Tesla accounted for 11% of Luminar’s total revenue in the first quarter of 2024, according to Luminar’s SEC filing. That made Tesla a major customer for the quarter, but the disclosure does not show that Luminar lidar was installed in Tesla production cars. Industry coverage has described testing and validation as the likely context; Luminar’s filing does not say what Tesla bought the sensors for.
What the 11% figure actually measures
Luminar’s Form 10-Q reports that Tesla represented 11% of Luminar’s revenue for the three months ended March 31, 2024. Luminar reported total quarterly revenue of $20.968 million. The denominator is Luminar’s company-wide revenue—not lidar-only sales, Tesla’s revenue, or a share of the global lidar market. Luminar’s Q1 2024 Form 10-Q is the primary source for the percentage and total revenue.
TechCrunch described Tesla as Luminar’s largest lidar customer in Q1 and characterized its contribution as a little over $2 million. That is a rounded media account; the more precise SEC disclosure is 11% of total Luminar revenue. Neither figure should be presented as a current sales share. TechCrunch’s May 7, 2024 report covered the disclosure.
Did Tesla put Luminar lidar in its production cars?
The Q1 filing confirms a customer relationship and its share of revenue, but it does not identify the vehicles involved, the purpose of the purchases, sensor quantities, per-unit prices, or contract terms. It therefore does not establish that Luminar lidar was standard or optional equipment on any Tesla production model.

Optics & Photonics News reported that Tesla was known to use lidar units to test and validate vision data. That provides a plausible testing context, not confirmation of the specific purpose of the purchases disclosed in the filing. Optics & Photonics News’ May 11, 2024 coverage discusses that reported use.
Why the purchase contrasts with Musk’s comments
At Tesla’s 2019 Autonomy Day event, Elon Musk publicly criticized reliance on lidar. TechCrunch quoted him saying, “anyone relying on lidar is doomed!” and describing lidar as “expensive sensors that are unnecessary.” Those remarks show why the Q1 2024 customer disclosure attracted attention, but they do not explain Tesla’s engineering decisions or prove that the company reversed its approach to production vehicles.

A company can use a sensor in development, testing, or validation without choosing it for a production system. The public statements and the reported purchases can therefore coexist; the available filing does not disclose the rationale behind the purchases.
Is Tesla still Luminar’s top buyer?
The 11% figure and “largest customer” description refer to Q1 2024. Luminar’s 2025 Form 10-K, filed March 27, 2026, does not mention Tesla by name. That filing does not establish that the commercial relationship ended, but it also does not support calling Tesla Luminar’s current top buyer. Luminar’s 2025 Form 10-K is the later filing checked for this question.

What Luminar sells—and what the filing leaves open
Luminar’s filing describes its Autonomy Solutions segment as designing, manufacturing, and selling lidar sensors mainly to automotive original-equipment manufacturers, commercial-vehicle makers, robotaxi operators, and adjacent industries. The company also reports revenue from non-recurring engineering services and licensing information. The filing does not break Tesla’s contribution down by sensor, service, or other revenue category, so the 11% cannot be attributed solely to a particular product.
