Tesla Model 3 vs. Model Y: Range, Space, and Charging Compared

Model Y offers far more flexible cargo space and a taller cabin, while Model 3 is the lower sedan and can show a higher published range in a specific Rear-Wheel Drive configuration. Compare exact trims, because Tesla’s range and charging figures vary.

The Model Y is the better fit if you need a tall cabin, flexible cargo area, or maximum space for road-trip luggage. The Model 3 is the lower sedan choice, with a smaller exterior height and a more traditional trunk layout. Neither model has one universal range or charging specification: Tesla publishes different figures by drivetrain and trim, so compare the exact versions you would buy.

The figures below are Tesla EPA estimates and manufacturer charging claims, not guarantees of the miles you will achieve on a particular trip. Tesla says speed, weather, elevation, battery temperature, state of charge, wheel choice, Supercharger type and vehicle configuration can all change real-world range and charging performance.

At a glance: which Tesla should you choose?

Priority Better starting point Why
Maximum cargo flexibility Model Y Five-seat versions list 29.0–29.5 cubic feet behind the second row and about 74.8–75.5 cubic feet with the seats folded, depending on version.
Lower, sedan-like driving position Model 3 Its listed height is about 56.7 inches for Rear-Wheel Drive and Long Range versions, versus about 63.8 inches for the surfaced Model Y version.
Longest published range in the surfaced specifications Model 3, exact trim dependent A listed Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive configuration shows up to 363 EPA-estimated miles; Model 3 Performance is listed at 309 miles. These are not the same configuration.
A crossover body with a high roof Model Y The taller body makes it easier to load bulky items and gives the cabin a more upright layout.
Fastest published peak Supercharging figure Model 3, on several surfaced configurations Tesla lists up to 250 kW for several Model 3 configurations and 225 kW for Standard; the surfaced Model Y Standard Rear-Wheel Drive listing says up to 225 kW.

Use this as a starting decision, not a substitute for checking a vehicle’s configuration page. Tesla’s lineup and specifications can change, and a range figure from one trim cannot be used as the range for every Model 3 or Model Y.

Model 3 vs. Model Y range

Range is the most frequently misunderstood part of this comparison because the model names cover multiple drivetrains and equipment levels. Tesla’s surfaced Model 3 specifications show a spread from 309 to 363 EPA-estimated miles across the configurations listed there. The surfaced Model Y page shows 321 EPA-estimated miles for Standard Rear-Wheel Drive and presents additional configurations whose figures must be checked individually.

Vehicle and configuration named in the specifications EPA-estimated range What the number means
Model 3 Performance 309 miles Tesla estimate for the Performance configuration; not a range figure for other Model 3 trims.
Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive (listed configuration) Up to 363 miles Tesla’s highest surfaced Model 3 estimate in the supplied specifications; exact equipment and wheels still matter.
Model Y Standard Rear-Wheel Drive 321 miles Tesla estimate for the named Standard Rear-Wheel Drive version.
Other Model Y configurations Not stated in the available specification summary Check the exact configuration before comparing it with a Model 3 figure.

Why the published numbers do not predict every trip

EPA range is a standardized estimate intended to make vehicles comparable. It is not a promise that the battery will deliver that distance at highway speed, in freezing weather, with a full load or while climbing. Tesla’s own Model 3 specifications state: “Actual driving range and charging performance may vary depending on several factors including Supercharger type, vehicle configuration, state of charge, battery temperature, speed, weather and elevation change, among others.”

A cold battery can accept power more slowly until it warms. High speed increases aerodynamic energy use, and winter heating consumes energy that would otherwise move the car. Headwinds, rain, snow, mountain roads, roof or wheel changes, heavy luggage and repeated short trips can all reduce the practical distance between charging stops. Conversely, moderate temperatures, steady speeds and favorable terrain can produce better results.

How to compare range without mixing trims

  1. Write down the exact drivetrain and trim. “Model 3” and “Model Y” alone are not sufficient labels. Include Rear-Wheel Drive, Performance or the precise name shown in the current Tesla order flow.
  2. Record the wheel and tire choice. Wheel size and tire specification can affect efficiency and therefore the displayed estimate.
  3. Compare the same testing basis. Use EPA-estimated figures for both vehicles, rather than combining an EPA number with a best-case dashboard prediction.
  4. Plan from a conservative charge level. A road trip normally reserves energy for weather, traffic, detours and a charger that is busy or unavailable.

Which Tesla has more cargo space?

The Model Y is the clear choice for cargo volume and loading flexibility. Tesla’s owner-manual measurements for surfaced five-seat versions list 29.0–29.5 cubic feet behind the second row and approximately 74.8–75.5 cubic feet of maximum total volume with the seats folded, depending on version. The Model 3 owner manual lists 24.1 cubic feet of maximum total cargo volume with five passengers.

Measurement Model 3 Model Y, five-seat versions
Cargo behind the second row Not stated as a separate figure in the cited Model 3 measurement 29.0–29.5 cu ft, depending on version
Maximum total cargo volume 24.1 cu ft with five passengers Approximately 74.8–75.5 cu ft, depending on version
Seating layout covered by the measurement Five passengers Five seats; seven-seat versions have different capacity

These figures are not perfectly interchangeable measurements. Tesla’s manuals use different tables and definitions, and the Model 3’s cited 24.1-cubic-foot figure is presented as total volume with five passengers, while the Model Y table separates space behind the second row from maximum volume. Read the seating condition and measurement definition beside every number.

What the extra Model Y space changes in practice

The Model Y’s liftback-style rear opening and taller body are useful for objects that are awkward to place in a sedan trunk: tall boxes, strollers, stacked groceries, camping bins and soft luggage. Folding the second row creates a much larger continuous load area. The Model 3 can still carry everyday luggage and has useful front and rear storage, but its lower rear opening limits the height and shape of items you can load.

Choose the Model Y if you regularly carry bulky equipment, transport a dog in a secured cargo area, or need to load without lifting items over a high trunk lip. Choose the Model 3 if your cargo is mostly suitcases, groceries and briefcases and you prefer the lower sedan profile.

Seven-seat Model Y caution

A seven-seat Model Y has a different cargo arrangement and should not be assigned the five-seat figures above. If the third row matters, verify the capacity for that seating layout in the owner manual or current vehicle specification. Do not quote the five-seat maximum as though it applied when all seven seats are in use.

Exterior dimensions and cabin feel

Dimension Model 3 Model Y
Length Approximately 185.8 inches for the surfaced Rear-Wheel Drive and Long Range versions Approximately 188.6–188.7 inches for the surfaced version
Height Approximately 56.7 inches for the surfaced Rear-Wheel Drive and Long Range versions Approximately 63.8 inches for the surfaced version
Seating configuration referenced by the cargo data Five passengers Five-seat figures; seven-seat version differs

The Model Y is only a few inches longer in the cited measurements but is much taller. That height difference drives the upright seating position, larger liftgate opening and more useful vertical cargo space. The Model 3’s lower roof and sedan proportions can feel more car-like and may make it easier for some drivers to step into a lower seat, but the exact experience depends on seat adjustment and personal height.

Dimensions can vary with options and version. Treat the figures as the measurements for the configurations identified in Tesla’s manuals, not as immutable dimensions for every production vehicle carrying the same model name.

Charging: Model 3 vs. Model Y

Both cars use Tesla’s Supercharger network, but the surfaced specifications show different peak claims by configuration. Peak kilowatts describe the highest possible power under favorable conditions; they do not describe the average power over a complete session or guarantee a particular number of miles added.

Vehicle and configuration Published maximum Supercharging power Published 15-minute claim
Model 3, several surfaced configurations Up to 250 kW Tesla lists a miles-added estimate for a 15-minute session; the exact value is not stated in the available specification summary.
Model 3 Standard Up to 225 kW A 15-minute miles-added estimate is listed by Tesla; the exact value is not stated in the available specification summary.
Model Y Standard Rear-Wheel Drive Up to 225 kW Up to 160 miles added in 15 minutes, according to the surfaced Tesla listing.

Why a 250-kW or 225-kW label is not a session promise

Charging power is not constant. The car generally accepts the highest rate only in part of a session, then reduces power as the battery fills or as temperature and charger conditions require. Tesla identifies Supercharger type, battery temperature, state of charge, vehicle configuration, speed, weather and elevation change as factors that affect charging performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A battery arriving cold or nearly full may charge much more slowly than a warm battery at a low state of charge. A busy site, a cabinet shared with another stall, or a site with a lower-rated charger can also change the result. The useful road-trip question is not “Can this car reach the peak?” but “How many minutes will this route require at the specific chargers available along it?”

How to use the 15-minute figures

Tesla’s miles-added numbers are estimates under the company’s stated conditions. They are helpful for understanding the intended charging capability, but they should not be converted directly into a guaranteed percentage of battery or a universal miles-per-minute rate. The Model Y Standard Rear-Wheel Drive claim of up to 160 miles in 15 minutes is a ceiling-style manufacturer statement, not a promise for every stop.

Home charging and electricity cost

Home charging can make either vehicle convenient for daily use because the car can be connected while parked overnight. Tesla’s Model Y page says: “When you plug in at home overnight, you can charge using lower-cost electricity and then start your day with plenty of range.” That is a general statement about the possibility of using a lower-priced electricity period, not a guaranteed saving.

What determines your actual home-charging cost

  • Your utility’s energy rate, including time-of-use periods, demand charges and taxes.
  • The amount of energy the car needs after each drive.
  • Charging losses between the wall and the battery.
  • Whether your electrical panel needs an upgrade or a new circuit.
  • Installation labor, permits and the distance from the panel to the parking space.
  • Any off-peak program or home-energy plan available in your location.

The available specifications do not establish a universal charger-installation price, electricity rate or direct ownership-cost advantage for one model over the other. Obtain a local electrical quote and use your utility’s tariff before treating home charging as a financial calculation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Home charging decision

If you can charge where you park, the difference between these models is usually less about access and more about how much energy you need before the next drive. A Model Y used for long highway trips may consume more energy than a lower sedan in the same conditions because body shape, weight, wheels and speed affect efficiency. Compare the exact vehicle’s estimated consumption and your driving pattern rather than assuming the larger battery or longer EPA figure will always cost less to operate.

Road-trip suitability

When the Model 3 makes more sense

  • You value the longest surfaced EPA estimate and are considering the listed Rear-Wheel Drive configuration at up to 363 miles.
  • Your luggage is mostly soft bags or standard suitcases that fit a sedan trunk.
  • You prefer a lower vehicle and do not need the Model Y’s vertical loading space.
  • You are evaluating a surfaced configuration with Tesla’s up-to-250-kW peak Supercharging claim.

When the Model Y makes more sense

  • You routinely carry bicycles, strollers, tall boxes, pets or camping equipment.
  • You want substantially more usable cargo volume with the rear seats folded.
  • You prefer a taller seating position and a liftgate opening.
  • You are considering the Standard Rear-Wheel Drive version with a 321-mile EPA estimate and up to 225 kW of stated Supercharging power.

Planning a trip in either model

  1. Enter the exact trim, drivetrain and wheel choice into the vehicle’s navigation system or trip planner.
  2. Check the expected arrival state of charge at each stop, not just the total miles between chargers.
  3. Allow a reserve for cold weather, high speed, elevation, traffic and a detour.
  4. Precondition the battery when the car recommends it for a scheduled fast-charge stop.
  5. Use a shorter stop when practical instead of assuming every session should continue to 100 percent.
  6. Recalculate if weather, load or traffic changes materially.

Common comparison mistakes

Using one range number for every Model 3

The 309-mile Performance estimate and the up-to-363-mile listed Rear-Wheel Drive estimate describe different configurations. Presenting either as “the Model 3 range” hides the trim decision that determines the result.

Comparing a Model 3 number with an unnamed Model Y

The surfaced Model Y page specifically lists 321 miles for Standard Rear-Wheel Drive and also presents other configurations. Name both versions before drawing a range conclusion.

Calling peak charging speed an average

Up to 250 kW or up to 225 kW is a maximum claim under suitable conditions. Battery temperature, state of charge and the charger itself can lower the rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mixing cargo definitions

Model Y’s 29.0–29.5 cubic feet behind the second row is not the same measurement as Model 3’s cited 24.1 cubic feet of maximum total volume with five passengers. Include the seating condition and definition whenever you quote a cargo number.

Assuming seven-seat capacity equals five-seat capacity

The seven-seat Model Y has different cargo capacity. Use the table for the seating layout you are actually considering.

A buyer’s exact-trim checklist

  1. Identify the model year and market. The figures discussed here are from Tesla pages and owner manuals surfaced for the U.S. comparison; availability and specifications can change.
  2. Record drivetrain and trim. Include Rear-Wheel Drive, Long Range, Performance or Standard exactly as shown by Tesla.
  3. Check EPA range for that configuration. Do not infer it from a different version with the same body.
  4. Check wheels and options. Options can alter efficiency, dimensions or available seating.
  5. Confirm seating layout. Five-seat and seven-seat Model Y cargo measurements are not interchangeable.
  6. Read the charging footnote. Confirm whether the listing says up to 250 kW, up to 225 kW or another value, and read the conditions attached to any miles-added claim.
  7. Plan home charging locally. Verify electrical capacity, installation requirements and your utility’s rates before calculating savings.

Bottom line

Choose the Model Y when cargo flexibility, a taller cabin and liftback practicality are more important than having the lowest body. Choose the Model 3 when you want a sedan and are comparing a specific configuration whose EPA estimate and charging rating suit your driving. The decisive step is to compare matching trims: Tesla’s published 309–363-mile Model 3 spread, the Model Y Standard Rear-Wheel Drive’s 321-mile estimate, and the 225–250-kW charging claims are configuration-specific estimates, not universal promises for every car wearing the same model badge.
