Yes. Tesla reported 1.64 million deliveries in 2025, a 9% decline from 2024. The Associated Press reported that BYD sold 2.26 million vehicles that year, more than Tesla in the comparison reported by AP. These are the figures as reported for 2025; the comparison should not be confused with Tesla’s narrower measure of deliveries or treated as a like-for-like breakdown of every vehicle category. Why did Tesla deliveries fall?
No single cause is established as responsible for a measurable share of the 2024 decline. The Associated Press reported several factors and analyst interpretations, which provide context rather than a quantified breakdown.
- Slower EV-market growth: Demand for electric vehicles slowed in the United States and elsewhere, according to AP. The U.S. market was still growing: Motor Intelligence figures cited by AP put U.S. EV sales at about 936,000 through September 2024, up 7.2%. That is a first-nine-month U.S. figure, not a full-year or global measure, so it does not contradict Tesla’s full-year global decline.
- More competition: Tesla faced competition from both established automakers and newer EV makers.
- Product and buyer concerns: Analysts cited by AP characterized Tesla’s lineup as aging or nearing market saturation. They also pointed to mainstream buyers’ concerns about vehicle range, prices and charging access. Morningstar analyst Seth Goldstein said the slight decline highlighted that the lineup was nearing market saturation. Global Data’s Jeff Schuster said continued growth would require Tesla to expand into other sizes and price points.
- Discounting: AP reported that early-year weakness led Tesla to offer discounts, putting pressure on margins. This is a reported business consequence, not proof that discounts caused a particular portion of the delivery decline.
- Political reaction: AP quoted analysts who suggested Elon Musk’s political activity could alienate some prospective buyers. That is an attributed interpretation, not a Tesla-reported finding or a measured explanation of the decline.
These factors should not be collapsed into a single explanation. The available reporting does not assign a specific percentage of lost deliveries to market growth, competition, the product lineup, pricing or buyer reaction.

What Tesla said about its 2025 automotive revenue
Tesla’s 2025 Form 10-K, filed in 2026, reported that automotive sales revenue decreased by $6.66 billion, or 9%, compared with 2024. Tesla attributed the decrease to approximately 8% fewer cash deliveries and a lower average selling price associated with sales mix and higher customer incentives. Revenue is not the same measure as deliveries: the revenue decrease cannot be read as an additional delivery statistic or used interchangeably with the 9% fall in vehicle deliveries. The filing also said regulatory credit revenue fell 28%, partly amid governmental and regulatory actions restricting certain credit programs. That is a separate revenue item, not a count of vehicles sold or delivered.
