Tesla Dog Mode keeps climate control running while a parked vehicle is in Park, displays the cabin temperature on the center touchscreen, and can send climate alerts through the Tesla app. It is not a guarantee that the cabin will remain safe: Tesla tells owners to stay nearby, monitor their pet and the cabin, and avoid relying on the feature if climate control is not working as expected.
What is Tesla Dog Mode?
Dog Mode is a pet-focused climate setting for a Tesla that is parked in Park. While it is active, the touchscreen shows the cabin temperature so a passerby can see that climate control is on. The Tesla app can also provide alerts about significant temperature changes or if climate control turns off. These details are documented in the Model Y Owner’s Manual.
Menu names and feature availability can vary by model, market, and software version. For example, the researched Model 3 manual calls the setting Pet Mode. Check the current owner’s manual for your specific vehicle rather than assuming its label or controls match another Tesla.
How do I turn on Dog Mode?
From the vehicle
- Make sure the vehicle is not in Low Power Mode and shift into Park.
- Adjust the climate settings if needed.
- On the climate controls screen, select Dog. Tesla’s Model Y manual documents this path; your vehicle may use a different label or menu.
These steps follow Tesla’s Model Y Owner’s Manual. The matching Model 3 manual uses “Pet Mode.”

Tesla says Dog Mode can also be controlled from the Climate screen in the mobile app. Turning climate control off through the app stops Dog Mode, according to the Model Y manual.
Can I monitor my dog in Tesla Dog Mode?
You can monitor some conditions, but the app is not a substitute for checking on your pet. The vehicle screen displays the current cabin temperature. The app can notify you of significant temperature changes and alert you if climate control turns off, including if charge falls below 20% or the vehicle detects a climate-system issue. App monitoring requires cellular connectivity for both your phone and the vehicle, Tesla says in its Model Y Owner’s Manual.

If cellular service is unavailable or unreliable, those remote notifications may not reach you. Stay close enough to return promptly and check the pet and cabin frequently rather than relying on the app alone.
Is Tesla Dog Mode safe?
Dog Mode can keep climate control operating, but it cannot guarantee a safe cabin or protect a pet in every circumstance. Tesla places responsibility for the pet on the owner and instructs owners to monitor cabin temperature and the pet’s well-being, remain nearby, and avoid leaving a pet in the vehicle for a long period. Tesla’s warning is direct: “Never rely on your vehicle to protect something irreplaceable.” See the Model Y Owner’s Manual.

When not to rely on Dog Mode
- Low battery: Tesla says Dog Mode may stop if battery charge drops below 20%. Do not start with low charge or assume the vehicle will continue climate control until you return.
- Climate-system trouble: The mode may stop if the vehicle detects an issue. Tesla advises against relying on it if the climate system needs service or is not operating as expected.
- Remote-control changes: Turning climate off in the app stops Dog Mode.
- Unreliable connectivity: Phone and vehicle cellular coverage are needed for app monitoring.
- Local restrictions: Laws vary by location. Tesla says: “Check local laws for any restrictions on leaving pets unattended in your vehicle.”
These operating limits and warnings are in Tesla’s Model Y Owner’s Manual. If conditions change, return to the vehicle and remove your pet if needed.

- Keep Climate On: Keeps the climate system operating after the vehicle is parked, but it does not provide Dog Mode’s pet-facing temperature display and associated app alerts.
- Camp Mode: Maintains cabin climate for occupants staying in the vehicle; it is not the pet-specific setting described in Tesla’s manual.
- Cabin Overheat Protection: Intended to limit cabin heat in hot conditions after parking, not to maintain a pet’s comfort or provide Dog Mode monitoring. Tesla says it may operate for up to 12 hours or until battery energy falls below the Low Power Mode threshold, whichever comes first, and it uses battery energy. Automatic shutoff, extreme outside temperatures, or other limitations can still allow dangerously high cabin temperatures. Tesla specifies an air-conditioning threshold of 105°F (40°C) unless a selected temperature applies; these are operating specifications, not safety guarantees.
