There is no single winner for every Australian buyer. The 2025 BYD Sealion 7 Premium is the range-and-equipment choice on its published figures, while the 2025 Sealion 7 Performance trades some range for all-wheel drive and much stronger acceleration. A 2026 Tesla Model Y may suit you better if its current configuration, software, charging access and ownership terms fit your use. Compare the exact model year, trim, drivetrain, price basis and range test cycle before signing a contract.
What this comparison actually covers
This is a comparison of the Australian-market 2026 Tesla Model Y as represented in current comparison listings, against the 2025 BYD Sealion 7 Premium and 2025 BYD Sealion 7 Performance described in BYD Automotive Group Australia’s specification material. Model-year labels, prices, equipment and availability can change, so use the official configurators and the latest brochures for the vehicle you are ordering.

The Sealion 7 figures below come from BYD’s 2025 Australian specification brochure. BYD also publishes a 2026 brochure; check its individual variant columns rather than assuming an item applies to every version. Tesla’s Australian page warns that actual range and charging performance vary with charger type, vehicle configuration, state of charge, battery temperature, speed, weather and elevation.
Key specifications at a glance
| Vehicle | Drive | Battery | Claimed range | Output and torque | 0–100 km/h | Seats |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 BYD Sealion 7 Premium | Rear-wheel drive | 82.56 kWh Blade battery | 482 km WLTP combined | 230 kW, 380 Nm | 6.7 seconds | Five |
| 2025 BYD Sealion 7 Performance | All-wheel drive | Battery capacity not separately stated in the cited brochure summary | 456 km WLTP combined | 390 kW, 690 Nm | 4.5 seconds | Five |
| 2026 Tesla Model Y | Varies by current configuration | Varies by current configuration | Confirm the exact variant and test cycle | Confirm the exact variant | Confirm the exact variant | Configuration-dependent |
The BYD range numbers are laboratory WLTP figures, not a promise of kilometres in Australian traffic. BYD says driving style, load and traffic affect range and describes the declared figure as an estimate for reference. Tesla gives the same practical warning in different terms on its Australian Model Y page.

- 【PRECISE FIT FOR 2025-2026 MODEL Y JUNIPER】: Custom-designed for 5-seat Tesla Model Y Juniper Premium and Performance models. Not compatible with Model Y Standard, Model Y L, or 7-seat configurations. Please verify your vehicle version before ordering (You can refer to the third image in the main product gallery to verify compatibility)
- 【IMPORTANT: SHIPPING CREASE RECOVERY】: Due to compact packaging during shipping, your floor mats or cargo liners may arrive with temporary folds or creases. This is normal and does not indicate a product defect. Please see our dedicated crease recovery video in the main product video section for step-by-step instructions. Simply unroll the mats, lay them flat in a warm environment, and allow them to recover naturally. For stubborn creases, gently warm the affected area with a hair dryer on low heat while smoothing it by hand. Do not use high heat or place the heat source directly against the mat. Most creases will gradually disappear with proper recovery and normal use.
- 【8-PIECE FULL-CABIN PROTECTION】: Includes front and rear floor mats, Integrated Trunk and Seatback Mat, frunk mat, rear storage mat, and trunk bumper protector. One complete set helps protect more of your Tesla Model Y interior from daily dirt, spills, and wear.

- 【PREMIUM TPE WITH COMFORTABLE 3-LAYER DESIGN】: Made from odorless, flexible TPE that is soft yet durable. The multi-layer construction provides waterproof, anti-slip, and sound-dampening performance while maintaining a clean, factory-inspired look.
Prices: why the published numbers do not line up
Prices need a date, a variant and a basis. A before-on-road price cannot be compared directly with a driveaway price, and a broad model range does not tell you what the trim you want costs.
| Source and vehicle | Displayed price | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| CarsGuide, 2026 Model Y | A$58,900–A$89,400 | Range displayed by the comparison publisher; accessed in 2026. Trim, destination charges and price basis need confirmation. |
| CarsGuide, 2025 Sealion 7 | A$46,990–A$68,888 | Range displayed by CarsGuide; accessed in 2026. It is not a guaranteed current quote. |
| CarExpert, selected 2026 Model Y Premium RWD | A$63,963 driveaway | Driveaway snapshot for the selected variant. |
| CarExpert, selected 2025 Sealion 7 Premium | A$59,857 driveaway | Driveaway snapshot for the selected variant. |
These figures are useful for understanding the market positioning, not for writing a cheque. Before comparing, request written driveaway quotes for the same state or territory, registration period, options and delivery timing. Confirm whether a demonstrator, demonstrator discount, stamp duty, registration, compulsory third-party insurance and dealer or delivery fees are included. Recheck Tesla’s live configuration and BYD’s current price list because the comparison pages are snapshots.
Range and battery: Premium has the longer listed distance
Sealion 7 Premium
BYD lists the Premium’s 82.56 kWh Blade battery and 482 km WLTP combined. Its rear-drive layout and lower output are part of the reason it has the longer listed range of the two Sealion 7 variants in this comparison.
Sealion 7 Performance
The Performance is listed at 456 km WLTP combined, 26 km less than the Premium, while adding all-wheel drive and a much higher power and torque rating. That is a trade, not a defect: buyers who value traction and acceleration may accept the shorter laboratory range.
Model Y
The available source material does not provide a complete, current Australian Model Y variant table that can be matched cleanly to those BYD numbers. CarsGuide displays a 681 km figure for a selected 2026 Model Y L, but its range cycle and exact configuration must be confirmed before comparing it with the Sealion 7’s WLTP results. Do not treat that figure as a universal Model Y range claim.
How to turn WLTP into a trip plan
- Use the WLTP number as a consistent laboratory reference, not as an expected highway distance.
- Allow for speed, temperature, rain, wind, hills, passengers, luggage, tyres and cabin heating or cooling.
- Map fast chargers on your regular routes and identify a backup site before travelling.
- Ask for the exact battery, wheel and tyre configuration because those can alter the approved figure.
Charging and home electricity
Sealion 7 charging hardware
BYD specifies an 11 kW Type 2 AC connection and CCS2 DC charging up to 150 kW for the Sealion 7. The brochure also says a Mode 2 portable cable is included. That cable can be useful from a suitable domestic outlet, but it is not a substitute for a properly assessed wall charger when you regularly charge at home.

Model Y charging
Tesla’s Australian Model Y page does not establish one charging rate for every 2026 configuration in the material used here. The car’s actual charging performance depends on the charger, vehicle configuration, state of charge, battery temperature, speed, weather and elevation. Confirm the onboard AC limit, DC peak, connector arrangement and the current Australian Supercharger or third-party network access for the exact car.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoosing a home setup
An 11 kW Type 2 wall charger is a relevant category to investigate for a Sealion 7 because it matches the vehicle’s stated AC capability. Have a licensed electrician assess switchboard capacity, cable distance, protection, solar integration and local electrical requirements. Check that any proposed unit is compatible with the exact Model Y as well as the Sealion 7; do not buy on a generic “EV charger” label alone. Installation cost, tariffs and charging times depend on your property and electricity plan, so no universal dollar saving can be calculated from the vehicle specifications.
Performance and traction
| Measure | Sealion 7 Premium | Sealion 7 Performance | Model Y |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drivetrain | Rear-wheel drive | All-wheel drive | Depends on current configuration |
| Power | 230 kW | 390 kW | Exact 2026 figure not established in the cited material |
| Torque | 380 Nm | 690 Nm | Exact 2026 figure not established in the cited material |
| 0–100 km/h | 6.7 seconds | 4.5 seconds | Confirm the selected variant |
The Performance’s 4.5-second claim and 390 kW/690 Nm figures make its purpose clear: it is the acceleration and all-weather-traction option. AWD can be valuable on wet roads, loose surfaces or steep driveways, but it does not remove the need for appropriate tyres or sensible driving. The Premium’s 6.7-second figure is still brisk for a family SUV and comes with the longer listed WLTP range.
CarsGuide’s Sealion 7 Performance review describes strong equipment and output but says some technology needs refinement. That is a reviewer’s impression rather than a controlled comparison test. Arrange a long enough drive to assess accelerator calibration, regenerative braking, visibility, ride quality, screen response and driver-assistance behaviour on roads you actually use.
Size, seating and luggage space
Sealion 7 dimensions
BYD’s 2025 brochure lists the Sealion 7 at 4,830 mm long, 1,925 mm wide and 1,620 mm high, with a 2,930 mm wheelbase. Both Premium and Performance are five-seat variants. The Premium specification lists a 500-litre rear trunk and a 58-litre front trunk.

Why Model Y cargo claims need care
CarsGuide discusses a six-seat Model Y L layout. A six-seat reference is not a matched cargo measurement against a five-seat Sealion 7, and different seat positions, measurement methods and model configurations can change the result. Do not decide on luggage capacity from a headline litre figure alone.

Measure your own load
- Take the largest child seat, pram, cooler, suitcase or work equipment you carry.
- Set the driver’s seat for the tallest regular driver.
- Check rear-seat legroom with the child seats installed, not just an empty cabin.
- Measure the boot opening height and width and inspect the under-floor area.
- Confirm whether a spare wheel, charging cable and parcel shelf occupy useful space.
Also check kerbside width for your garage, turning space, roof clearance and the location of the charge port relative to your parking position. A vehicle that fits the brochure dimensions may still be awkward at home.
Equipment, software and everyday usability
The Sealion 7 brochure contains extensive equipment information, but the 2026 document requires checking the exact variant column before attributing a feature. Ask the dealer to demonstrate the features on the vehicle identification number you are buying rather than relying on a generic model page.
For the Model Y, verify the delivered hardware and software version, included charging equipment, phone-key behaviour, navigation routing, rear-seat provisions and the operation of driver-assistance features. Tesla’s online configuration can change without the physical car on a dealer forecourt changing with it.
During a test drive, test the tasks that matter more than a feature list: pairing two phones, adjusting the wheel and seat, opening the boot with hands full, finding a charging station, changing regenerative-braking or assistance settings, and silencing an alert without losing a safety function. If another family member will drive, have that person perform the same checks.
Warranty, safety and ownership evidence
Tesla basic vehicle warranty
Tesla states that its updated basic limited vehicle warranty applies to new Model 3 and Model Y vehicles delivered from 1 January 2026: five years and unlimited kilometres under normal use, subject to its terms, exclusions and limitations. This statement is for the basic vehicle warranty only. It should not be extended to the battery or drivetrain warranties; obtain those separate terms for the exact vehicle.
BYD warranty documents
The material used here does not establish a matching, current set of BYD vehicle, battery and drivetrain warranty terms against Tesla’s statement. Request the Australian warranty booklet and have the dealer identify coverage periods, kilometre limits, battery-capacity conditions, exclusions, servicing requirements, roadside assistance and transfer rules in writing.

Safety ratings
The available pages do not establish a matched, current independent safety rating for the exact 2026 Model Y and 2025 Sealion 7 variants. Do not infer that one is safer from equipment count, vehicle size or an overseas rating for a different model year. Check the current Australian assessment, its test date, body style, standard equipment and whether the rating applies to the precise variant you are ordering.

Running costs still need your numbers
No reliable matched dataset was established here for real-world efficiency, insurance, servicing, depreciation or total ownership cost. Obtain insurance quotes using the exact variant and postcode; ask for scheduled-service prices and intervals; compare your electricity tariff with public charging rates; and include tyres, registration, finance interest and likely resale period. A lower list price does not automatically produce a lower five-year cost.

Choose the Sealion 7 Premium if range and specification value lead
- You want the longer published WLTP figure: 482 km versus 456 km for the Performance.
- Rear-wheel drive meets your traction needs.
- The 230 kW, 380 Nm and 6.7-second claims are sufficient for your driving.
- You value the stated 82.56 kWh battery, 11 kW AC charging, up-to-150 kW CCS2 DC charging, five seats and listed 500 L rear plus 58 L front storage.
Choose the Sealion 7 Performance if acceleration and AWD matter
- You specifically want all-wheel drive.
- 390 kW, 690 Nm and a claimed 4.5-second 0–100 km/h time justify the 26 km WLTP trade-off for you.
- You have verified the equipment, tyres, insurance premium and warranty terms for the Performance rather than assuming the Premium’s details carry over.
Choose the Model Y only after matching the live configuration
- You have confirmed the exact 2026 trim’s price, range cycle, drivetrain, charging limits and included equipment.
- Tesla’s route planning, charging network access, software experience or body configuration is more useful to your household.
- The delivered vehicle’s warranty documents and local service arrangements meet your requirements.
A disciplined Australian buying checklist
- Write down the exact vehicle. Record model year, trim, drivetrain, wheel and tyre package, battery description and any option codes.
- Normalise the price. Get driveaway quotes for the same state or territory and the same registration and delivery assumptions.
- Normalise range. Compare WLTP with WLTP, and keep any other test cycle labelled rather than mixing figures.
- Check charging at home. Confirm the connector, onboard AC limit, switchboard capacity, cable route and whether a portable cable is included.
- Plan your public routes. Test the charging apps, payment method, charger locations and realistic winter or highway buffers.
- Test the cabin with your equipment. Fit child seats, luggage and charging cables before deciding that a cargo figure works.
- Read the contracts. Compare vehicle, battery and drivetrain warranties, servicing conditions, roadside assistance and exclusions.
- Price ownership. Obtain insurance, servicing, tyres, registration, finance and electricity estimates for your postcode.
- Verify safety evidence. Confirm the current independent assessment applies to the exact model year and variant.
- Recheck on order day. Tesla and BYD specifications, prices and availability can change; save the final written quote and specification sheet.
Frequently asked questions

The cited material does not provide a complete, matching 2026 Model Y acceleration specification, so a factual head-to-head answer is not possible. The Sealion 7 Premium is listed at 6.7 seconds from 0–100 km/h; the Performance is listed at 4.5 seconds.
Does the Sealion 7 come with a home charger?
BYD’s brochure says a Mode 2 portable cable is included. It does not establish that a permanently installed wall charger or installation service is included. Confirm the delivery equipment list and arrange electrical installation separately if required.
Can I compare the Model Y L’s 681 km figure with 482 km WLTP?
Not safely without confirming the Model Y L’s exact range test cycle, trim and configuration. The 681 km number is displayed by CarsGuide for a selected 2026 Model Y L, while the Sealion 7 figures are WLTP values from BYD’s 2025 brochure.

Which has the better safety rating?
The available evidence does not establish a current, matched independent rating for these exact model years and variants. Check the relevant Australian assessment before purchase rather than assuming a result from another market or model year.
The bottom line
For an Australian buyer choosing strictly from the published BYD figures, the 2025 Sealion 7 Premium is the rational range-and-equipment pick, while the 2025 Sealion 7 Performance is the choice for AWD and serious acceleration. The 2026 Model Y can be the better personal fit when its live trim, charging access, software and warranty terms match your routes and household. The right decision comes from a like-for-like driveaway quote, a confirmed range cycle, a home-charging plan and written warranty and safety information—not from a single headline number.
