Tesla’s lower-priced Model Y Standard and Model 3 Standard arrived in the U.S. on October 7, 2025. They are not new vehicle platforms or the long-discussed $25,000 Tesla; they are less-expensively equipped, rear-wheel-drive versions of Tesla’s existing electric cars.
The launch prices were $39,990 for the Model Y Standard and $36,990 for the Model 3 Standard, before destination, order fees, taxes and other applicable charges. With destination and order fees included, the advertised totals were $41,630 and $38,630, respectively.
Launch prices for the Tesla Model Y Standard and Model 3 Standard
| Vehicle | Starting price | Price with destination and order fees | Drive |
|---|---|---|---|
| Model 3 Standard | $36,990 | $38,630 | Rear-wheel drive |
| Model Y Standard | $39,990 | $41,630 | Rear-wheel drive |
The Model 3 Standard undercut the Model 3 Premium rear-wheel-drive version by $5,500 at launch. The Model Y Standard was $5,000 less than the Model Y Premium rear-wheel-drive version.
Those figures are launch prices, not guaranteed current transaction prices. Tesla states that vehicle prices can change, and the order page separates the advertised vehicle price from taxes and other fees. Buyers should check the live Tesla configurator for the price in their state before treating either number as an out-the-door cost.

What both Standard models include
Both cars use a new battery pack and powertrain designed around energy and production-cost efficiency. Tesla says each has more than 300 miles of EPA-estimated range, rear-wheel drive and a 15.4-inch center touchscreen.
Standard equipment also includes active-safety features, heated front seats and a heated steering wheel. The lower price does not mean either car is a stripped-out first-generation EV: both retain Tesla’s core touchscreen interface, driver-assistance systems and access to the Supercharger network.
The savings come mainly from removing or downgrading comfort, audio and interior features rather than from using a completely different body or chassis.
Tesla Model Y Standard specifications

|---|---|

| EPA-estimated range | 321 miles |

| Maximum Supercharging rate | 225 kW |
| Advertised charging gain | Up to 160 miles in 15 minutes |
The Model Y Standard’s 321-mile EPA estimate is competitive with the other Standard car, although its crossover shape makes it the more practical choice for buyers who need additional cargo height and a larger hatchback opening.

Tesla Model 3 Standard specifications
| Specification | Model 3 Standard | Model 3 Premium RWD |
|---|---|---|
| Starting price at launch | $36,990 | $42,490 |
| EPA-estimated range | 321 miles | 363 miles |
| 0–60 mph | 5.8 seconds | 4.9 seconds |
| Drive | Rear-wheel drive | Rear-wheel drive |
The Standard Model 3 is the less expensive and slower version, but 5.8 seconds to 60 mph is still quick by ordinary-car standards. The Premium model’s advantages are its additional range and stronger acceleration, along with more equipment.
What Tesla removed to lower the price
The Standard trims are cheaper because Tesla reduced their content. Confirmed changes include:
- Cloth upholstery: the Standard cars use cloth rather than Tesla’s usual faux-leather-style interior material.
- Simpler audio: the system has seven speakers instead of 15.
- No rear touchscreen: rear passengers do not get the additional display available in better-equipped versions.
- Model Y roof: the Model Y Standard does not have the panoramic glass roof.
- Model Y exterior lighting: its connecting light bar between the headlights is shorter.
- Model 3 lighting and performance: the Model 3 Standard loses ambient lighting and has less range and acceleration than the Model 3 Premium.
The missing features are most noticeable to buyers comparing cabins rather than EPA range. A shopper who cares about a glass roof, rear-seat entertainment, premium audio or a more upscale interior may find that the price gap does not tell the whole ownership story.

Are these Tesla’s $25,000 cars?
No. The Model Y Standard and Model 3 Standard are not the previously discussed $25,000 “Model 2.” They are lower-content versions of the Model Y and Model 3, using the existing vehicle designs and Tesla’s familiar format.
That distinction matters because the launch prices remain well above $25,000 before fees. Even the cheaper Model 3 Standard is nearly $39,000 once Tesla’s listed destination and order fees are added, before taxes, registration and any financing costs.
The federal tax-credit issue changes the comparison
The Standard models launched shortly after the $7,500 federal EV tax credit expired at the end of September 2025. As a result, their advertised prices should not be compared directly with earlier Tesla prices that qualifying customers could reduce through the credit.
For example, a vehicle advertised at $36,990 after the credit had expired was not necessarily cheaper to purchase than an earlier Tesla whose effective price was reduced by a $7,500 incentive. Eligibility rules, state incentives and the timing of delivery also affected the final result.

Which Standard Tesla makes more sense?
- Choose the Model 3 Standard for the lower entry price. It costs $3,000 less than the Model Y Standard and is quicker to 60 mph. Its sedan body is the better fit for buyers who do not need a tall cargo area.
- Choose the Model Y Standard for crossover practicality. The Model Y offers a taller hatchback layout and five-seat utility while matching the Model 3 Standard’s 321-mile EPA range.
- Compare the Premium versions before ordering. The $5,000–$5,500 upgrade may be worthwhile if you want more range, faster acceleration, better audio or the missing interior features.
- Calculate the real purchase price. Add destination and order fees, taxes, registration, charging equipment and financing costs. Do not base the decision only on Tesla’s headline starting price.
What to verify on Tesla’s order page
Tesla frequently changes prices, equipment, trim names, financing promotions and estimated delivery dates. Before placing an order, check:
- the vehicle price and destination or order fees;
- available wheels, paint and interior choices;
- the current EPA range and charging information;
- delivery timing for your ZIP code;
- financing rates and promotional terms;
- state or local EV incentives that may still apply.
Those details can change independently of the model name, so a launch article or an old inventory listing is not a substitute for the live configurator.

What is the range of the Standard Model 3 and Model Y?
Both Standard versions have an EPA-estimated range of 321 miles. Actual range varies with weather, speed, temperature, wheels, payload and driving conditions.
Are the Tesla Standard models the $25,000 Model 2?
No. They are lower-content, rear-wheel-drive versions of the existing Model 3 and Model Y. They are not a separate $25,000 vehicle platform.
The Bottom Line
The Model 3 Standard and Model Y Standard give Tesla a lower-priced entry point, but the discount comes with meaningful equipment cuts. The Model 3 starts at $36,990 and the Model Y at $39,990 before fees, with both offering a 321-mile EPA estimate and rear-wheel drive. Buyers should compare the missing features and the Premium trims—not just the sticker price—before deciding whether the savings are worthwhile.
