Tesla’s recall covers 63,619 potentially involved Cybertrucks because vehicle-controller software could make the front parking lamps brighter than federal limits allow. The free fix is an over-the-air update: software version 2025.38.3 or later corrects the output, and Tesla says owners whose vehicles already have that version do not need to take further action. Check your VIN to confirm whether your Cybertruck is included.
Which Cybertrucks are included?
NHTSA campaign 25V699, listed by Tesla as recall SB-25-00-008, covers certain model-year 2024, 2025 and 2026 Cybertrucks manufactured from November 13, 2023, through October 11, 2025, and running software earlier than 2025.38.3. Tesla reported 63,619 potentially involved vehicles in its filing to NHTSA.
The filing gives an estimated defect rate of 100% within that potentially involved population. That is Tesla’s estimate for vehicles in scope—not a count of owners who noticed a lighting symptom. Use a VIN lookup to check an individual truck; the population figures alone do not establish whether a particular VIN is affected. NHTSA’s recall lookup and Tesla’s recall page provide ways to check.
What is the defect, and what is the safety concern?
The issue is the front parking-lamp intensity, not a finding that all Cybertruck headlamps are too bright. Tesla told NHTSA that vehicle-controller software could inadvertently command the lamps above the maximum photometric intensity permitted by Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 108. Tesla and its lamp supplier conducted photometric tests on October 3 and 6, 2025, and measured output above that limit.
#1 Best Overall
- High-definition LED optics project a crisp Cybertruck-style logo on the ground the moment the door opens, adding a unique visual welcome every time you enter or exit the vehicle.
- Designed as a direct replacement for the original door courtesy lights. Installation takes just a few minutes with no cutting or rewiring required — ideal for quick upgrades.
- While adding style, the projected light also brightens the entry area, helping you and passengers step out more comfortably in dim environments such as garages or parking lots.
- The housing and LED components are built to deliver consistent brightness over extended use. A stable lighting module ensures the projection stays clear over time.
- Sized and shaped to fit the Cyberuck's door light position for a clean, OEM-like finish. A simple customization that elevates the futuristic character of your truck.
Excessive brightness could distract other drivers or reduce the visibility of oncoming drivers, increasing the risk of a collision. NHTSA’s October 22, 2025, acknowledgement letter put it this way: “Parking lights that are too bright can reduce visibility of oncoming drivers, increasing the risk of a crash.”
In its October 14, 2025, filing, Tesla reported zero related warranty claims and zero field reports as of October 13, and said it knew of no related collisions, injuries or fatalities. Tesla’s support article also says the company was not aware of crashes, injuries or deaths related to the condition. These are Tesla’s reported figures and status, not an independent finding that no incident has occurred.

How to check whether your Cybertruck needs the update
- Check the VIN: Enter your vehicle identification number in Tesla’s recall lookup or NHTSA’s recall lookup. The lookup is the way to determine campaign eligibility for your specific vehicle.
- Check the installed software: On the touchscreen, open Controls > Software. Tesla says the version is also shown at the bottom of the vehicle’s home screen in the Tesla app.
- Compare the version: Version 2025.38.3 or later is the corrected software. If the VIN lookup shows the recall and the vehicle has an earlier version, allow the free over-the-air remedy to install.
A software version check does not replace the VIN lookup: the recall records establish eligibility by vehicle, while the installed version tells you which software is currently on the truck.
What is the remedy, and do you need a service appointment?
Tesla’s remedy is a free over-the-air update that adjusts parking-lamp output to comply with FMVSS 108 photometry requirements. Tesla says no service appointment is needed for the update. Owners whose vehicles already have version 2025.38.3 or later need take no further action for this issue.

- October 1, 2025: Tesla says an internal review identified the possibility that controller software could command parking-lamp intensity above design specifications.
- October 3 and 6, 2025: Tesla and the lamp supplier conducted photometric tests that found output above the FMVSS 108 maximum.
- October 7, 2025: Tesla decided to conduct a voluntary recall after its investigation identified the scope.
- October 9, 2025: Tesla’s report says it began the no-charge over-the-air remedy.
- October 14, 2025: Tesla submitted its Part 573 report to NHTSA.
- October 22, 2025: NHTSA issued its acknowledgement letter for campaign 25V699. It and Tesla’s report listed December 13, 2025, as the planned owner-notification date.
The planned notification date is not a substitute for checking your vehicle: only the recall lookup can show whether a particular VIN is listed, and it does not establish whether that vehicle has completed the update.
