The Model 3 refresh known as Highland changed the sedan’s cabin, controls and available Performance hardware. Here are eight facts, with market and range caveats.

The Tesla Model 3 refresh commonly called “Highland” brought meaningful changes to the sedan’s design, cabin, controls and available hardware. It debuted in China and Europe in 2023, then reached North America in January 2024. Tesla called it the “upgraded Model 3” in North America; “Highland” is the development name widely used in reporting. Equipment and specifications differ by market, trim and production date, so check the exact car rather than relying on the name alone.

1. Highland was a substantial refresh, not a new generation

The Model 3 had been on sale for years before this redesign. The refreshed version appeared in China and Europe in 2023, followed by its North American rollout on January 10, 2024, according to TechCrunch’s launch report. The outlet described it as the sedan’s first real overhaul. Tesla used “upgraded Model 3” for the North American launch; Highland is the familiar shorthand, not the official North American model name.

2. The cabin, lighting and controls changed

At the US rollout, TechCrunch reported ambient lighting, upgraded materials, improved sound dampening and a screen for rear passengers. The steering-column stalks were removed, changing how drivers operate functions such as turn signals and shifting. These are launch-era descriptions; they do not establish that every car sold later or in every country has identical equipment. Inspect the vehicle’s controls and interior configuration directly.

3. There is a front screen and a separate rear screen

Tesla’s current Model 3 product page lists a 15.4-inch center touchscreen and an 8-inch rear touchscreen. The smaller display is for rear passengers. Tesla’s online specifications can change and may vary by market or trim, so verify the local listing and the specific vehicle. If adding a screen protector, confirm its fit against the exact model year and display dimensions rather than assuming one accessory fits every Model 3.

4. Range figures depend on trim, market and test cycle

For the January 2024 US launch, TechCrunch reported estimated ranges of 272 miles for the rear-wheel-drive Model 3 and 341 miles for Long Range; the preceding Long Range was reported at 333 miles. These are historical US launch figures, not current buying guidance or a promise of real-world distance. US EPA estimates should not be compared directly with European WLTP figures, which use a different test cycle.

Tesla cautions that actual range and charging performance vary with configuration, Supercharger type, state of charge, battery temperature, speed, weather and elevation. Use the estimate for the exact regional trim as a comparison point, not a guaranteed outcome.

5. Tesla says the refresh is quieter and more comfortable

Tesla presents the updated Model 3 as having improvements to noise, vibration and harshness, including end-to-end noise treatment and 360-degree acoustic glass. The company reiterated those points in its April 23, 2024 Performance announcement. These are Tesla’s descriptions, not results from an independent controlled cabin-noise test.

6. Performance has hardware the other trims do not

The Model 3 Performance is a distinct package, not a list of features shared by every refreshed car. Tesla says its new Performance has adaptive damping—described as a first for Model 3 and unique to that trim—along with bespoke chassis hardware, a Performance 4DU drive unit and track-focused modes. Tesla says the damping system responds to driver and road inputs to balance ride and handling; that is the manufacturer’s characterization, not an independent assessment.

7. Performance also gets different seats and bodywork

Tesla describes the Performance seats as sport seats with bolstering, heating and ventilation. Its exterior changes include a front splitter, rear diffuser and spoiler. Compared with the previous Performance, Tesla claims up to 5% lower drag, 36% lower lift and a 55% improvement in front-to-rear lift balance. These aerodynamic figures are manufacturer claims, not independently verified findings.

8. Compare the cars by configuration, not just model year

A useful earlier-versus-refreshed comparison looks at the exterior, cabin noise and ride, displays and steering-column controls, and the equipment attached to each trim. Range belongs in the comparison too, but only when the market, trim and test cycle match. A “2024 Model 3” label by itself does not establish which refresh details or options a particular car has; check its regional specification and equipment list.
