Tesla Model 3 Performance: What the 2.9-Second 0–60 mph Claim Means and What Changed

Tesla's current U.S. Model 3 page lists 2.9 seconds from 0–60 mph for the Performance trim. Here is what that Tesla-published figure measures, what changed at the April 2024 launch, and what to check before buying.

Tesla’s current U.S. Model 3 product page lists the Model 3 Performance at 2.9 seconds from 0–60 mph. That is a manufacturer specification, not an independent timed result, and it is the figure most readers will want to check first. Tesla announced the new Model 3 Performance on April 23, 2024, so the trim is no longer new in 2026; what follows separates the launch date from the figures Tesla publishes today, which can change.

What the 2.9-second figure is

Tesla’s U.S. Model 3 page lists 2.9 seconds from 0–60 mph for the Performance trim, and its footnote states that rollout is subtracted from the measurement. Rollout is the short distance a car travels before the timing actually begins, so subtracting it makes the number reflect the acceleration itself rather than the start of the run. Tesla does not say in the material reviewed here what surface, conditions or number of runs underlie the figure, so treat it as Tesla’s stated result rather than a reproducible benchmark.

No independent road test of this figure was reviewed for this article. If you see the 2.9-second number repeated by another site, check whether it is quoting Tesla or a separate measurement.

Launch date versus current specifications

Two sources answer two different questions, and they should not be mixed:

2PCS Cabin Air Filter with Activated Carbon for Tesla Model 3 (2017-2026), Model Y (2020-2026), OE# 1107681-00-A, CF12774, XC11952C, CF774
  • [Vehicle Fitment] Replacement for Tesla: Model 3 (2017-2026), Model Y (2020-2026).
  • [OE Numbers] Replacement for Tesla: 1107681-00-A.
  • [Reference Number]: Replacement for CF12774 , XC11952C.
  • The different model year spans involved: 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025.
  • The launch: Tesla’s announcement, attributed to “The Tesla Team,” is dated April 23, 2024. It describes the trim as a high-performance daily driver built on the latest Model 3 platform at that time.
  • The current figures: Tesla’s U.S. Model 3 product page, checked in 2026, lists the acceleration, range and charging values discussed below. Product pages are updated, so these values reflect that snapshot only.

The launch announcement contains a line that explains the timing. Tesla wrote: “Six years after the first Model 3 Performance deliveries, we are launching the new Model 3 Performance: a highly differentiated performance trim that leverages Tesla’s latest manufacturing and engineering capabilities to create what we consider to be a perfect, high-performance daily driver.” That sentence is Tesla’s own framing, and it is the reason the word “finally” reads as launch-era language rather than a current description.

Current U.S. specifications

The following values are from Tesla’s U.S. Model 3 product page as checked in 2026. Other trims are listed on the same page with different figures, so compare trims only from a single page, region and access date.

  • Aerodynamic-Inspired Design: Designed with smooth contours to complement your vehicle's natural airflow, this rear spoiler wing gives your Model 3 a refined, performance-inspired appearance.

Item Tesla’s listed value (U.S. Performance trim) What it measures
0–60 mph 2.9 seconds, rollout subtracted Tesla’s timed acceleration claim
Range 309 miles, EPA-estimated EPA estimate for the listed configuration
Drivetrain Dual-motor all-wheel drive Motor layout
Wheels 20-inch Warp wheels Factory wheel setup
Maximum Supercharging rate 250 kW Peak charging rate at a compatible station

These three headline numbers measure different things: a timed run under Tesla’s method, an EPA range estimate, and a peak charging rate. They do not offset one another, so a faster 0–60 time does not imply less range, and a high charging peak does not guarantee a short real-world session.

What Tesla says changed from the previous Performance trim

Tesla’s launch post lists several changes. These are manufacturer descriptions, and the comparisons below are Tesla’s own claims against the previous-generation Model 3 Performance.

Chassis hardware and adaptive damping

Tesla describes bespoke chassis hardware paired with adaptive damping. The launch material does not publish suspension tuning values, so the benefit is described only in Tesla’s terms.

Track-ready brake pads

The trim uses brake pads that Tesla describes as track-ready. Whether that matters for you depends on how you use the car; the announcement does not provide brake-fade or stopping-distance measurements.

  • Up to 5% reduced drag
  • 36% reduction in lift
  • 55% improvement in front-to-rear lift balance

These figures come from Tesla’s April 23, 2024 announcement. They are Tesla’s comparison claims and have not been independently verified.

Track Mode: what the manual limits it to

Tesla’s owner’s manual (2024 and later) says Track Mode is available only on Performance Model 3 vehicles and is designed to support performance and handling on closed circuits. It is not a public-road feature, and the manual does not state a lap-time improvement, so do not assume one from the name alone.

Ownership checks before you buy or fit parts

Tires are the most obvious replacement item for this trim. Tesla names Pirelli P ZERO 4 tires in its launch post, but the announcement does not establish a universal fitment, so confirm the exact size, load rating and speed rating for your specific car, wheel setup and market before buying.

Charging equipment also varies. Tesla’s manual states that charging hardware can differ by region and model year, so confirm what your car and your installation support before buying a home charger or adapter.

How to verify the numbers yourself

  • Open Tesla’s U.S. Model 3 product page and note the trim, region and date you checked.
  • Read the footnote beside the 0–60 mph figure and confirm that rollout is subtracted.
  • Compare trims only against the same page, region and access date.
  • Treat any independent acceleration result as a separate measurement with its own method, surface and conditions.
  • Check your own car’s tire size and charging hardware against the owner’s manual for your model year and market.

The 2.9-second figure is a current Tesla specification for the U.S. Performance trim. The April 2024 launch explains where the trim came from; the product page and manual describe what it is today.
