On current Tesla Model S, Model X, Model 3, Model Y, and Cybertruck vehicles, the front manual door release is in front of the window switches; pull it up. Rear-door releases vary by model, manual edition, and equipment. Check the instructions for your exact vehicle before opening a door without power.
The quickest distinction is front versus rear: the front release is generally a separate pull-up control, while rear access may involve a cable under the rear-seat carpet, behind a Falcon Wing door speaker grille, or inside a rear-door pocket. Some manuals describe no rear release, and some vehicles may not be equipped with one. Do not rely on a generic instruction if it does not match your vehicle.

Before using a manual door release
Tesla says to use a manual release only when the vehicle has no power or when otherwise necessary. Do not use it while the vehicle is moving: Tesla explicitly gives that warning for Model 3 and Cybertruck. The window may not automatically lower when the door opens, so the glass or trim can be damaged. Follow the procedure for your vehicle rather than assuming every Tesla has the same release.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe release is separate from the normal powered door-opening control. For the models covered here, the front manual release is a pull-up control located in front of the window switches. Rear-door access is different, and some vehicles may not have a rear release.

Keep the window warning in mind before pulling any release: a powered door normally coordinates with the window, but the no-power procedure may not lower the glass automatically. Open carefully and avoid forcing the door against the window, bodywork, or trim. The manuals do not identify a tool or accessory as necessary for these procedures; use the built-in control or cable described for the vehicle.
Manuals also differ by model year, edition, market, configuration, and software version. A procedure in one Tesla manual is not proof that the same release is present on another vehicle with a similar name. If a described cover, cable, grille, or access door is not where expected, stop and confirm the applicable manual rather than prying at unrelated trim.
Locations by Tesla model and manual edition
| Model and manual edition | Front doors | Rear doors |
|---|---|---|
| Current Model S | Pull up the manual release in front of the window switches. | Fold back the carpet below the rear seats to expose the cable; pull it toward the vehicle center. |
| Model S, 2012–2020 | Tesla says the front doors open as usual using the interior handles without electrical power. | Fold back the carpet below the rear seats and pull the exposed cable toward the vehicle center. |
| Model X | Pull up the manual release in front of the window switches. | For a Falcon Wing door, carefully remove the speaker grille, pull the cable down and toward the front of the vehicle, then lift the door manually. |
| Model 3, 2017–2023 manual | Pull up the manual release in front of the window switches. | This manual describes manual releases for the front doors only; it does not describe a rear manual release. |
| Later Model 3 manual | Pull up the manual release in front of the window switches. | At the bottom of the rear-door pocket, remove the release cover and pull the cable forward. |
| Model Y, 2020–2024 manual | Pull up the manual release in front of the window switches. | If fitted, remove the mat at the bottom of the rear-door pocket, press the red tab to remove the access door, then pull the cable forward. Not all vehicles are equipped. |
| Cybertruck | Pull up the manual release in front of the window switches. | Remove the rubber mat at the bottom of the rear-door map pocket, pull the cable forward, then push the door open. |
These are procedures documented in the linked Tesla manuals, not a claim that every vehicle in a model line has identical equipment. In particular, the 2017–2023 Model 3 manual covers front releases only, while a later Model 3 manual describes a rear cable; the 2020–2024 Model Y manual says the rear release is not installed on all vehicles.
The table is meant to help identify the type of access described by a manual, not to replace its sequence. Notice how the rear locations differ: Model S uses carpet below the rear seats; Model X uses a speaker grille for a Falcon Wing door; Model 3 and Model Y procedures refer to a rear-door pocket; and Cybertruck uses the rear-door map pocket. These are distinct access points, so looking in the wrong place can lead to unnecessary trim removal.
How to open each door without power
Front doors
- Locate the manual release in front of the window switches.
- Pull the release up to open the door. The window may not lower automatically, so open carefully to avoid contact between the glass, vehicle body, or trim.
The pull-up control is not the ordinary powered door-opening control. If the vehicle has power and the regular door control is available, Tesla’s guidance is to reserve the manual release for when there is no power or it is otherwise necessary. This distinction matters because the manual release can open the door without the normal window-lowering behavior.
For a 2012–2020 Model S, Tesla’s manual instead says to use the interior handles as usual when electrical power is unavailable. Consult that vehicle’s manual rather than assuming the current Model S arrangement applies.

Model S rear doors
- Fold back the carpet below the rear seats to expose the release cable.
- Pull the cable toward the center of the vehicle.
The same rear-cable location is documented for current Model S and the 2012–2020 manual. This is different from a rear-door pocket access point: look below the rear seats in the carpeted area, as described, rather than searching for a pocket cover.
Because the cable is exposed by folding back the carpet, the access step is part of the procedure. Pulling it toward the vehicle center is also specific guidance; do not substitute the forward pull used in some other model procedures.
Model X Falcon Wing doors
- Carefully remove the speaker grille to access the release cable.
- Pull the cable down and toward the front of the vehicle.
- Lift the Falcon Wing door manually.
This procedure is for a Falcon Wing door. It is not the same as the Model S carpet-and-cable procedure or the pocket-based rear procedures listed for Model 3, Model Y, and Cybertruck. Tesla’s instruction to remove the grille carefully is important: the documented access point is the speaker grille, not an instruction to pry at another nearby panel.
Model 3 rear doors
Use the procedure only if it matches the manual for the specific vehicle. The 2017–2023 manual says only the front doors have manual releases. A later Model 3 manual describes a rear release behind the cover at the bottom of the rear-door pocket: remove the cover and pull the cable forward.
This apparent difference is not a reason to assume either that every Model 3 has a rear release or that none do. It reflects different manual editions. If your vehicle’s manual says only the front doors have manual releases, do not follow a later edition’s rear-cable steps based on the model name alone. If the later procedure applies, the cover at the bottom of the rear-door pocket is the access point and the cable is pulled forward.

The conditional wording matters: Tesla says not all vehicles in the cited Model Y manual range are equipped with the rear release. The mat, red tab, access door, and cable form a sequence for vehicles that do have the feature. If you cannot identify the access door, the manual does not support treating the absence as a fault or forcing another part of the pocket open.
Cybertruck rear doors
- Remove the rubber mat at the bottom of the rear-door map pocket.
- Pull the release cable forward.
- Push the door open.
Cybertruck’s rear access is in the map pocket, and its documented sequence includes pushing the door open after pulling the cable forward. Do not confuse the rubber mat and map pocket with the Model Y procedure, which refers to a rear-door pocket mat and red-tab access door. Follow the exact instructions for the vehicle.
How to confirm which instructions apply
Tesla says manual content is specific to vehicle configuration, options, region, and software version. The safest reference is the manual for the individual vehicle: open the Manual app from the vehicle’s touchscreen app launcher, or use Tesla’s Owner’s Manuals index to select the relevant model and edition. Search within the manual for “Opening Doors with No Power.”

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Start by matching the model and edition rather than relying on a general year range from another vehicle. Then check whether the manual describes a rear release and whether it says the feature is conditional. For a Model 3, the key documented distinction is the 2017–2023 manual versus a later manual. For the cited 2020–2024 Model Y manual, the rear release is explicitly not present on all vehicles. The vehicle’s own manual is the appropriate place to resolve those differences.
The manual pages cited here include a current North American Model S manual identified as software 2026.32 and a 2025-and-later Model Y manual identified as software 2026.26. Manuals and equipment may vary by market and vehicle configuration, so those labels should not be treated as universal fitment guarantees.
Tesla gives this guidance in the Model S owner manual: “For the latest and greatest information that is customized to your vehicle, view the Owner’s Manual on your vehicle’s touchscreen by touching the app launcher and then selecting the Manual app.” That is especially useful when a web page or older manual appears to conflict with what is installed in a specific vehicle.

Frequently asked questions
Where is the manual door release in a Tesla?
For the current Model S, Model X, Model 3, Model Y, and Cybertruck manuals covered here, the front manual release is in front of the window switches and is pulled up. Rear releases are model- and edition-dependent: they may be under the Model S rear-seat carpet, behind a Model X Falcon Wing door speaker grille, or in a rear-door pocket. Confirm your own manual before using a rear procedure.
Do all Tesla rear doors have a manual release?
No. The 2017–2023 Model 3 manual describes front releases only, and Tesla says not all vehicles in the cited 2020–2024 Model Y range have a rear release. Later Model 3 instructions do describe a rear cable. The documentation and equipment differ, so do not assume a rear release is present just because another Tesla has one.
Why do Model 3 rear-release instructions disagree?
The cited 2017–2023 manual says only the front doors have manual releases, while a later Model 3 manual describes a rear cable behind a cover at the bottom of the rear-door pocket. The appropriate procedure depends on the manual edition and the vehicle. Use the manual selected for your specific car rather than combining the two instructions.
Will the window lower when I use the manual release?
It may not lower automatically. Tesla warns that opening a door without that normal window movement can damage the window or vehicle trim. Open carefully and avoid forcing the glass against the body or trim.
Can I use a manual release while the Tesla is moving?
No. Tesla explicitly warns not to use the manual door release while the vehicle is moving in its Model 3 and Cybertruck safety instructions. The general guidance is to use the manual release only when the vehicle has no power or when otherwise necessary.

Do I need a tool or replacement part to open the door?
The cited instructions describe built-in releases and access steps; they do not identify a tool, accessory, replacement part, or paid manual as necessary. Follow the applicable manual’s procedure and do not pry at trim that is not identified as an access point.
Where can I find the right Tesla instructions?
Open the Manual app from the vehicle’s touchscreen app launcher, or select the vehicle and edition from Tesla’s Owner’s Manuals index. Search for “Opening Doors with No Power.” Tesla says manual information is specific to configuration, options, region, and software version.
