That is not the same as a cash-buyback program: Tesla provides a final, inspection-dependent offer after you place an order. A private sale has a separate question: the Cybertruck manual explains how to transfer vehicle ownership in the app, but Tesla’s public FAQ and the contract accepted for your order leave room for restrictions. Check your own agreement before selling.
How Tesla Cybertruck trade-ins work
Tesla’s U.S. trade-in policy says it accepts passenger cars, trucks, vans, and SUVs—including internal-combustion vehicles and EVs—toward a new or Certified Pre-Owned Tesla purchase. - Submit the vehicle’s VIN, odometer mileage, ZIP code, and damage history through Tesla’s trade-in process. Tesla may request photos.
- Place an order for an eligible Tesla. Tesla says the final trade-in offer becomes available after the order is placed.
- Have the vehicle inspected. The offer is subject to physical inspection and may depend on the accuracy of the information supplied.
- Review the offer and its deadline before deciding. Tesla says offers are non-negotiable, it does not match competing offers, and a final offer expires after 30 days or 1,000 miles, whichever comes first.
Tesla says its value calculation for Tesla vehicles considers configuration, vehicle history, mileage, age, owner-provided details, market data, and internal product knowledge. A trade-in can also affect the purchase agreement through loan payoff or equity; Tesla advises checking state tax rules, which vary.
What a Cybertruck might be worth
Valuation pages provide estimates, not guaranteed offers or completed-sale prices. The figures below are specific to Kelley Blue Book’s checked 2026 All-Wheel Drive Pickup 4D 6 ft configuration. KBB says value depends on condition and market factors, and its depreciation estimates are not guaranteed. For a second reference point, Edmunds currently says its 2026 Cybertruck page does not have enough data for an accurate appraisal. Is private sale now allowed?
There are two distinct issues: the app’s ability to transfer vehicle ownership and the terms of the agreement you accepted when ordering. Tesla’s Cybertruck manual documents an operational path: after a sale, the owner can factory-reset the vehicle and remove or transfer it in the Tesla app. If the previous owner cannot complete the transfer, a third-party buyer may be able to claim ownership. That procedure does not establish that every owner’s purchase agreement permits resale without conditions. Tesla’s Cybertruck FAQ asks, “Can I transfer my reservation to someone else or resell my vehicle after delivery?” Its displayed answer begins “No,” then discusses reservations being non-transferable and orders believed to have been made for resale being subject to cancellation. Tesla’s indexed U.S. order-agreement template is version US v.20250904, but the applicable terms depend on what an individual owner accepted and when. Why one depreciation percentage can mislead
A reported individual quote is not a market-wide depreciation rate. On May 25, 2025, TechTimes reported a Tesla trade-in quote of $63,100 for one 2024 AWD Cybertruck described as costing $100,000 and having 19,623 miles. The report characterized the implied loss as 37%, but it was a reported quote—not a completed transaction, an independent appraisal, or a representative statistic. A sound comparison identifies the vehicle’s configuration, condition, mileage, location, and valuation date, and distinguishes among a dealer’s inspected offer, a valuation service’s estimate, and a completed private sale. The KBB figures above illustrate that condition alone changes the estimate; they do not establish what a particular owner will receive.

How to compare a trade-in with a private sale
- Check your contract first: Review the terms tied to your order date and any addendum before pursuing a private sale.
- Get comparable values: Match trim, mileage, condition, and location when using valuation tools; record the date because estimates can change.
- Compare net proceeds: Account for loan payoff or negative equity and any state-specific tax or title consequences, rather than comparing headline estimates alone.
- Weigh certainty against effort: Tesla’s final figure is subject to inspection and has an expiration deadline; a private-party estimate is not a buyer’s commitment, and completing a sale requires handling the transaction and ownership transfer.
