If you want an adventure motorcycle for long trips that can still handle rough roads, start with how and where you ride—not a universal “best” ranking. A road-focused crossover, a middleweight tourer and a tall, off-road-oriented machine make different comfort and performance trade-offs. This shortlist spans all three, with model years and markets identified because the specifications are not directly interchangeable.
Seat shape, width, suspension sag, wind exposure, luggage and riding time all affect comfort; published seat height alone cannot predict whether a bike will fit you. Honda XL750 Transalp
The Transalp is the conventional middleweight choice in this Honda group. It may suit a rider who wants an adventure-bike format without moving to the Africa Twin’s larger class. Check the actual seat and wind protection on your intended trim: the brochure’s dimensions cannot tell you whether its shape works for your body or touring posture.
Honda NC750X
Consider the NC750X if most of your miles will be on paved roads and you prefer a crossover orientation. Its lower listed seat height may make it worth trying for riders who find taller adventure bikes awkward at stops, but seat width and suspension sag still affect reach. The manual and DCT versions have different listed weights.

The X-ADV brings adventure styling and DCT convenience to a crossover rather than offering the same format as a long-travel adventure motorcycle. It is most relevant if that combination matches your commute and paved-road touring; judge its suitability for rough routes by the riding you actually plan, not its styling alone.
Which options lean toward rougher roads or lighter adventure riding?
KTM 390 Adventure R and India-market 390 Adventure
These are distinct specifications. The US-market 2026 R lists a 21/18-inch wheel arrangement and adjustable suspension. The India-market 2025 390 Adventure release instead describes tubeless 21/17-inch wheels, long-travel adjustable suspension and cruise control. Choose based on the precise local trim rather than assuming equipment from one market carries over to another.

Honda CRF300 Rally
The CRF300 Rally’s relatively low published kerb weight is appealing if you prioritize a smaller machine, but its high listed seat height is an important fit check. Ducati DesertX V2

Honda NX500
The NX500 is a smaller-capacity option for riders who want adventure styling and touring-oriented features without moving into the larger-engine group. The 2025 European brochure highlights rally-spec wind protection, a connected TFT display and Showa USD forks. First define your typical route. A motorcycle optimized for paved touring may be easier to live with on everyday roads, while off-road-oriented wheel and suspension setups are aimed at different terrain. Engine output alone does not tell you which will be more comfortable or capable for your use.
- Check fit in person: assess reach to the ground, seat width, standing posture and how the suspension settles with your weight. A listed seat height is only one part of fit.
- Match equipment to terrain: compare wheel configuration, suspension travel and adjustability, ground clearance and rider aids for the surfaces you actually ride.
- Assess touring exposure: try the riding position and windscreen at realistic speeds, and account for luggage and passenger plans.
- Compare weights carefully: kerb weight, wet weight without fuel and dry weight are different measures. Do not treat them as a like-for-like ranking.
- Confirm the exact model: check year, market, trim, transmission and accessory compatibility with the local manufacturer before purchase.
