BYD sold 2.26 million electric vehicles in 2025, compared with Tesla’s 1.64 million deliveries, according to the Associated Press. That puts BYD ahead on reported annual EV volume. But the comparison needs careful labeling: BYD’s separate total of more than 4.6 million New Energy Vehicles includes plug-in hybrids, while Tesla’s figure is vehicle deliveries. One year’s ranking also does not establish a lasting lead in profitability, technology or market influence.
How BYD moved ahead of Tesla in 2025
The clearest comparison is the annual volume reported by the Associated Press: BYD sold 2.26 million electric vehicles in 2025, while Tesla delivered 1.64 million vehicles. Tesla’s deliveries were down 9% from 2024. On these reported figures, BYD passed Tesla in annual EV volume.
The figures come from different company reporting language—BYD sales and Tesla deliveries—so they are best treated as a published annual-volume comparison, not as a complete, independently standardized measure of every vehicle category. The AP’s report is the source for both figures: Associated Press, 2026.
Why BYD’s 4.6 million figure is not the same comparison
BYD separately reported more than 4.6 million New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) delivered worldwide in 2025, including exports exceeding 1 million units. NEVs are a broader category than battery-electric vehicles (BEVs): BYD’s total includes plug-in hybrids as well as battery-electric vehicles. It should not be compared directly with a BEV-only total or described as 4.6 million battery-electric cars.

The company’s global statement identifies the total as NEVs and gives the export figure: BYD Global, 2026. The available figures do not provide a complete regional market-share comparison, so they show scale and exports, not how BYD and Tesla ranked in every country.
What Tesla’s decline says—and does not say
Tesla’s 2025 Form 10-K reported that automotive sales revenue fell by $6.66 billion, or 9%, from 2024. Tesla attributed the decline to approximately 8% fewer cash deliveries and a lower average selling price per unit, driven by sales mix and higher customer incentives. This gives financial context to the delivery decline, but it does not by itself explain the full competitive shift or establish why individual customers chose one brand over another.

Tesla also cautions that deliveries are only one measure of company performance and should not be relied on alone as an indicator of quarterly financial results. Its filing says prices, cost of sales and foreign-exchange movements also matter. The filing describes the worldwide automotive market as highly competitive and says Tesla expects competition to increase as established and new manufacturers enter the EV market. BYD’s higher vehicle volume is not the same as stronger profitability. The Associated Press reported that BYD’s 2025 revenue rose 3.5% to 804 billion yuan ($116 billion), while annual profit declined 19% to 32.6 billion yuan ($4.7 billion). These reported figures show revenue growth alongside a profit decline, rather than an across-the-board improvement.

BYD chairman Wang Chuan-fu described the competitive pressure in the company’s NEV industry as having reached a “fever pitch” and entering a “brutal ‘knockout stage,’” as quoted by AP. Sales rank, revenue growth and annual profit are separate measures; none alone settles which company is financially stronger overall. Associated Press, 2026.
What the 2025 ranking means for the EV market
The supported conclusion is specific: BYD moved ahead of Tesla on reported annual EV sales volume in 2025, while Tesla’s deliveries declined. BYD’s broader NEV count underscores its scale but is not a like-for-like BEV comparison. BYD’s revenue rose as its profit fell, and Tesla’s filing emphasizes that deliveries do not capture all the factors behind financial performance.
That makes 2025 a meaningful change in the annual ranking, not proof that Tesla’s influence has permanently ended or that BYD will retain the lead. The published figures do not establish a lasting market order, a model-by-model advantage or a complete regional comparison.
