configuration; the page lists eight-year terms with mileage limits from 100,000 to 150,000 miles for the configurations shown, and states a 70% minimum battery-capacity retention during the battery warranty period. Coverage for an individual car depends on its warranty document and purchase date, so verify the vehicle’s VIN-specific terms rather than relying on a general summary. See Tesla’s vehicle warranty information.
Tesla says warranty work must be performed at a Tesla Service Center. For non-warranty maintenance and repairs, owners may use Tesla or a preferred non-Tesla service center; Tesla warns it is not responsible for problems caused by improper third-party repairs. This permission does not mean every independent shop can perform every Tesla repair.

How to assess a Tesla before buying or budgeting
Compare the actual car, not just the brand-level ranking or annual average. These checks help separate survey evidence, likely routine service and the costs that may fall on you.
- Identify the exact model and model year. Survey findings differ by model and generation; the 2026 Consumer Reports results, for example, distinguish Model 3 and Model Y from Cybertruck, Model S and Model X.
- Assess age and condition separately from new-car rankings. A new-car prediction does not tell you the condition of a used vehicle. Review its service history and have its condition assessed before purchase.
- Confirm warranty coverage for the VIN. Check the vehicle’s warranty documents and app, including the remaining basic coverage and battery and drive-unit mileage limits.
- Review the car’s maintenance recommendations. Use its Maintenance Summary and model-specific manual; do not assume Model 3 intervals apply to another Tesla.
- Check repair access where you live. Ask a service provider about the specific work and vehicle before relying on it. Tesla’s public service site publishes repair and maintenance information, manuals, parts catalogs, wiring diagrams and DIY guides, but available information is not proof that every shop is equipped for every job. See Tesla Service.
- Distinguish an average from a quote. A broad all-brand or all-Tesla figure is not a model-specific estimate; obtain an itemized quote for the actual repair and clarify whether warranty coverage applies.
The practical verdict
Tesla’s limited routine service schedule can make scheduled maintenance simpler than that of a conventional combustion car, but it does not settle reliability or repair affordability. The available evidence shows stronger recent new-car survey results alongside a lower used-car ranking, plus broad cost figures that cannot predict an individual owner’s bill. For a sound decision, anchor the comparison in the specific model year, the car’s condition, remaining warranty and credible access to the repairs it may need.
