Despite the original headline’s use of “crashes,” the reporting describes the truck arriving at the protest—not a traffic collision. Gizmodo later reported that the graffiti-like markings were removable vinyl, and that a Los Angeles customization shop described the vehicle’s use as a peaceful protest.
What happened at the Los Angeles protest?
Video recorded on Sunday, June 8, 2025, shows a black Cybertruck at the intersection of North Los Angeles Street and 1st Street during anti-ICE demonstrations. Storyful’s June 10 listing describes it rolling up to the intersection with a Mexican flag and visible anti-ICE and “city of workers” text; the footage is credited to Luke Chueh via Storyful. Gizmodo’s June 10 account also says the truck performed maneuvers at an intersection near protesters.

The visible combination made the vehicle hard to miss: anti-ICE and ACAB wording, a Mexican flag at the rear, and “en la ciudad de los trabajadores.” The Spanish phrase translates as “in the city of workers.” Storyful initially described the truck as “vandalized,” but Gizmodo’s later reporting identified the markings as removable vinyl rather than permanent damage.
What was the message on the truck?
The truck’s visible text connected it directly to the protest’s opposition to immigration enforcement. The Mexican flag and the phrase “in the city of workers” added further political and cultural cues, while ACAB is an anti-police slogan. The footage establishes what was displayed; it does not, by itself, explain who chose each message or what every person involved intended by it.

Was the Cybertruck vandalized?
Gizmodo reported that the graphics were removable vinyl applied to the vehicle, not permanent paint or damage. Its report identified the Instagram account posting close-up footage as belonging to Stars in the Ceiling, a Los Angeles auto-customization shop. The specific vinyl brand or product was not identified.
Stars in the Ceiling’s Instagram statement, as reproduced by Gizmodo, said: “This vehicle was used for a peaceful protest and an act of nonviolence. 2025 has been a crazy year! It’s time to wrap this Cybertruck with another color!” Gizmodo attributes that statement to the shop’s account, not to a named individual.

Why did the truck become an unlikely symbol?
The visual tension was central to the story: a Tesla Cybertruck, associated in the coverage with Elon Musk and his political positions, appeared at a protest against ICE and Trump administration policy. That contrast made the vehicle a conspicuous image and invited different interpretations, including sincere protest, cultural provocation or business promotion.
Those interpretations should not be confused with established facts. The shop described the use as a peaceful protest, but the available reporting does not conclusively establish the driver’s full intent or show that promotion was the shop’s primary motive. Gizmodo raised the possibility of business promotion; it did not prove that the appearance was a paid advertising stunt.
