Rivian says Universal Hands-Free (UHF) supports hands-off, eyes-on driving on roads with painted or dotted lane lines. The driver must still watch the road, make driving decisions and be ready to take control; UHF is not self-driving, and Rivian says it will not stop or slow down for traffic lights or stop signs.
What is Rivian Universal Hands-Free?
Universal Hands-Free is a Rivian driver-assistance feature that lets a driver take their hands off the steering wheel when the system is available, while keeping their eyes on the road. Rivian says it works wherever there is a painted or dotted lane line. That description is not a guarantee that every road, lane marking or trip is supported.
Rivian said on April 16, 2026, that UHF covers more than 3.5 million road miles in the United States and Canada. That is Rivian’s stated coverage, not an independently audited route-by-route map. The company’s April 2026 overview describes the feature and its claimed reach.
Which Rivian vehicles have Universal Hands-Free?
Rivian says UHF first reached R1 Gen 2 customers through an over-the-air software update in December 2025. The company’s 2025 annual report says the rollout expanded its stated hands-free availability from fewer than 150,000 road miles to more than 3.5 million in North America.

Those sources establish the initial R1 Gen 2 rollout, but do not provide a complete model-year-by-model-year eligibility list. Check the vehicle’s software and feature information in Rivian’s Autonomy+ page, release notes and Owner’s Guide rather than assuming that all R1 vehicles qualify.
What does Universal Hands-Free not do?
UHF does not relieve the driver of responsibility. Rivian says its driver-assistance features support the driver but do not replace judgment, attention or control. Stay attentive and prepared to resume control whenever needed.

- Traffic lights and stop signs: Rivian explicitly says UHF will not stop or slow down for them. The driver must respond.
- Lane changes: Lane Change on Command is a separate Autonomy+ feature. Rivian says it requires UHF to be engaged, the driver to confirm the target lane is clear and the turn signal to be activated. Rivian’s April 2026 story says commanded lane changes operate only on divided highways.
- Road coverage: The mileage claim does not establish that every road or marking condition is supported. Rivian points owners to vehicle-specific information for details.
How much does Rivian Autonomy+ cost?
As accessed October 5, 2026, Rivian’s Autonomy+ page lists these terms:

Rivian says one-time purchase access lasts for the lifetime of feature support for the vehicle’s delivery hardware and transfers with the vehicle. Prices, trial eligibility and terms can change, so check the live Autonomy+ page and confirm what applies to the specific vehicle. The annual report’s earlier expectation that a fee would begin in April 2026 is historical; the current listed offer is the one above.

What features does Rivian say are coming next?
Rivian’s Q2 2026 earnings presentation lists the following roadmap targets. They are targets, not confirmed launch dates; Rivian cautions that they depend on assumptions and factors outside its control and may change.
