Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor most buyers shopping new, the Tesla Model 3 is the practical choice: Tesla still lists it with multiple trims, while the company says Model S is no longer in production. Model S may make sense if a specific remaining or used example offers the space, performance, range or warranty you want at a price that works. Compare the exact car and trim—not just the model names.
What’s the difference between Model S and Model 3?
The biggest difference in the US market is purchase context. Tesla’s current Model S page says the car is no longer in production and notes that some pre-owned non-Signature Edition inventory may still be available. Tesla continues to present the Model 3 with multiple trims. Availability can differ by market, so check local listings and Tesla inventory.
That makes this less a simple new-versus-new comparison and more a choice between a new Model 3 and a particular remaining or used Model S. For a used Model S, assess its model year, mileage, condition, title, service history and warranty coverage before weighing its specifications against a Model 3 quote.
Model S vs. Model 3 specs: range, acceleration and charging
Tesla’s US product pages list the following figures as of October 8, 2026. Range figures are EPA estimates; acceleration and maximum charging power vary by trim. These are manufacturer-listed specifications, not guarantees of real-world performance.
#1 Best Overall
- Theme: Sport
- Toy vehicle form: Car
- Included components: Batteries
- Material: Metal
| Specification | Model S | Model 3 |
|---|---|---|
| EPA-estimated range | 368 miles for Model S Plaid (Tesla, US page accessed October 8, 2026) | 309–363 miles, depending on trim (Tesla, US page accessed October 8, 2026) |
| 0–60 mph acceleration | 1.99 seconds for Model S Plaid; Tesla says rollout is subtracted (Tesla, US page accessed October 8, 2026) | 2.9–5.8 seconds, depending on trim (Tesla, US page accessed October 8, 2026) |
| Maximum Supercharging power | 250 kW (Tesla, US page accessed October 8, 2026) | 225–250 kW, depending on trim (Tesla, US page accessed October 8, 2026) |
Range depends on the exact trim and your driving
On the listed figures, the Model S Plaid’s estimated 368 miles is slightly above the Model 3 page’s top listed figure of 363 miles. The Model 3 range span is broad enough that its specific trim matters. EPA estimates are useful for comparing configurations, but actual range can change with speed, weather, elevation and other conditions.
Peak charging power is not a session-time estimate
The listed maximum Supercharging power does not mean a car will charge at that rate throughout a stop. Tesla cautions that charging performance varies with Supercharger type, vehicle configuration, state of charge, battery temperature, speed, weather and elevation. Consider your usual routes and charging access rather than treating peak kW as a typical charging result.

Space and everyday use
Tesla lists 28 cu ft of cargo capacity for Model S Plaid and 24 cu ft for Model 3 on the US pages accessed October 8, 2026. Tesla lists seating for five adults in Model 3. Cargo volume alone does not show how comfortable a particular cabin will feel or whether a given item will fit: if passenger room or loading space is decisive, check the specific vehicle and test your real-world needs.
Warranty: compare coverage on the actual car
Tesla’s surfaced US product pages list a basic warranty of four years or 50,000 miles. Listed battery and drive-unit coverage differs by model and trim:

| Basic warranty | 4 years or 50,000 miles (Tesla US page, accessed October 8, 2026) | 4 years or 50,000 miles (Tesla US page, accessed October 8, 2026) |

For a used Model S, confirm the model year, exact trim, in-service date, mileage and remaining coverage directly with Tesla or the seller. Do not assume a new-car warranty description applies unchanged to a particular used listing.
Which is better, Model S or Model 3?
There is no universal winner because one option is a current new-car lineup and the other may be a remaining or used listing. A Model 3 is the more straightforward starting point if you want to buy new. A Model S is worth considering when a specific car’s condition, price, remaining warranty and features justify choosing it over a Model 3.

Is a Model S worth it over a Model 3?
The available product-page information does not establish a direct current out-the-door price comparison or a fair value for a used Model S. Prices, inventory, incentives and taxes vary, and no general cost-of-ownership winner is established. Compare actual local quotes and listings, then account for the Model S’s age, mileage, condition, insurance quote and remaining warranty. A lower listing price alone does not establish better value.

How to compare a specific Model S listing with a Model 3
- Get local figures: collect a current Model 3 quote for the trim you would buy and the full asking price and fees for the Model S listing.
- Verify the Model S: check its year, mileage, title, condition, service history and warranty status; confirm whether it is remaining new inventory or used.
- Match the specifications: compare each vehicle’s exact trim for EPA-estimated range, acceleration, cargo needs and warranty coverage.
- Price your ownership case: obtain insurance quotes for the actual vehicles and factor in the Model S’s age, mileage and condition. The available figures do not support a blanket maintenance or total-cost ranking.
- Check charging compatibility: confirm the connector and charging setup for the exact car and region, along with home electrical and installation requirements, before choosing equipment.
