Tesla also reported a 49% increase in research and development expense, citing higher AI and other program costs. Those figures show the cost of the company’s investment push; they do not establish that its AI initiatives will generate future profits.
What did Tesla report, and when?
Tesla released its Q2 2026 results on July 22, 2026. As of October 5, 2026, Q2 is the latest reported quarter; the company’s investor-relations calendar lists its Q3 earnings for October 21, 2026, a future date. Did Tesla’s profits rise or fall?
It depends which measure you mean. Revenue expanded, but both operating income and net income attributable to common stockholders were lower than a year earlier. Revenue growth alone therefore does not show that profitability improved.

All figures and comparisons in the table are Tesla-reported results for the three months ended June 30 in each year, from the company’s Q2 2026 Form 10-Q. The filing’s income statement shows operating expenses increased alongside the fall in operating income. The gap between revenue growth and income results is why the quarter should not be described simply as a profit increase.
How much is Tesla spending on AI?
Tesla reported $2.371 billion in research and development expense for Q2 2026, up 49% year over year. The company said the increase was primarily due to higher AI and other program costs and stock-based compensation. The filing does not separate AI spending into a standalone dollar total, so R&D expense should not be presented as an exact AI budget.

Tesla also said it expected 2026 capital expenditures to exceed $25 billion. This is management’s outlook, not a reported amount already spent. Tesla said the planned spending was driven in part by AI compute infrastructure and data centers, as well as production and R&D facilities and its fleet of company-operated AI-enabled assets. The filing describes R&D investment as weighing on profitability during this phase; that is the company’s explanation of its strategy, not proof the investments will pay off.
What does Tesla mean by AI?
Tesla describes its AI effort through several products and development areas rather than one separate business line. In its Q2 2026 Form 10-Q, the company says: “We are focused on bringing artificial intelligence into the real world, through products and services like FSD (Supervised) and Robotaxi, as well as working to develop and commercialize AI robots (including Optimus).”

- FSD (Supervised): a product Tesla names as part of its AI effort.
- Robotaxi: a service Tesla also identifies as part of that effort.
- Optimus and other AI robots: development and commercialization work the company says it is pursuing.
The filing identifies these as strategic areas, but does not establish that they are already a major source of profit. Tesla’s stated ambition and current financial contribution are different questions; the Q2 figures do not quantify profits from these initiatives.

The materials establish his executive role, but do not provide a verified, specific forecast or earnings-call statement from him. The reported earnings and the company’s written outlook can be assessed without attributing an unsupported claim to Musk.
