Tesla is gaining ground in Japan’s imported-EV segment, but that does not mean it dominates Japan’s car market. Tesla Japan says the Model Y led foreign-brand model registrations in the first half of 2026; meanwhile, battery-electric vehicles accounted for just 1.44% of new passenger-car registrations in 2025. The fairest verdict: Tesla looks strong in a still-small niche, with a full-year 2026 picture not yet established.
Is Tesla selling well in Japan?
By the measures available, Tesla’s position among imported electric vehicles strengthened in early 2026. But the evidence describes registrations in a particular segment and period—not Tesla’s share of all Japanese vehicle sales, and not deliveries to customers.
Tesla Japan’s August 27, 2026 release, citing JATO Dynamics data, says the Model Y ranked first among foreign-brand vehicle models by new registrations in Japan from January through June 2026, across all powertrains. The company also says the Model Y ranked first among foreign-brand EV models in each of those six months and made up about 48% of foreign-brand EV new registrations. Tesla cautions that these are registrations, not retail sales or deliveries, and that the classifications differ from Japan Automobile Importers Association (JAIA) import statistics. A separate JAIA-based report offers a brand-level indicator: EVcafe reported 2,000 Tesla registrations in May 2026 and 8,194 from January through May, placing Tesla fourth among imported brands year to date. JAIA’s statistics group Tesla under “Others” rather than naming it separately, so these figures are reported by EVcafe, not directly itemized in JAIA’s table. EVcafe’s report.

How large is Japan’s EV market?
Tesla’s imported-EV standing should be read against the size of the wider market. The Institute for Sustainable Energy Policies (ISEP), using data it identifies as coming from JADA and Zenkoku Keijidosha Kyokai, reports these 2025 figures for new passenger-car registrations:

What the numbers do—and do not—show
- Model ranking is not brand-wide market share. The first-half claim is about the Model Y’s rank among foreign-brand vehicle models; the 48% figure is its share of foreign-brand EV registrations, according to Tesla Japan.
- Brand registrations and model registrations are different measures. EVcafe’s January–May count concerns Tesla registrations, while Tesla Japan’s ranking concerns the Model Y.
- Registrations are not deliveries or retail sales. The sources use registration data, and Tesla explicitly distinguishes its figures from customer sales and deliveries.
- The periods and datasets should not be merged. The 2025 ISEP market totals, Tesla Japan’s January–June 2026 JATO-based figures, and EVcafe’s January–May JAIA-based report are different measures. They cannot be combined into a single growth rate or market share.
Tesla Japan also cited a historical milestone in its 2026 release, saying the achievement came 12 years after it began introducing the Model S in Japan. That is the company’s characterization, not an independent measure of market position.
Can Tesla sustain its momentum?
The available evidence supports a strong first-half position in imported EVs, but does not establish Tesla’s full-year 2026 registrations or its full-year share of Japan’s BEV market. A more complete judgment would need to check whether the registration momentum continued through the rest of the year and how Tesla performed against all BEV brands—not only foreign-brand models.

What charging and service support means for owners
Market position alone does not determine whether an EV is practical to own. Charging access and service availability matter too. Tesla Japan says it plans to continue expanding charging infrastructure and strengthening its service network. It also reported more than 40 experience locations. For a prospective owner, the useful question is whether charging and service support work for the routes and area they actually use. The figures cited here do not provide an independently measured comparison of Tesla’s present service coverage across Japan.

How to judge whether Tesla is thriving or struggling
“Thriving” depends on the comparison. Tesla’s early-2026 Model Y ranking and reported share point to strength within the foreign-brand EV segment. Japan’s 2025 BEV share, by contrast, shows that the overall market for battery-electric cars remained modest. These facts can both be true: Tesla can gain ground in its niche while BEVs remain a small part of new passenger-car registrations.
For a fair assessment, keep the comparison consistent: use the same period, distinguish model rankings from brand totals, compare registrations with registrations, and separate the imported-EV segment from the entire Japanese market. On that basis, Tesla appears to be strengthening its niche position; the available figures do not show it dominating Japan’s overall car market.
