Short answer: Tesla Full Self-Driving (Supervised) is the broader, route-oriented driver-assistance package. Tesla describes it attempting navigation on residential and city streets, highways, turns, lane changes, parking and some Summon functions. Ford BlueCruise is a hands-free, eyes-on highway system that works only on designated Blue Zones. Neither system is autonomous: you remain responsible for driving and must be ready to intervene.
The practical choice depends less on the names than on where you drive, which vehicle and software version you own, whether mapped Blue Zones cover your routes, and which payment structure fits your ownership plans.

Route-oriented assistance beyond a highway
Tesla presents FSD (Supervised) as a package that can attempt to follow a destination route on a variety of roads. Its described tasks include navigating residential and city streets, traveling on highways, changing lanes, making turns, parking and using certain Summon functions. Those capabilities make it broader in road coverage than a system limited to mapped divided highways.

“Attempt” is important. A feature being listed does not mean it will be available on every Tesla, in every country, or in every software release. Tesla ties availability to the vehicle’s configuration, hardware, software, location and regulatory approval. A function can therefore be described by Tesla while remaining unavailable to a particular car or market.
Supervised does not mean autonomous
The driver remains responsible for continuously supervising the vehicle. Tesla’s Model 3 owner’s manual states: “Full Self-Driving (Supervised) requires a fully attentive driver and will display a series of escalating warnings requiring driver response.” The same manual warns that intervention may be needed at construction zones, complex intersections and narrow roads with oncoming traffic.
That requirement changes how to interpret the product name. FSD (Supervised) can perform more types of driving tasks than a conventional cruise-control system, but it does not transfer legal or operational responsibility to the car. You must monitor what it is doing, keep your attention on traffic and be able to take control immediately.
What Ford BlueCruise is designed to do
Hands-free assistance inside mapped Blue Zones
BlueCruise is Ford’s hands-free highway assistance feature. It works only on designated Blue Zones rather than on any road where the driver chooses to activate it. The system builds on Adaptive Cruise Control, and Ford describes some model and version combinations as offering automatic lane changes or in-lane repositioning.
The geographic restriction is central to the product. NHTSA’s 2025 engineering analysis describes hands-free operation as available only on certain roadways that are geofenced using vehicle GPS. A route can therefore be suitable for BlueCruise for one stretch and outside the system’s supported area for another. Check the current map and service terms for the vehicle you are considering.

“Hands-free” still requires eyes-on supervision
Ford explicitly says, “BlueCruise is not full self-driving technology.” Hands-free refers to steering-wheel contact, not to the driver’s attention. Ford requires the driver to keep eyes on the road and be prepared to take control. NHTSA’s analysis says the system uses camera-based driver monitoring to check that requirement.
Road coverage is the practical dividing line
When most of your driving is mixed-road or urban
If a normal trip starts on a residential street, continues through city intersections and ends on a highway, Tesla’s described operating envelope is the closer match on paper. Its package is intended to attempt route navigation across those road types, subject to eligibility and local approval.

Urban construction, unusual intersections, narrow lanes, oncoming traffic and other complex situations can require immediate driver intervention. You still have to supervise every segment.
When most of your driving is a mapped highway commute
BlueCruise is tailored to highway travel within designated Blue Zones. For a driver whose regular interstate or divided-highway commute stays inside those zones, its hands-free operation can reduce the need to hold the steering wheel while retaining the eyes-on requirement.
It is not a general city-driving system. If your route leaves the mapped network, you cannot treat the BlueCruise label as authorization to use hands-free assistance on the remaining roads. Confirm coverage for the exact roads you use rather than relying on a broad statement that BlueCruise is available in your state or province.

What both systems have in common
Both are Level 2 driver-assistance systems in the safety framework used by NHTSA: the system can provide continuous assistance with acceleration or braking and steering while the driver remains fully engaged and attentive. Neither system turns the vehicle into an autonomous taxi, removes the need to monitor traffic or guarantees that it will handle every road situation.

Driver attention, warnings and safety evidence
Tesla’s supervision model
Tesla’s documentation requires active supervision and warns that the vehicle may ask for intervention. Escalating warnings require a driver response. The manual’s examples—construction zones, complex intersections and narrow roads with oncoming traffic—illustrate why a driver cannot safely use the system as a passenger.
Ford’s eyes-on model
BlueCruise’s hands-free mode uses driver monitoring, but the driver’s eyes must remain on the road. Removing steering-wheel contact does not authorize reading, using a phone or turning attention away from traffic. You must be ready to steer, brake or otherwise take control whenever conditions require it.
What the NHTSA investigation does and does not show
NHTSA’s 2025 engineering analysis says the agency opened a preliminary evaluation after receiving notice of two fatal collisions involving BlueCruise-equipped Mustang Mach-E vehicles. That is investigation context, not a finding that BlueCruise caused those collisions and not evidence that Tesla’s system is safer.
The same analysis says Ford reported 2,539,962 Ford and Lincoln vehicles with partial driving-automation systems within the scope of NHTSA’s information request. That figure includes systems beyond BlueCruise, so it should not be presented as the number of BlueCruise-equipped vehicles.

Why the available statistics cannot settle the comparison
Tesla’s support material reports “7x fewer major and minor collisions” and “5x fewer off-highway collisions” for vehicles with FSD (Supervised) engaged compared with Tesla’s stated baseline. Those are company-reported comparisons, not independent head-to-head results against BlueCruise, and the retrieved material does not provide a publication year for them.
No directly comparable, independent FSD-versus-BlueCruise safety statistic is established by the cited materials. Driving environment, driver behavior, vehicle model, software version and exposure all affect collision rates, so a single manufacturer number cannot rank the two systems for your use.

Checking a Tesla
For Tesla, verify the specific vehicle’s hardware and software configuration in the vehicle account and confirm that FSD (Supervised) is offered in the country where the car will operate. Tesla says feature availability and pricing can change, and regulatory approval can delay or limit functions. A used vehicle’s history, installed hardware and current software can therefore matter as much as its model name.
Checking a Ford
Ford’s listed availability identifies BlueCruise 1.5 or higher on 2025 or 2026 Mustang Mach-E vehicles and 2026 Explorer vehicles. Treat that as a starting point, not a blanket guarantee. Use the vehicle identification number to confirm the installed version, check the current Blue Zones map and verify the required service plan or purchase terms.

Why model year alone is insufficient
Two cars with the same badge can have different sensors, software releases, subscription status or regional approvals. Before comparing prices or capabilities, confirm the exact VIN, model year, trim, hardware version, software version, operating country and current map or service status.

Pricing and payment structures in the United States
| Service | Monthly | Annual | One-time option | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tesla FSD (Supervised) | $99 | Not listed as an annual plan in the cited material | Not available through this subscription offering | Subscription price and features are subject to change; eligibility varies by vehicle and location. |
| Ford BlueCruise | $49.99 | $495 | $2,495 when buying from a Ford dealer | Ford says prices may change; availability depends on eligible vehicle, software, map and service terms. |
Using the listed figures only, twelve Tesla monthly payments total $1,188 before any applicable taxes or future price changes. Twelve Ford monthly payments total $599.88, while the listed annual plan is $495, a difference of $104.88 for a full year at those prices. The Ford one-time price is roughly five annual payments at the listed annual rate, but that simple arithmetic does not account for changing prices, vehicle ownership length, resale value or service-plan conditions.
These amounts are not an apples-to-apples value ranking. Tesla’s package is described as covering more road types and tasks, while BlueCruise’s lower listed price buys access to a geographically restricted highway feature. Compare the driving coverage you will actually use, not just the subscription number.
How to verify a car before committing
- Identify the exact vehicle. Record the VIN, model year, trim, installed hardware and current software version. Do not rely only on the model badge.
- Confirm regional approval. Check the manufacturer’s current availability information for the country or state where the vehicle will operate. Tesla notes that regulatory approval and location can limit FSD features.
- Check the operating map. For Ford, compare your actual roads with the current Blue Zones map and verify the vehicle’s map and service status. A general statement that BlueCruise is offered in your region is not enough.
- Price the correct term. Compare Tesla’s monthly subscription with Ford’s monthly, annual and dealer-purchase choices. Confirm whether the quoted amount is still current before paying.
- Read the vehicle-specific instructions. Review the owner’s manual and the on-screen driver-monitoring and takeover warnings. Make sure every regular driver understands that supervision remains mandatory.
- Plan for unsupported sections. Identify construction areas, city streets, narrow roads, complex intersections and highway segments outside Blue Zones where you may need to drive without the assistance feature.
Which system fits which driver?
Choose based on mixed-road coverage
Tesla is the more relevant option if your priority is one supervised package that can attempt a destination route across residential streets, city roads and highways, and your specific Tesla is eligible. You are accepting a monthly subscription and the responsibility to monitor a system that may require intervention in difficult urban or roadway situations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose based on mapped-highway convenience
BlueCruise is the more targeted option if your main need is hands-free, eyes-on assistance during highway travel and your regular roads are inside Blue Zones. Its pricing offers more billing choices, but its usefulness falls when your trips spend substantial time on roads outside the mapped network.
Do not choose on the word “self-driving”
The names describe marketing packages, not autonomous driving capability. Tesla’s “Supervised” label and Ford’s statement that BlueCruise is not full self-driving both point to the same operational rule: the human driver must remain attentive and capable of taking over.
Do not use price as a safety proxy
A lower subscription price does not demonstrate lower or higher risk. The available materials do not provide a like-for-like safety test, and the systems operate in different environments. Select the one whose supported roads, vehicle requirements and payment terms match your actual use.
Common misconceptions to avoid
- “Hands-free means I can stop watching.” No. BlueCruise requires eyes on the road, and camera-based monitoring checks driver attention.
- “FSD means the Tesla is autonomous.” No. Tesla requires active supervision, escalating warnings and immediate driver intervention when requested.
- “BlueCruise works anywhere Adaptive Cruise Control works.” No. Hands-free operation is restricted to designated, GPS-geofenced Blue Zones.
- “A manufacturer safety statistic compares the two brands.” No. Tesla’s reported collision figures use its own baseline and are not a head-to-head study against BlueCruise.
- “Every vehicle with the same name has the same functions.” No. Hardware, software, model year, market approval, map coverage and service status can change eligibility.
Bottom line
Tesla FSD (Supervised) is the broader described system, covering more road types and attempting more route-driving tasks when the vehicle and region support them. Ford BlueCruise is a narrower but clearly defined hands-free, eyes-on highway feature limited to mapped Blue Zones. Both remain Level 2 assistance: keep your eyes and attention on driving, follow the vehicle’s warnings and be ready to take control at all times.
