NHTSA lists 46,096 Cybertrucks as potentially affected by Tesla recall 25V-170. That is the size of the recall population—not a count of panels that have detached, nor proof that every listed truck is defective. The official recall information does not state how many failures have occurred or provide a failure rate, so it cannot establish how many trucks are “likely defective.”
What the Cybertruck recall covers
NHTSA’s notice, dated March 19, 2025, identifies campaign 25V-170 and Tesla recall number SB-25-10-001. It covers certain 2024 and 2025 model-year Cybertrucks. Tesla gives the production window as November 13, 2023, through February 27, 2025. Check a truck by VIN rather than relying on model year or build dates alone.
The affected component is the stainless-steel cantrail assembly, an exterior trim panel. The panel may delaminate at its adhesive joint and separate from the vehicle. NHTSA warns that a detached panel can become a road hazard and increase crash risk. NHTSA’s campaign notice and Tesla’s recall information describe the condition and recall scope.
Does 46,096 mean all those trucks are defective?
No. The 46,096 figure is the number of vehicles potentially affected, not the number with confirmed defects or detached panels. The official information cited for this recall does not give a confirmed detachment count, a sampled failure rate, or an estimate of how many vehicles are expected to fail. It therefore does not support a defensible numeric answer to how many are likely defective.

The recall population says how broadly the issue may apply; it does not give an individual truck’s probability of failure. NHTSA describes its defect investigations as considering available information and the relative frequency and severity of possible safety defects. Warning signs and safety concern
Tesla says a delaminated cantrail panel may produce detectable noise inside the cabin before separating, and the panel may appear loose or visibly separating. These are possible signs, not evidence that every recalled truck will show them. A panel that comes off can pose a hazard to following motorists and increase the risk of a collision or injury.

If you notice unusual noise from the cantrail area or see a loose or separating panel, contact Tesla service promptly and ask about the recall repair. Do not treat an adhesive repair or replacement part from another source as the official remedy; Tesla’s stated remedy is replacement of the cantrail assembly.
How to check a specific Cybertruck
- Find the vehicle identification number (VIN) and enter it in NHTSA’s recall lookup or Tesla’s recall page.
- Check whether the cantrail recall appears as unrepaired. A model year or production-window match alone does not confirm the status of an individual vehicle.
- If the recall is open, contact Tesla service to confirm repair eligibility and scheduling in your region. If a repair has already been completed, verify the vehicle’s current record rather than assuming the recall remains outstanding.
Tesla’s repair remedy
Tesla says it will replace the cantrail assembly with one that meets durability testing requirements, at no charge. The company estimates the replacement work at approximately one hour; that is the repair-time estimate, not necessarily the total time an owner will spend at a service appointment. Tesla says it will contact affected owners to schedule service when parts are available in their region.
