That ranking was a forecast, not a verified current fact. In 2015, a report about Tesla’s Nevada Gigafactory said the completed factory was projected to be slightly smaller than Boeing’s Everett plant. Tesla later reported a smaller built area and continued to describe the Nevada site as expanding; the available figures do not establish a current, like-for-like ranking.
Where the “second-largest” claim came from
On November 17, 2015, GeekWire summarized a Fast Company preview of Tesla’s Gigafactory under construction in Nevada. The preview projected that the main factory would cover 13.6 million square feet and be completed by 2020. It described the finished facility as “only slightly smaller” than Boeing’s Everett, Washington, plant, which it called the world’s largest building by volume. GeekWire’s 2015 report framed this as a projection about a future facility, not a measurement of a completed plant.
The same report put the surrounding grounds at about 3,000 acres. That is the size of the site, not the factory’s floor area; acreage and building area cannot be compared as if they were the same measure.
What Tesla later reported about Gigafactory Nevada
In a January 24, 2023 update, Tesla said it had built 5.4 million square feet at Gigafactory Nevada. The company also announced plans for a 100 GWh 4680 cell factory and a high-volume Semi factory. The 5.4 million figure describes area built at that point; it is not a final total for an expanding site. Tesla’s 2023 update does not compare that area with Boeing Everett.

Tesla’s current Gigafactory Nevada page describes an operating site making batteries, energy storage products, electric motors and powertrains, and notes expansion plans that include a lithium iron phosphate cell factory and the first high-volume Semi factory. It does not give a comparable total building-area figure or rank the facility against Boeing.
Why the published square-foot figures do not settle the ranking
Tesla’s 2019 Impact Report described Gigafactory 1 as a battery and motor manufacturing facility in Sparks, Nevada. It said cell production began in January 2017 and projected that the site would reach 15 million square feet “when completed,” calling that a footprint projection. The report does not establish that the projected area was later completed. Tesla’s 2019 Impact Report therefore adds another historical forecast, not a current measured total.

The figures refer to different dates and statuses: a 2015 projection for the main factory, a 2019 projection for the facility “when completed,” and Tesla’s 2023 report of area built to date. The Everett comparison in the 2015 account is explicitly about building volume, while Tesla’s 2019 statement concerns footprint. Without current measurements for both sites using the same metric, these numbers cannot confirm which factory ranks second today.

What can be said with confidence
