Tesla has already ended Model S and Model X production. The company announced the wind-down on January 28, 2026, and Tesla’s second-quarter 2026 materials said the Fremont manufacturing lines for both vehicles had been decommissioned. Independent automotive reporting placed the final builds in May 2026.

The change is more than a routine model update. Tesla is converting the former Model S and Model X production space at Fremont for first-generation Optimus humanoid-robot manufacturing. Tesla has not announced a direct replacement for either its flagship sedan or its large SUV.

What happened to Model S and Model X production?

During Tesla’s Q4 2025 earnings call on January 28, 2026, CEO Elon Musk said the company would bring the Model S and Model X programs to an end and encouraged customers who wanted one to order while they were still available.

  • Perfect compatibility with Tesla Model 3, Model Y, Model S, Model X vehicles.
  • Built to strict quality control standards, stable performance, long service life, safe and reliable.
  • Direct replacement, easy installation, no modification required, ideal for repair and replacement.
  • Strictly tested before shipment to ensure high performance and durability.

Tesla’s Q2 2026 shareholder materials subsequently stated that the Model S and Model X manufacturing lines at Fremont had been decommissioned. The space is being used for Optimus production-line installation, confirming that the change was not simply a temporary pause in assembly.

Independent automotive reporting identified May 2026 as the month of the final Model S and Model X builds. Tesla’s Q2 production disclosure grouped 8,822 vehicles under the broad category “Other Models,” but did not identify Model S or Model X separately. That figure therefore should not be treated as evidence that new S/X production continued.

Why is Tesla ending the two programs?

The Fremont space is being redirected toward Tesla’s robotics strategy, particularly Optimus. Tesla’s Q4 2025 shareholder materials described a first Optimus production line planned for 2026 and a long-term potential capacity of up to one million robots per year. Those are planned capacity figures, not evidence that Tesla was already producing robots at that rate.

The decision also fits Tesla’s wider shift toward autonomy, artificial intelligence infrastructure, Cybercab and Tesla Semi. Tesla’s Q2 2026 materials said Cybercab production had begun and that Optimus manufacturing lines were still being installed in the former S/X area.

This reflects a significant opportunity-cost decision. Model S and Model X were relatively low-volume, expensive vehicles compared with Tesla’s Model 3 and Model Y, while the factory space could support programs the company considers more strategically important. Ending production does not mean the cars immediately become unsupported; it means Tesla is no longer allocating a production line to new examples.

Is Tesla planning a Model S or Model X replacement?

Not according to the announced product roadmap. Tesla has not announced a direct successor to the Model S sedan or Model X SUV in the sources reviewed.

Tesla’s published roadmap identifies the Model 3 and Model Y, Cybertruck, Cybercab, Semi and the next-generation Roadster. It does not identify a successor Model S sedan or a successor Model X large SUV.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction matters:

  • Model Y is not an official Model X replacement. It is a smaller crossover, even though it may meet the needs of some former Model X shoppers.
  • Cybertruck is not a Model X replacement. It is a pickup with a different body style, use case and buyer profile.
  • Cybercab is not a Model S replacement. It is part of Tesla’s autonomous-transport strategy rather than a conventional flagship sedan announced for retail buyers.
  • A rumored CyberSUV is not confirmed. Commentary about a future large Tesla SUV should be treated as speculation, not as a product announcement.

There is also no confirmed successor timetable to use when deciding whether to buy a remaining new vehicle or a used Model S or Model X. Any future large Tesla vehicle could have a different design, price, technology package or ownership model.

What the end of production means for current owners

For owners, the key point is that production ending and customer support ending are different events. Tesla continues to publish Model S and Model X warranty information, owner manuals, maintenance guidance, do-it-yourself procedures and selected upgrade programs.

Warranty coverage continues under the applicable vehicle documents

Tesla’s current support information lists a basic limited warranty of four years or 50,000 miles for Model S and Model X. It also lists an eight-year or 150,000-mile battery and drive-unit warranty for these models, subject to the vehicle’s applicable documents, conditions and exclusions.

These figures should not be interpreted as a promise that every vehicle receives identical coverage. Model year, market, mileage, ownership history and the original warranty documentation can matter. Owners should check the warranty information associated with their specific vehicle and contact Tesla before assuming a repair is covered.

Software and manuals remain available

Tesla continues to publish Model S and Model X owner manuals covering over-the-air software updates, charging, maintenance, tires, parts, accessories, emergency procedures and selected owner-service tasks. The Tesla-indexed Model X manual for North America identifies software version 2026.20, and a current Model S manual remains available.

That documentation is important for used-car buyers. A discontinued model can still receive software support, but buyers should verify the exact vehicle’s current software, hardware configuration and feature eligibility rather than assuming that every Model S or Model X has the same capabilities.

Some older cars may qualify for upgrades or special programs

Owners of Model S and Model X vehicles built in March 2018 or earlier may be eligible for Tesla’s infotainment upgrade, depending on the vehicle’s hardware and Tesla’s eligibility determination. Tesla also maintains an eMMC warranty-adjustment program for certain pre-March-2018 Model S and Model X vehicles.

These are not universal upgrades for every older car. Confirm eligibility with Tesla using the vehicle identification number and the vehicle’s current hardware information before budgeting for the work.

Maintenance will continue, but parts availability needs perspective

Ending production does not make every part unavailable overnight. Model S and Model X vehicles remain on the road, and Tesla continues to document service procedures, parts and accessories. Over time, however, owners of discontinued vehicles should expect inventory and compatibility to vary more by model year and configuration.

Tesla’s maintenance guidance, for example, recommends cabin-air-filter replacement at two-year intervals for 2012–2020 Model S and Model X vehicles, with separate guidance for air-conditioning desiccant-bag replacement. Those recommendations are not universal rules for every S/X vehicle: the correct procedure and interval can differ by year and configuration.

For routine items, owners can compare Tesla Model S cabin air filters and Tesla Model X wiper blades, but fitment must be checked carefully. A listing that says “Tesla” is not automatically Tesla-approved, and the right part can vary between a Model S and Model X, between model years, and sometimes between hardware revisions.

Tesla’s owner documentation directs customers toward Tesla stores, Tesla’s online channels and parts.tesla.com for official parts and accessories. It also warns that non-approved parts or modifications can affect safety, performance and warranty coverage. Owners should use the official channel when a component is safety-critical, difficult to verify or covered by a current repair program.

Which repairs should owners avoid doing themselves?

Tesla publishes do-it-yourself guides for Model S and Model X, including separate guidance for older 2012–2020 Model S and 2015–2020 Model X vehicles. Basic procedures such as replacing wiper blades or restarting the touchscreen may be appropriate for a capable owner who follows the instructions for the exact vehicle.

High-voltage electrical work, airbag and restraint-system repairs, structural repairs and other safety-critical work should be handled by Tesla or a properly qualified professional. A discontinued vehicle is not a good reason to take greater risks with an unfamiliar repair.

Collision repairs require particular care. Tesla directs owners involved in collisions toward Tesla or Tesla-approved body shops and warns that non-original or salvaged body parts may not meet its standards for fit, corrosion resistance or quality. An inexpensive replacement panel or trim item should not be represented as Tesla-approved merely because it is advertised as compatible.

What should buyers do now?

If you want a new Model S or Model X

New production is over, so any remaining new vehicle would have to be existing inventory rather than a fresh factory order. Availability, pricing and market eligibility can vary by country and by Tesla inventory status. Verify the vehicle’s build date, warranty start date, included equipment and software features before treating it as equivalent to a newly produced car.

If you are considering a used Model S or Model X

Discontinued status is not automatically a reason to avoid one. It does make due diligence more important:

  1. Identify the exact model year and configuration. Model S and Model X hardware, batteries, infotainment systems and features changed over time.
  2. Check the vehicle’s warranty position. Confirm remaining basic, battery and drive-unit coverage rather than relying on a seller’s general description.
  3. Review service and repair history. Look for evidence of major battery, drive-unit, suspension, door, screen and charging-system work where applicable.
  4. Confirm software and hardware features. Do not assume a used car has the same infotainment, driver-assistance or charging capabilities as a newer one.
  5. Check parts and service access in your area. Tesla support and qualified repair options can differ by location.
  6. Budget for model-specific maintenance. Verify filter, tire, wiper and other replacement items by VIN or exact fitment data.

If you are replacing a Model S or Model X

There is no direct Tesla successor to compare today. A Model Y may be a practical alternative for some Model X owners, while a Model 3 may suit buyers moving away from the Model S, but neither should be described as an official replacement. Cybertruck, Cybercab, Semi and the next-generation Roadster serve different purposes and should be evaluated as separate products.

Bottom line

Tesla’s Model S and Model X production did not merely end in a planned spring wind-down: the Fremont lines were decommissioned, with final builds reported in May 2026. Tesla is reallocating that factory space to Optimus manufacturing as it prioritizes robotics, autonomy and newer vehicle programs.

No direct Model S sedan or Model X SUV replacement has been announced. Existing owners, however, should not assume that support has stopped. Warranty terms, software documentation, service guidance, parts channels and selected upgrade programs remain in place, although long-term maintenance will require increasingly careful attention to model year, hardware and parts fitment.
