Tesla’s January 2, 2022 delivery release reported 936,172 vehicles delivered in 2021, up from 2,650 in 2012 in the year-by-year sequence associated with this title. That 2021 figure was preliminary: Tesla’s later 2021 Form 10-K reported 936,222. The “zero” at 2011 is the series’ starting point, not a claim that Tesla had delivered no vehicles by then.

Tesla deliveries by year in the title-linked series

The figures below reproduce the annual sequence published by Tech Times and Jon Erlichman. They describe calendar-year deliveries, not cumulative deliveries. This is a publication-era series rather than a fully reconciled set of final figures from Tesla filings.

Calendar year Deliveries in the title-linked series
2011 0
2012 2,650
2013 22,477
2014 31,655
2015 50,580
2016 76,295
2017 103,097
2018 245,240
2019 367,550 in the article body; 367,500 in its embedded list
2020 499,550
2021 936,172

The 2019 entry is internally inconsistent in the title-linked article. Tesla’s January 2020 preliminary release gave approximately 367,500 deliveries; its later 2019 Form 10-K reported 367,656. Those are different reporting vintages, so they should not be silently substituted into the table.

How the annual totals changed

The series moves from 2,650 deliveries in 2012 to 76,295 in 2016, then records a larger step between 2017 and 2018—from 103,097 to 245,240. It rises again to 499,550 in 2020 and 936,172 in 2021. These figures show the scale and pace of growth in annual deliveries; by themselves, they do not establish why growth occurred or how the company performed financially.

Why “zero in 2011” needs context

The zero is the starting value used in this annual sequence, not a count of all Tesla vehicles delivered since the company began. Tesla’s 2011 Form 10-K says approximately 2,150 Roadsters had been delivered cumulatively by December 31, 2011. The filing also says Roadster production concluded in January 2012. A cumulative figure through year-end and a year-specific series value are different measures.

Preliminary 2021 figure versus later company filings

Tesla’s January 2, 2022 Q4 2021 Vehicle Production & Deliveries release reported 930,422 vehicles produced and 936,172 delivered during 2021. The release split deliveries into 24,964 Model S/X and 911,208 Model 3/Y.

Tesla’s later 2021 Form 10-K reported 936,222 deliveries. That filed total is 50 higher than the January preliminary figure, so use 936,172 when describing what Tesla reported at the time the title’s endpoint was published, and 936,222 when citing the later 10-K.

Later company reporting also gives different historical values. Tesla’s 2022 operational summary presents adjusted totals of 103,181 for 2017, 245,506 for 2018, 367,656 for 2019, 499,647 for 2020, and 936,222 for 2021. These retrospective figures should be identified as such rather than mixed into the title-linked sequence.

How Tesla counted deliveries—and what the totals can show

In its January 2, 2022 release, Tesla said: “Our delivery count should be viewed as slightly conservative, as we only count a car as delivered if it is transferred to the customer and all paperwork is correct.” The company said final numbers could vary by 0.5% or more and cautioned that deliveries alone should not be relied on as an indicator of quarterly financial results.

A delivery count is therefore a measure of vehicles transferred to customers under Tesla’s stated counting rule, not a substitute for revenue, profitability, or a full financial report. The year and reporting source matter whenever figures from the title-era sequence are compared with later company filings.
