Short answer: Tesla’s Autopilot functions are primarily driving aids for maintaining speed, following distance and lane position. Full Self-Driving (Supervised) is intended to attempt a complete route, including turns, intersections, roundabouts, lane changes and highway entry or exit, even on some city and residential roads. Neither system is autonomous: you must remain attentive, supervise continuously and be ready to take over.
The essential difference
“Autopilot” and “Full Self-Driving (Supervised)” are not two settings with identical capabilities. They describe different scopes of driver assistance.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
At its basic level, Autopilot combines Traffic-Aware Cruise Control and Autosteer. Traffic-Aware Cruise Control regulates speed and following distance from traffic ahead. Autosteer adds steering to keep the Tesla in its lane while continuing to manage speed and following distance. These functions are generally suited to a road where lane markings are clear, subject to the exact vehicle and manual.
FSD (Supervised) attempts a broader driving task. Tesla says it can follow a destination route, make turns, negotiate intersections and roundabouts, change lanes, and enter or leave highways. Tesla also describes it as intended for varied roads, including residential and city streets. That broader scope does not turn the car into an autonomous vehicle. It remains a supervised assistance system, and the driver remains responsible for safe operation.

Autopilot and FSD (Supervised) compared
| Capability or question | Autopilot functions | FSD (Supervised) |
|---|---|---|
| Primary task | Traffic-Aware Cruise Control maintains speed and following distance. Autosteer keeps the vehicle in its lane while maintaining speed and distance. | Attempts to follow a route through turns, intersections, roundabouts, lane changes and highway entry or exit. |
| Typical road context | Autosteer and related highway-navigation functions are described for roads with clear lane markings; check the vehicle-specific manual. | Tesla says it is intended for varied situations, including residential and city streets, as well as highways. |
| Route following | Basic Autopilot does not by itself represent a complete destination-to-destination driving task. | Uses a destination route and attempts the turns and road transitions needed to follow it. |
| Lane changes | Auto Lane Change or Navigate on Autosteer may be available on some vehicles, but these are separate functions rather than a guarantee of every Autopilot-equipped Tesla. | Attempts lane changes as part of route following when the vehicle, region and software support the feature. |
| Intersections and roundabouts | Not part of the core Traffic-Aware Cruise Control and Autosteer description. | Attempts to negotiate intersections and roundabouts, with driver intervention required whenever the maneuver is unsafe or incorrect. |
| Traffic lights and stop signs | Traffic-light and stop-sign control may be available on select vehicles and configurations. | On eligible vehicles, the supervised system can use detected traffic lights, stop signs and road markings while following a route. |
| Parking and low-speed functions | Autopark and Summon may be available on select vehicles. | Additional parking functions and, on eligible vehicles, Summon can be available; exact equipment must be checked. |
| Driver’s role | Stay attentive, supervise the system and be ready to act immediately. | Remain fully attentive and ready to take over at any time. It is not autonomous. |
| Eligibility | Vehicle, region, hardware, model year, configuration, trim and software affect availability. | The same factors affect availability. Tesla says a current software update is required before FSD (Supervised) features become available. |
| Access and price | Depends on what is included with the vehicle and its software configuration. | Tesla’s US support page currently lists a $99 USD monthly subscription; terms and local availability can change. |
The word “Autopilot” should therefore be treated as a family name, not a promise that every listed feature is installed. Tesla directs owners to the vehicle’s own equipment information and Owner’s Manual for the authoritative feature list.
What Tesla Autopilot does
Traffic-Aware Cruise Control
Traffic-Aware Cruise Control controls the vehicle’s speed and following distance in relation to traffic ahead. It is a longitudinal aid: it can slow or accelerate within its operating conditions, but it does not, by that description alone, steer the car through a route.
Because speed and distance control are only part of driving, the driver must continue monitoring the lane, surrounding traffic, signs and road conditions. A clear view of the road does not remove the need to supervise.

Autosteer
Autosteer adds lane-centering steering while maintaining speed and following distance. Tesla’s manuals describe it in the context of roads with identifiable lane markings, and the exact operating conditions depend on the vehicle. It should be understood as assistance with staying in a lane, not as permission to stop watching the road or as a promise that the lane will always be recognized correctly.
Road geometry, worn markings, obstacles and changing traffic can all require the driver to take over. Tesla’s Model 3 manual specifically warns that intervention may be required on narrow roads with oncoming cars, in construction zones and through complex intersections: Model 3 Owner’s Manual, FSD (Supervised) limitations.

Functions that may be sold or enabled separately
Some Teslas can have more than the basic speed, distance and lane-keeping functions. Depending on vehicle and software, Tesla lists Auto Lane Change, Navigate on Autosteer, Autopark, Summon, and traffic-light or stop-sign control as potentially available functions. Their presence is not established merely by the word “Autopilot” in a vehicle description.
To see what a particular car actually has, use the vehicle touchscreen’s software and feature information and consult the manual for that exact model, region and configuration. Tesla’s general descriptions are available in its Model S Owner’s Manual, About Self-Driving and the Model 3 Owner’s Manual, About Self-Driving.

Destination-to-destination attempts
FSD (Supervised) is designed to attempt more of the driving sequence after a destination is entered. Tesla says it can follow a route through turns, intersections and roundabouts, make lane changes, and enter or exit highways. The system may therefore be useful on a trip that combines ordinary streets with freeway transitions, rather than only on a marked highway.
“Attempts” is important. The system can choose an incorrect lane, hesitate, make an unexpected maneuver or fail to handle a situation. The driver must watch the path and intervene before a mistake becomes dangerous.
City and residential roads
Tesla describes FSD (Supervised) as intended for varied roads, including city and residential streets. That is a broader stated road context than the lane-marking-focused description commonly associated with Autosteer. It does not mean every street is supported, nor that a route will be completed without assistance. Narrow lanes, parked vehicles, unusual intersections and changing road layouts can all exceed what the system handles reliably.

Intersections, roundabouts and highway transitions
FSD (Supervised) can attempt maneuvers that basic Autopilot does not define as its core task: turning across an intersection, navigating a roundabout, merging onto a highway and taking an exit. These are precisely the situations where a driver must be prepared to cancel the maneuver or steer and brake manually. High-speed cross traffic, simultaneous lane changes and complex junctions are among the examples Tesla identifies as requiring possible intervention.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTraffic controls and parking
On eligible vehicles, FSD (Supervised) relies on cameras to detect traffic lights, stop signs and road markings. Parking-related functions may also be available, and Summon can be offered on some configurations. These are not universal FSD entitlements: hardware, region, model year, software and configuration determine what appears in the vehicle.
Neither system is autonomous
Tesla’s support page states: “None of these advanced driver assistance features make your Tesla vehicle fully autonomous or replace you as the driver.” Read that as an operating requirement, not a legal disclaimer to ignore. You must keep your attention on the road, monitor what the car is doing and be able to take control immediately.
Driver monitoring does not make inattention safe. Tesla says monitoring may not operate perfectly, and the absence of an alert does not prove that the driver is paying attention. Keep your hands, eyes and judgment available for the road rather than treating alerts as the system’s definition of safe attention.
Where intervention is most likely
Road geometry and traffic interactions
- Unprotected turns where cross traffic is moving quickly.
- Multi-lane turns, complex intersections and roundabouts with ambiguous lane paths.
- Simultaneous lane changes or high-speed merges.
- Narrow roads with oncoming traffic, double-parked vehicles or little clearance.
- Construction zones, temporary lanes, road debris and other changes that do not match the normal roadway.
- High-curvature roads where the intended path is difficult to infer.
Tesla’s Model 3 manual summarizes the risk directly: “Driver intervention may be required in certain situations, such as on narrow roads with oncoming cars, in construction zones, or while going through complex intersections.”

Visibility, markings and camera condition
Rain, snow, fog and direct sun can significantly degrade performance. Faded, missing or confusing lane markings make it harder for the vehicle to determine its path. Tesla’s Model S manual explains that FSD (Supervised) depends on cameras detecting traffic lights, stop signs and road markings; dirty or obstructed cameras, poor weather and faded markings can reduce performance or make the feature unavailable. Keep the cameras clean and unobstructed. A rear-mounted rack or trailer can block a camera and interfere with operation.
These conditions can look manageable to a human while still causing the assistance system to behave unexpectedly. Do not wait for an alert before slowing down or disengaging if the scene is unclear. The relevant camera and operating guidance appears in Tesla’s Model S Owner’s Manual, FSD (Supervised) and its Model 3 limitations section.
Unexpected behavior
Tesla warns that unexpected maneuvers or errors can occur even when conditions appear straightforward. A driver should be ready to cancel the feature, steer around an obstacle, apply the brake or take full control. Treat a smooth previous trip as no guarantee about the next road, weather condition or software behavior.

FSD (Supervised) subscription and changing terms
Tesla’s US support page currently lists FSD (Supervised) at $99 USD per month as a subscription. The same page says it is not available for outright purchase there. Tesla says a subscriber can cancel, with access continuing through the current billing period, and that subscription refunds are unavailable.
Tesla also says its FSD transfer program ended on March 31, 2026. These are changeable commercial terms, and the US price does not establish the price or availability in another country. Check the current Tesla support page and the terms shown for your vehicle before subscribing. The official page is Tesla Full Self-Driving (Supervised) support.
How to interpret Tesla’s safety figures
Tesla’s support page reports “7x fewer major and minor collisions” and “5x fewer off-highway collisions” for vehicles with FSD (Supervised) engaged, attributing both statements to its Vehicle Safety Report. The page does not state a publication year for those figures and does not provide enough comparison methodology to independently evaluate them.
Accordingly, treat both numbers as Tesla-reported claims, not as universal measured results for every driver, road, Tesla model or weather condition. They do not remove the supervision requirement or prove that FSD (Supervised) is safer in a particular trip. The relevant source and its qualifications are on Tesla’s official FSD (Supervised) support page.
Which system fits a particular use?
Choose basic Autopilot functions when you mainly want speed, distance and lane assistance
If your need is to hold a set speed, maintain a following gap and help keep the car centered in a marked lane, the core Autopilot functions address that narrower task. Confirm that your vehicle has Traffic-Aware Cruise Control and Autosteer and learn their exact conditions from the manual. Optional lane-change, parking or traffic-control features should be verified separately.
Consider FSD (Supervised) when route-level assistance is valuable
FSD (Supervised) is aimed at drivers who want the car to attempt more of a planned trip: city streets, residential roads, turns, intersections, roundabouts, lane changes and highway transitions. The trade-off is not just the subscription price. You must supervise a more complex set of decisions, intervene when the route choice or maneuver is wrong, and accept that availability depends on the vehicle and region.
Do not choose either system as a substitute for driving
If you cannot remain attentive, cannot take over instantly, or are driving in conditions where cameras and markings are compromised, do not engage the assistance feature. Neither system is a chauffeur, and neither system’s name guarantees a safe outcome on a particular road.

A practical pre-drive checklist
- Confirm the exact feature and software version shown on the touchscreen.
- Read the Owner’s Manual section for your model, region and configuration.
- Clean the camera areas and remove anything that obstructs them.
- Check weather, glare, lane markings, construction and traffic complexity before engaging assistance.
- Keep your attention on the road and maintain a clear path to the steering wheel and pedals.
- Be ready to disengage for a difficult turn, merge, intersection, obstacle or unexpected maneuver.
Bottom line
Autopilot is primarily speed, following-distance and lane-keeping assistance, with other functions available only on some vehicles. FSD (Supervised) attempts a broader route-following job across city streets, residential roads and highways, but it remains camera- and software-dependent driver assistance. The meaningful difference is what each system attempts—not whether either one can drive without you. Verify the equipment and current terms for your Tesla, keep the cameras clear, and supervise every mile.
