For a Model 3 confirmed to have an LFP battery, Tesla recommends setting the charge limit to 100% even for daily use, and charging to 100% at least once a week. That guidance is more useful than a blanket 80% rule. Available studies support the idea that high state of charge can affect battery aging, but they do not establish how much daily charging to 100% changes degradation in Tesla’s LFP packs. So it is not possible to prove that any penalty is negligible—or assign it a reliable percentage.
Should you charge a Model 3 LFP battery to 100% every day?
Yes, if your car is equipped with an LFP battery, Tesla’s chemistry-specific guidance is to keep the charge limit at 100%, including for daily use, and fully charge to 100% at least once per week. The instruction appears in Tesla Model 3 manual material hosted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
This differs from Tesla’s general battery-care guidance for vehicles with a recommended daily limit of 80%. The current Model 3 manual says to avoid leaving the battery near 0% or 100% for long periods whenever possible. Read that as a caution against prolonged storage at an extreme charge level, not as a reason to ignore the separate LFP charging recommendation.
Charging to 100% is not the same as parking at 100% for a long time
There is a practical difference between reaching 100% shortly before a drive and leaving the vehicle fully charged and unused for an extended period. Follow the charge limit and schedule available for your exact car, and avoid unnecessary long stays near 100% when possible. Tesla’s published guidance does not provide a numerical threshold for what counts as a long period.

Does charging an LFP Tesla to 100% hurt the battery?
High state of charge can contribute to calendar aging, but the available evidence does not quantify an extra degradation penalty from daily 100% charging in Tesla Model 3 LFP packs. Tesla’s recommendation to charge LFP vehicles fully is not proof that the practice has no aging effect; nor do the cited studies show that the effect is large enough to matter in ordinary ownership.
A 2024 study of cells taken from a 2018 Model 3 Long Range found state-of-charge-dependent aging, including faster calendar aging at high charge levels. Those cells used NCA chemistry, not LFP, so the result cannot be used as a direct estimate for an LFP Model 3. The Journal of Energy Storage study also discusses cycling within very high or very low state-of-charge windows.

Laboratory work on LFP cells likewise shows that charge level and temperature affect aging, but it does not measure the difference between daily 100% charging and a lower routine limit in Tesla vehicles. One 2020 experiment reported nearly 5% calendar capacity loss for Sony LFP cells and nearly 8% for BYD LFP cells after 30 months. Those are cell-specific test results, not Tesla pack degradation figures, and they do not isolate the extra loss attributable to charging to 100%. The study is available on arXiv.
A 2025 LFP cell study also considers storage state of charge, temperature, pressure, and cycling protocol, but does not establish a Tesla-specific real-world penalty for daily full charges. Its findings concern LFP cell aging factors, not a Model 3 pack comparison.

Is it better to charge to 80% or 100%?
For an LFP Model 3, use the vehicle-specific LFP instruction rather than applying Tesla’s 80% daily-limit guidance for other vehicles. For a Model 3 that is not LFP, follow the daily charge limit and guidance shown for that car. The exact vehicle’s manual and software matter because recommendations can vary by model year, market, and software.
For LFP owners, daily range needs and the time the car will sit parked can inform when to schedule charging, but the sources available do not provide a measured numerical trade-off between a 100% limit and a lower routine limit. Tesla recommends Level 1 or Level 2 charging when possible, such as a suitable wall outlet or Tesla Wall Charger; confirm connector, electrical supply, region, and vehicle-year compatibility before choosing equipment.

How can you tell if your Model 3 has an LFP battery?
Check the car rather than inferring battery chemistry from trim, model year, or location. Tesla’s manual material says the vehicle’s Additional Vehicle Information screen identifies an LFP pack with the wording “High Voltage Battery type: Lithium Iron Phosphate.” Follow the information displayed in your car and its current manual.
How can you check your Model 3 battery health?
Some Model 3 vehicles include a Battery Health screen that uses battery-management data and expected retention for the vehicle’s battery type, age, and use. Tesla also describes an optional Battery Health Test that compares measured energy retention with the battery when new. The test may require the vehicle to remain connected to an AC charger for up to 24 hours; availability varies by vehicle. Tesla recommends using it if you are concerned about energy retention. Battery retention also depends on factors such as age, pack size, chemistry, driving, and charging. A health screen or test can inform an individual concern, but it does not establish what charging limit another owner should use.
