Tesla no longer included its basic Autopilot package as standard on new U.S. vehicles, according to a January 23, 2026 report by TechCrunch. The configuration described in that report kept Traffic Aware Cruise Control standard but removed Autosteer—the lane-centering feature—from the standard package. Tesla’s FSD (Supervised) subscription was listed at $99 per month in the United States when Tesla’s support page was checked October 8, 2026. The timing coincided with safety criticism and a California regulatory action, but the available reporting does not prove criticism alone caused the product change.
What Tesla changed
In its January 23, 2026 report, TechCrunch described Tesla’s basic Autopilot as two driver-assistance features: Traffic Aware Cruise Control and Autosteer. Traffic Aware Cruise Control maintains a selected speed and following distance; Autosteer centers the vehicle in its lane and steers through curves. The report said Tesla’s online U.S. vehicle configuration then listed only Traffic Aware Cruise Control as standard.
That means the reported change was not the removal of all cruise control. It was the removal of Autosteer from the standard Autopilot package on new U.S. vehicles. The report did not establish whether existing owners’ access changed, so it should not be read as evidence that Tesla took Autopilot away from current customers.
The report is a snapshot of U.S. ordering in January 2026, not a guarantee for every later build or every Tesla market. Availability can depend on model, trim, hardware, and location; check the current configuration for the specific vehicle before relying on a feature being included.

What buyers can get instead
Tesla’s support page lists FSD (Supervised) at $99 USD per month in the United States and says it is available by subscription rather than outright purchase. Tesla notes that pricing and feature availability may change. The figure is therefore a current listed U.S. subscription price, not a permanent price or a universal rate. See Tesla’s FSD subscription information for current terms.
FSD (Supervised) is not an autonomous-driving service. Tesla says enabled features vary by vehicle configuration and location, and the driver must remain fully attentive and ready to take over at any time. Before subscribing, verify which features are enabled for your vehicle and location, whether the subscription can be canceled under the terms shown to you, and whether the specific lane-centering capability you want is included.

Why the Autopilot name was under scrutiny
On December 16, 2025, the California Department of Motor Vehicles said it adopted an administrative law judge’s finding that Tesla’s use of “Autopilot” to describe driver-assistance features was misleading under California law. The DMV said the case concerned marketing that implied vehicles had or could have autonomous-driving capability. Its account cited marketing dating to May 2021, including the statement: “The system is designed to be able to conduct short and long-distance trips with no action required by the person in the driver’s seat.” The DMV said vehicles with the features at issue could not then, and cannot now, operate as autonomous vehicles. The agency’s decision and description are available in its announcement of the decision and case details.
The DMV initially ordered a 30-day suspension of Tesla’s manufacturer and dealer licenses, then modified the penalty. It permanently stayed the manufacturer-license suspension and gave Tesla 60 days to act on its use of Autopilot. The agency said Tesla stopped using the term in California vehicle marketing and thereby avoided a 30-day license suspension. This was a California action concerning the marketing at issue, not a nationwide ruling about every use of the word or a finding that all Tesla driver-assistance systems are autonomous.

The California finding is an official example of criticism tied directly to Tesla’s Autopilot name and marketing. There has also been separate litigation over the technology: the Associated Press reported that a Miami jury in August 2025 found Tesla partly responsible for a fatal 2019 crash involving Autopilot and awarded $243 million in total compensatory and punitive damages. Tesla said it would appeal; the cited report does not establish an appeal outcome or that this amount was ultimately paid. The jury case and California’s marketing decision are distinct matters.

TechCrunch connected the timing of the configuration change with Tesla’s effort to increase adoption of FSD (Supervised) and the California DMV requirement to stop using “Autopilot” in California vehicle marketing. Those are relevant context, but the cited sources do not establish a single exclusive cause. It is accurate to say the change followed regulatory action and came amid safety criticism and a paid-subscription push; it is not established that public criticism alone caused Tesla to drop standard Autopilot.
