Tesla Cybertruck’s Full Self-Driving Dream Is Starting to Come True—With One Big Catch

Tesla’s Cybertruck FSD can attempt complete routes involving turns, intersections, roundabouts, and highways—but the driver must remain attentive and ready to take over. Here’s what the progress really means.

Tesla’s Cybertruck is no longer just a vehicle waiting for a promised autonomous-driving future. Tesla currently lists the truck with Full Self-Driving (Supervised), and its owner’s manual describes a system that can attempt an entire trip across residential and city streets—following curves, negotiating intersections, making turns, handling roundabouts, and entering or exiting highways.

That is meaningful progress toward Tesla’s long-running autonomy vision. It is not, however, proof that the Cybertruck can drive itself without a responsible human. The word “Supervised” is the crucial qualification: the driver must continuously monitor the road and remain ready to take over.

What Tesla’s Cybertruck FSD can now attempt

Tesla presents FSD (Supervised) as a broader driver-assistance suite rather than a conventional adaptive-cruise or lane-centering feature. When engaged, the system is intended to guide the Cybertruck to a destination while carrying out multiple parts of the drive.

According to Tesla’s Cybertruck owner’s manual, the system may attempt to:

  • Follow curves in the road
  • Stop at and negotiate intersections
  • Make left and right turns
  • Navigate roundabouts
  • Enter and exit highways
  • Operate on residential and city streets

The significance is not any single maneuver. Modern driver-assistance systems have long been able to help with isolated tasks such as maintaining speed or staying near the center of a lane. The larger change is that Cybertruck FSD is described as attempting to connect those tasks into a route-level driving experience.

In some circumstances, Tesla also documents starting FSD from Park. When the feature is enabled and available, and the vehicle detects a suitable driver, the Cybertruck may shift into Drive or Reverse, pull out of a parking space, and begin navigating toward a destination. That illustrates an expanding task scope, but it remains conditional on the driver, the vehicle, the software, and the system’s operating conditions.

The “Supervised” label changes the meaning completely

FSD (Supervised) does not mean that the Cybertruck is a driverless vehicle. Tesla’s instructions require the driver to watch the road, surroundings, and other road users at all times. The driver must also be prepared to intervene immediately whenever the system makes an inappropriate decision or encounters a situation it cannot handle reliably.

Tesla specifically warns that intervention may be needed on narrow roads, in construction zones, at complex intersections, and in other unpredictable situations. The driver should not assume that the Cybertruck will always stop, proceed, yield, or choose the correct path through an intersection.

The cabin camera monitors driver attentiveness. If the driver looks away or fails to respond to warnings, the alerts can escalate. Ignoring those warnings may cause FSD to disengage or become temporarily unavailable. Tesla also warns against inattentive use, including using a handheld device while the system is engaged.

In practical terms, the Cybertruck may perform more of the driving, but the human remains responsible for supervising that performance and resuming control. A driver cannot legally or practically treat the system as permission to look away, sleep, use a phone, or leave the vehicle unattended.

Why this is progress even though it is not autonomy

Calling the system “driver assistance” should not obscure what has changed. A Cybertruck that can attempt a complete route involving turns, intersections, roundabouts, and highways is doing considerably more than a truck equipped only with speed and lane-keeping support.

The progress is best understood as integration. Tesla is trying to make the vehicle’s perception, planning, steering, acceleration, and braking work together across a wider range of ordinary driving situations. That is closer to the experience people associate with autonomous driving than a feature that controls only one part of the trip.

But broader capability is not the same as guaranteed capability. Tesla’s descriptions establish what the system is designed or intended to attempt. They do not independently verify that it will complete every maneuver correctly, in every location, weather condition, traffic pattern, or software version. No independent performance testing is established by the materials reviewed for this article.

Where Cybertruck FSD fits in the SAE automation framework

The SAE J3016 automation framework helps separate marketing language from driver responsibility. Level 2 systems can provide steering and speed or braking assistance at the same time, but the human driver must supervise the system and remain responsible for the driving task.

That is the category most consistent with FSD (Supervised). The Cybertruck can perform more driving subtasks, but Tesla still requires an attentive driver who can take over. The available evidence does not support describing the feature as Level 3, Level 4, or Level 5 autonomy.

Claim What the evidence supports
Capability The Cybertruck can attempt a wider collection of driving actions and route navigation under supervision.
Autonomy The truck can drive without an attentive human.
Safety The system is safer in every situation or has solved autonomous driving.

The first statement is supported by Tesla’s current Cybertruck product information and owner’s manual. The second is contradicted by Tesla’s own supervision requirements. The third would require broader, independently verified safety evidence that the cited materials do not provide.

How the Cybertruck’s system works

Tesla says the Cybertruck uses cameras mounted at the front, rear, left, and right of the vehicle to build a model of its surroundings. An AI computer processes those camera inputs and uses neural networks to make decisions intended to guide the truck to its destination.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The system is also software-dependent. Tesla says its capabilities evolve through over-the-air updates. That creates an important trade-off:

  • Potential upside: the vehicle’s driving behavior can improve without a mechanical redesign.
  • Uncertainty: the same Cybertruck may behave differently after a software update.
  • Variation: capability can differ by software version, vehicle configuration, available hardware, market, and date of manufacture.

For that reason, a video or owner report from one Cybertruck should not be treated as representative of every truck. Any serious comparison or demonstration should identify the software version, geography, vehicle configuration, and date. Those details matter when a feature’s behavior can change through software.

The situations where driver attention matters most

Supervision is not a formality. The driver’s job becomes especially important when the road departs from familiar patterns or when other road users behave unpredictably.

Examples include:

  • Construction zones with temporary lanes, cones, workers, or altered signs
  • Narrow roads with limited clearance or unusual lane markings
  • Complex intersections with multiple turning lanes or ambiguous right-of-way
  • Roundabouts where lane selection and the behavior of other vehicles vary
  • Obstructed, dirty, damaged, or poorly positioned cameras
  • Situations in which the truck’s intended path is unclear or unsafe

The driver should be prepared to take over before a warning appears, rather than waiting for the system to announce that it is struggling. If the vehicle requests intervention, the driver must respond promptly. If the system disengages, the Cybertruck is no longer providing the same assistance and must be driven manually.

NHTSA scrutiny makes exaggerated claims especially unhelpful

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened investigation PE25012 on October 7, 2025, concerning alleged traffic-safety violations while Tesla’s FSD was engaged. The agency’s document describes the relevant system as an automation system that requires a fully attentive driver engaged in the driving task.

An open investigation is not a final finding that Cybertruck FSD is defective, unsafe, or legally liable for a violation. It does, however, provide an important reason to avoid presenting expanding capability as proof that autonomous driving has been solved.

Both points can be true at once: Tesla may be making substantial progress in the number of driving tasks its system can attempt, while regulators and drivers still need to evaluate how reliably and safely those tasks are performed in the real world.

What Cybertruck owners should check before relying on the feature

  1. Confirm availability. FSD (Supervised) must be enabled and available for the vehicle and location. Tesla’s feature availability can depend on software, hardware, market, and vehicle configuration.
  2. Read the current owner’s manual. The manual is the best source for the truck’s current operating requirements, warnings, and limitations.
  3. Keep the driver-monitoring system usable. The cabin camera and the driver’s ability to respond to alerts are part of the supervision model.
  4. Keep exterior cameras clear and unobstructed. Dirt, damage, weather, or an obstruction can affect the system’s ability to interpret its surroundings.
  5. Remain engaged throughout the drive. Do not use a phone, look away for extended periods, sleep, or assume that a route completed successfully before will always be completed successfully again.
  6. Take over whenever necessary. The driver—not the software—is responsible for deciding when the vehicle’s behavior is unsafe.

Outfitting the Cybertruck is separate from improving FSD

FSD capability comes from Tesla’s software, sensing hardware, and AI computer—not from floor coverings, screen protectors, cargo organizers, or exterior protection products. Accessories should never be marketed as upgrades to autonomous-driving performance.

If the new software makes you think about outfitting the truck itself, Tesla Cybertruck all-weather floor mats are a practical starting point. Tesla sells model-specific all-weather interior liners for the Cybertruck, which makes fit an important consideration when comparing alternatives. Check that any product is designed for the Cybertruck’s exact configuration and that it does not interfere with pedals, seat movement, sensors, or drainage.

Best Value

The same principle applies to bumper protection, glass-roof sunshades, covers, mud flaps, cargo dividers, and other Cybertruck-specific utility products. They can help with ownership concerns such as loading wear, interior dirt, weather exposure, and cargo organization, but they do not make FSD more capable.

Tesla warns that non-approved parts or modifications may affect vehicle performance, safety, or warranty coverage. Before installing an aftermarket accessory, verify compatibility, installation requirements, and whether it changes the fit or operation of any original equipment.

So, is Tesla’s Cybertruck FSD dream coming true?

Partly—and in a more limited sense than the name suggests. The Cybertruck is now positioned as a vehicle that can attempt a much more complete driving experience under supervision. Tesla’s own documentation describes route navigation involving ordinary streets, turns, intersections, roundabouts, and highways. That is a more credible demonstration of Tesla’s autonomy strategy than a promise that the feature will arrive someday.

But the central limitation has not disappeared. The driver must remain attentive, watch the road, respond to warnings, and be ready to take control at all times. Until that human responsibility is removed under a defined operating condition—and supported by the relevant technical and regulatory evidence—the Cybertruck is an advanced driver-assistance vehicle, not a driverless truck.

The fairest conclusion is therefore measured optimism: Tesla’s Cybertruck FSD dream is beginning to look more like an integrated driving system, but the dream of unsupervised autonomy remains unfinished.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Cybertruck FSD fully autonomous?

No. Tesla calls the feature Full Self-Driving (Supervised) and requires the driver to monitor the road and remain ready to take over. It should be treated as advanced driver assistance, not driverless or unsupervised autonomy.

What can Cybertruck FSD do?

Tesla describes FSD (Supervised) as capable of attempting tasks such as following curves, negotiating intersections, making turns, navigating roundabouts, and entering or exiting highways. Actual behavior can vary by software version, hardware, configuration, market, and conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do Cybertruck accessories improve Full Self-Driving?

No. Accessories such as floor liners, bumper protection, covers, and cargo organizers may make ownership more practical, but they do not improve FSD. Tesla also warns that non-approved parts or modifications may affect vehicle performance, safety, or warranty coverage.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Cybertruck FSD (Supervised) can now attempt a broader, route-level set of driving tasks, including turns, intersections, roundabouts, and highway navigation. That is real progress in driver assistance, but it is not Level 4 or Level 5 autonomy. The driver remains continuously responsible and must be ready to take over.
