Hansjörg von Gemmingen-Hornberg’s Tesla Model S has reportedly reached 3,000,000 kilometres (1,864,113 miles)—still short of two million miles—and is on its fourth battery pack. The newest milestone was reported on September 30, 2026. The car’s long life also involved extensive motor and drive-unit work, so its odometer is not a record of untouched original parts.
How many battery packs has the Model S used?
Four in total, according to Drive Tesla Canada’s 2026 report. The current, fourth pack was installed in 2023, when the car had accumulated about 1.76 million kilometres. In March 2026, the owner reportedly said that pack had covered one million kilometres with 85% capacity remaining and had needed no battery repairs over that distance. Those are owner-reported figures relayed by the outlet, not results from an independent battery inspection. Drive Tesla Canada
What is known about the earlier packs?
The available accounts give some distances and range snapshots, but not a complete pack-by-pack service record. At the two-million-kilometre milestone in April 2024, CarExpert reported that the owner had told Watt Energy in November 2023 that he was on his fourth battery. Two earlier packs had reportedly lasted 670,000 km and 505,000 km. CarExpert
Numerama’s account of that interview said an earlier pack that had lasted 670,000 km had fallen to about 260 km of range. At the time of the interview, the then-current pack had reportedly covered 650,000 km and retained around 400 km of range—described as an 8% decline from when it was installed. These are dated owner-reported range figures, not current measurements; the later report updates the mileage and claimed capacity for the fourth pack. Numerama

The reports do not establish the complete distance, condition, or new-versus-used status of every pack. The figures should therefore be read as snapshots, not a full battery ledger.
The car’s mileage came with substantial motor work
A high odometer does not mean the original drive hardware remained in service. Drive Tesla Canada says the car had gone through 14 motors by 1.8 million kilometres; many were remanufactured Tesla units that failed after coolant-seal leaks. At that mileage, an independent Zagreb shop, EV Clinic, reportedly rebuilt a drive unit. That unit then accumulated more than 1.2 million additional kilometres, with its shaft seal beginning to weep. The durable IP65-rated waterproof housing and reinforced cable ensure reliable charging in all weather conditions, keeping your vehicle safe year-round.
The count depends on the date and mileage being described: CarExpert’s April 2024 account said 13 motors at the two-million-kilometre milestone, while the 2026 report says 14 by 1.8 million kilometres. Those statements are not interchangeable counts for all time.
What the owner has said about charging and efficiency
CarExpert reported that von Gemmingen-Hornberg avoids charging to 100% and tries not to let the charge fall below 10%. He said he mostly charges at home using solar panels and uses Tesla Superchargers when travelling; the car reportedly had lifetime free Supercharging. He described its real-world range at the time as about 400 km. These details describe this car and its owner’s habits; they do not show that the charging routine caused its longevity or establish general battery-care rules. CarExpert

The newest report identifies the vehicle as a 2013 Model S P85+. Earlier coverage has called it a 2014 Model S or a P90. Because the reports differ, it is more accurate to attribute those descriptions than to present one year-and-trim combination as settled. Drive Tesla Canada CarExpert

What this record does—and does not—show
The latest reported milestone is extraordinary for an individual car, but the available accounts do not provide an independent inspection of its odometer, battery state of health, or complete service history. The owner’s reported pack capacity and mileage should not be treated as independently verified measurements, and one exceptionally high-mileage car cannot establish typical EV battery life.
In a 2024 Atlantic feature, UC Berkeley civil and environmental engineer Scott Moura said: “There are certain technologies that are coming down the pipeline that will get us toward that million-mile EV.” That was general context about future technology, not a prediction about this Model S or evidence that current EV batteries routinely last a million miles.
