That is an allegation, not a court finding that Tesla odometers are inaccurate or that the company intentionally manipulated them. The latest procedural update located is a June 2026 report that a judge granted Tesla’s motion to dismiss; the underlying order and later docket activity have not been verified.
What the Tesla odometer lawsuit alleges
Nyree Hinton filed a proposed class action against Tesla, Inc. and Tesla Finance LLC. The complaint says Tesla odometers over-register mileage, potentially causing owners to reach mileage-based warranty limits sooner, incur lease mileage charges, and receive less when reselling their vehicles. Those are claims in the pleading, not established effects. Read the complaint.
The complaint alleges that Hinton’s Tesla recorded between 15% and 117% more mileage than her other vehicles over comparable periods. A separate report describes Hinton as the owner of a used 2020 Model Y and says the complaint attributed 13,228 miles to the vehicle over six months. What the complaint says about how the readings are calculated
The plaintiffs’ proposed technical theory is that Tesla’s odometer system uses predictive algorithms, energy-consumption metrics, and driver-behavior multipliers. The complaint points to patent US8054038B2 as part of that theory. This is the plaintiffs’ characterization; the cited patent does not, by itself, establish how production Tesla vehicles calculate odometer readings or prove that the alleged method is used. Where the case stands
The action was removed to the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California on April 2, 2025, as case 2:25-cv-02877-MEMF-AJR. A LegalClarity article dated June 23, 2026, reports that a judge granted Tesla’s motion to dismiss. Because that report does not include the court’s order and later docket activity has not been verified, it should be treated as a reported ruling rather than a definitive account of the case’s current disposition. The case is a proposed class action; the available sources do not establish that a class was certified or that the allegations were proven. They also do not establish a Tesla technical response, a regulator’s finding, or an independent study confirming an odometer error rate.

What Tesla owners can do if they are concerned
Owners who want to document a mileage concern can keep dated service invoices, warranty communications, lease paperwork, and contemporaneous trip records. These may help preserve a personal record, but they do not determine whether an odometer is accurate or resolve the lawsuit’s allegations. Separate GPS or trip logs should likewise be treated as records for comparison, not proof of odometer error; the sources cited here do not establish that a consumer device can diagnose or correct a Tesla odometer.
