By April, Axios reported that the two models had been discontinued. Tesla’s stated goal of eventually making one million robots a year in the space is a target—not a measure of current production.
Is Tesla discontinuing the Model S and Model X?
Yes. On its January 28, 2026 earnings call, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the company expected to wind down production in the following quarter and “basically stop production” of both vehicles. Axios reported on April 22, 2026 that the Model S and Model X had been discontinued to make way for Optimus production in Fremont. That later status comes from Axios; Tesla’s subsequent Q2 filing discussed preparations for large-scale Optimus manufacturing rather than confirming a completed factory conversion.
Why is Tesla ending Model S and Model X production?
Tesla described the move as part of a broader shift toward autonomy and humanoid robots. Musk said: “It’s time to basically bring the Model S and X programs to an end with an honorable discharge, because we’re really moving into a future that is based on autonomy,” as reported by TechCrunch.
The Model S launched in 2012 and the Model X in 2015, according to TechCrunch. Tesla’s announcement marked the end of two established vehicle programs, but the sources cited here do not establish a specific sales decline as the reason for the decision.

What is Tesla building at the Fremont factory?
Tesla plans to repurpose the Model S and Model X production space for Optimus, its humanoid robot program. The company’s Q4 2025 update deck described Optimus Gen 3 as its first design intended for mass production and said production on the first line was planned to begin before the end of 2026. It also described eventual planned capacity of one million robots per year. Musk separately set a long-term goal of making one million robots annually in the former S/X space.
Those figures describe plans, not achieved production. In its Q2 2026 filing, Tesla said it was preparing and investing for large-scale Optimus production, while noting uncertainties involved in establishing and ramping manufacturing operations. The filing did not confirm that the factory conversion was complete or that the line had reached its planned capacity.

Will Tesla continue supporting existing Model S and Model X owners?
TechCrunch reported that Musk said Tesla would support existing owners “for as long as people have the vehicles.” The statement is broad; the sources do not specify which services it covers, geographic availability, parts supply, or operational limits. It should not be read as a detailed guarantee for any particular repair or service.
