Some Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles can now provide vehicle-to-home (V2H) backup when paired with a specified Powerwall system and compatible charging equipment. Tesla’s configuration note limits the stated eligibility to vehicles ordered in the United States or Puerto Rico after October 1, 2026. This is not a universal Model 3 or Model Y feature, and Tesla’s cited configuration does not list these models for vehicle-to-grid (V2G), a capability it does list for Cybertruck in a different setup.
What changed for Model 3 and Model Y?
Tesla’s configuration note now lists Model 3 and Model Y alongside Cybertruck as supporting V2H in a Powerwall 3 system. V2H means the vehicle can supply energy to a home through the specified home-energy setup; it does not mean the car can simply be plugged into a house with an ordinary adapter.
Tesla marks that Powerwall 3 configuration “Available now.” The note separately says a Powerwall 2 or Powerwall+ system with a Universal Wall Connector or Gen 3 Wall Connector “Can be installed now, Powershare feature coming soon.” Installation readiness and Powershare feature availability are therefore not the same thing. Tesla’s Powershare configuration note is the source for the equipment and feature distinctions.
What equipment does the documented Model 3/Y setup require?
The listed Powerwall 3 arrangement combines a Powerwall 3 system, a Tesla Universal Wall Connector or Gen 3 Wall Connector, and a Powershare-compatible vehicle inverter. Tesla lists inverter part number 2100145-xx-y for Model 3 and Model Y; Cybertruck has a different listed part number, 1999990-xx-y. The configuration is a system, not a software-only update, and a compatible wall connector by itself does not provide home backup.

- WORKS WITH EVERY TESLA + OTHER EVs: Built-in Tesla-style plug (NACS standard) connects directly to Tesla Model S, 3, X and Y - and any EV with a NACS port - no adapter needed. The plug even has a button to pop open your Tesla’s charge port. Non-Tesla J1772 vehicles can charge with a NACS-to-J1772 adapter (not included). The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway.
- HARDWIRED - PROFESSIONAL INSTALL: This Level 2 charger is hardwired (not plug-in), so a licensed electrician installs it per National Electrical Code. It delivers up to 48A on a dedicated 60A, 240V circuit - enough to charge most EVs fully overnight. Want more speed? Your can set DIP switches 4 and 5 to unlock 50A on a dedicated 70A circuit. Before ordering, check your car’s port type and that your electrical panel can support the circuit.
- CONTROL FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start and stop charging, set the charging speed (6-48A), get reminders, and track how much energy and money each charge uses. Requires a 2.4 GHz home WiFi network.
- SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
- GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.
These part numbers and equipment combinations come from Tesla’s Powershare system configuration note. The cited material does not give a Model 3 or Model Y power-output rating, consumer pricing, or expected outage duration, so those should not be inferred from the Cybertruck specifications.
Which cars are eligible?
Tesla’s technical note says Model 3 and Model Y vehicles ordered in the United States and Puerto Rico after October 1, 2026 qualify when paired with a Powerwall system. The order-date cutoff is specific: it does not establish automatic eligibility for every car built after that date, nor does it guarantee eligibility for vehicles ordered earlier. For other vehicles, Tesla directs owners to its Powershare support guidance to confirm capability.

“Can now do what only Cybertruck could” needs qualification. Tesla’s table lists V2H for Model 3 and Model Y in the specified Powerwall 3 setup. It lists both V2H and V2G for Cybertruck in a separate Powershare System configuration using a Powershare Gateway and Universal Wall Connector. The table does not list Model 3 or Model Y for V2G.

The table reflects Tesla’s configuration note; it is not a claim that every listed vehicle can use every configuration. Tesla’s Cybertruck product-page search excerpt gives up to 9.6 kW of total electric power for Cybertruck. That figure applies to Cybertruck and is not evidence of Model 3 or Model Y output.

What should an owner check before planning on backup?
- Confirm the exact vehicle: check whether its order date and market meet Tesla’s stated eligibility conditions, or ask Tesla to verify an earlier or otherwise different vehicle.
- Confirm the home system: compare the installed Powerwall model and wall connector with Tesla’s documented configuration; Powerwall 2/Powerwall+ feature timing differs from Powerwall 3.
- Confirm the inverter and software: ask Tesla or a qualified installer to verify the vehicle’s Powershare-compatible inverter and current software/app requirements for that car.
- Confirm the function you need: the cited Model 3/Y configuration lists V2H. Do not assume it supports sending energy back to the grid; Tesla’s cited V2G listing is for the Cybertruck configuration.
