The reported cause—water ingress—and the claim that the repair was outside the battery warranty come from the owners’ accounts in contemporary news coverage, not a published diagnostic report or Tesla statement.
What the couple said happened
Johnny Bacigalupo and Rob Hussey said their car stopped starting after they went out to dinner in rainy Edinburgh. Bacigalupo told Carscoops that Tesla service attributed the problem to water in the battery and said the weather in Scotland had been bad. He also said the couple were told the repair was not Tesla’s responsibility under warranty. Carscoops reported their account on October 16, 2023.
The couple’s account does not establish that ordinary rain physically damaged the battery. The contemporary stories reviewed do not include a diagnostic report, inspection findings or an independent assessment confirming the cause.
How much was the reported quote?
The reported quote was £17,374. Carscoops converted that amount to approximately US$21,200, while The Drive reported an approximate conversion of US$21,166. Those dollar figures were published in 2023; the original quote was in pounds, and the conversions are not current exchange-rate calculations.

The headline shorthand “$20,000” rounds the reported amount. It does not mean the couple paid that sum: the available coverage does not establish the final repair cost or what, if anything, they ultimately paid.
Was the repair covered by Tesla’s battery warranty?
Bacigalupo said the couple were told the repair was not covered by the eight-year battery warranty. The available reports do not include the applicable warranty document or a final written coverage decision, so they establish what the owners said they were told—not a general rule about Tesla warranty coverage or a verified decision in this case.

Which Tesla model was involved?
The reports conflict. Carscoops identifies the vehicle as a Model Y; The Drive calls it a Model 3; and Futurism says the original Edinburgh Live coverage did not specify the model. Without confirmation from the original local report or vehicle records, the model cannot be stated confidently.
What is known about the complaint’s outcome?
The Drive reported that Tesla customer relations registered the complaint for investigation, based on the couple’s account of an email. The email itself was not available in the reporting reviewed. Those stories do not establish whether Tesla completed a repair, changed its position on warranty coverage, or how the complaint was ultimately resolved. No directly attributable Tesla statement about this incident was reported.

Can rain damage an electric-car battery?
This story does not answer that technical question: it records the couple’s report of what Tesla service allegedly told them, but provides no diagnostic evidence to establish that rain caused the failure. It should not be read as proof that driving a Tesla in ordinary rain damages its traction battery.
