The answer depends on both geography and the date of the listing. Tesla’s Q3 2025 update described Model Y Standard and Model Y Performance in the U.S., alongside Model YL in China. Its U.S. product page accessed October 8, 2026, uses a different set of labels: Model Y, Model Y Premium, Model Y L Premium, and Model Y Performance. These are separate naming snapshots, not evidence of a single worldwide trim structure.

Tesla’s Q3 2025 investor update said the company launched Model Y Standard and Model Y Performance in the United States. It described the Standard as starting at $39,990 and offering over 300 miles of range at launch. Those are historical launch figures from the update, not a current quote or a guarantee of today’s configuration or range.

China’s longer Model YL
The same update introduced Model YL in China, describing a longer-wheelbase Model Y with six seats across three rows. That makes the “L” a meaningful distinction in seating and vehicle layout, not just a new label for the standard five-seat Model Y. The announcement concerns China; confirm whether a Model YL is offered in your market before comparing it with local versions.

Tesla’s U.S. page now presents Model Y, Model Y Premium, Model Y L Premium, and Model Y Performance. The page is a U.S.-specific snapshot. It does not establish that every name is available elsewhere or that the names will remain unchanged.

Did Tesla rename the Model Y trims?
Tesla has changed the names it uses across its Model Y lineup, but the cited updates do not establish a simple one-to-one renaming in which every older trim maps directly to a newer one. The Q3 2025 U.S. labels and the later U.S. page show different naming snapshots; China’s Model YL is a separate longer-wheelbase, six-seat proposition. Treat each name as a market- and date-specific offering, then compare the actual configuration details in your local configurator.
How should you compare Model Y versions?
Start with the exact market and date, then match the configurations on the details that affect how you will use and pay for the vehicle. Tesla’s published material cited here does not provide a complete, current, apples-to-apples feature and total-cost comparison for every version.

- Seating and space: Distinguish a standard five-seat Model Y from the six-seat, three-row Model YL description. Confirm local availability and the seating layout of the specific vehicle.
- Range and test cycle: Match the trim, drivetrain, wheel size, and measurement standard before comparing estimates. WLTP and EPA results are not interchangeable.
- Price and fees: Check the current local quote and identify what it includes. Tesla says prices may change; its U.S. page also notes that certain fees are excluded from the displayed Model Y L Premium price.
- Equipment and performance: Compare acceleration, comfort, displays, seating, and included features only when the same-market configurator supplies comparable details.
What do Tesla’s range and refresh claims mean?
Tesla’s European article, published October 27, 2025 and last updated April 13, 2026, says the redesigned Model Y was being produced at Giga Berlin for Europe, with additional trims to follow. It reports a 378-mile estimated range for the Premium Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive with 19-inch standard wheels under the WLTP test cycle. Tesla warns that actual range varies with factors including speed, weather, and elevation. This WLTP figure should not be compared as if it were the same measure as U.S. EPA figures shown on Tesla’s U.S. page.
Tesla also says the redesign reduced road noise by 22%, impact noise by 20%, and wind noise by 20%, and delivered 5% more range with the same battery energy than earlier Model Y vehicles. These are the automaker’s comparisons; the cited page does not provide an independent test protocol for those figures.

What does the 2026 NHTSA finding cover?
On May 7, 2026, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said later-release 2026 Tesla Model Y vehicles manufactured on or after November 12, 2025, passed four newly added advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) evaluations: pedestrian automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assistance, blind spot warning, and blind spot intervention. NHTSA also said the Model Y passed four original ADAS criteria: forward collision warning, crash imminent braking, dynamic brake support, and lane departure warning.
This is a finding about specified ADAS tests for qualifying vehicles, not a blanket endorsement of every Model Y or every dimension of vehicle safety. NHTSA says driver-assistance systems are designed to assist drivers, who must remain attentive and in control. See the agency’s May 7, 2026 announcement for the scope of its evaluation.
