That is a standardized estimate for that configuration—not a promise of how far every driver will travel on a charge. Speed, weather, route, climate use, tires, accessories, and energy consumed while parked can all change the result.
What is the range of a Tesla Model 3?
Tesla’s current U.S. specifications page lists 321 miles EPA-estimated for Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive. The figure applies to that trim and market; it should not be applied to every Model 3 configuration. Tesla’s live specifications can change, so check the page for the vehicle’s exact trim when comparing cars: Tesla Model 3 specifications.
An EPA estimate is useful for comparing vehicles under a standardized rating, but it is not a guaranteed trip distance. Tesla explains that the range display estimates remaining battery energy using EPA-rated consumption and may not reflect an owner’s driving patterns or external conditions. The vehicle’s Energy app can show recent energy consumption, which is more specific to observed use but still cannot predict the next trip with certainty. See the Model 3 owner’s manual range guidance.
How far can a Model 3 go on a full charge?
There is no single real-world distance that applies to every Model 3 or driver. The 321-mile figure is the current U.S. EPA estimate for Rear-Wheel Drive, while actual distance depends on the car’s configuration and how it is used. A trip at elevated highway speed in cold, windy weather with cabin heat can consume energy differently from a milder, slower trip on level roads.

The available evidence here does not establish a fair independent road-test figure or a universal percentage to subtract from the EPA estimate. A meaningful test comparison would need to identify at least the model year and trim, wheels and tires, temperature, speed, route, and measurement method. Treat any real-world figure that omits those details cautiously.
What affects Tesla Model 3 range?
Tesla identifies several factors that can change energy consumption. Their effects depend on the conditions; no single adjustment guarantees a fixed number of additional miles.

Speed, weather, and wind
- Higher speed: Driving faster can increase energy consumption.
- Cold or hot weather: Temperature affects vehicle energy use, and cold conditions require energy for driving as well as heating the cabin and battery.
- Wind: Headwinds and other wind conditions can increase consumption.
Tesla’s cold-weather guidance recommends scheduled preconditioning. When equipped, seat and steering-wheel heaters can be a more efficient way to stay warm than heating the entire cabin. These are ways to manage consumption, not promises of a particular range increase. See Tesla’s cold-weather guidance.
Climate controls and trip pattern
Heating or cooling the cabin uses energy. Short trips and stop-and-go driving can also show higher average consumption because the cabin and battery need energy to reach operating temperature. An energy-intensive start may therefore matter more on a short journey than over a longer drive.

Elevation, cargo, and windows
Uphill travel uses energy; downhill driving can recover some energy through regenerative braking. Heavy cargo adds to consumption, and driving with windows open can affect efficiency.
Tires, wheels, and accessories
Tire and wheel condition, wheel configuration, and third-party accessories can affect consumption. Tesla specifically lists items such as roof or trunk racks and third-party wheels as factors to consider. Its manual says correct tire pressure helps improve range and notes that a wheel-configuration change can affect the vehicle’s displayed range estimate. A changed estimate on the display is not, by itself, proof of a measured change in distance driven.

Energy use while parked
Preconditioning or running climate control while the car is unplugged consumes battery energy, reducing what is available for driving. Tesla recommends keeping the vehicle plugged in when it is not in use to limit excessive idle consumption.

- Check the pressure when the tires are cold, using an accurate gauge.
- Compare the reading with the correct pressure specified for your vehicle, rather than relying on a generic target.
- Adjust as needed and recheck. Tesla says proper inflation helps protect the tires and improve range; consult the owner’s manual for vehicle-specific guidance.
A gauge is useful for carrying out the check, but no particular gauge is required or endorsed here.

How to compare Model 3 range figures
When comparing two Model 3s or planning a trip, separate the rated figure from the conditions that shape actual use. Check the trim and drivetrain first, then consider wheel and tire setup, weather, highway speed, elevation, and access to charging along the route. A single range number without those qualifications cannot tell you how far a specific car will go on a particular trip.
