Tesla began a limited rollout of Full Self-Driving (FSD) v12.5.1 in late July 2024, reportedly bundled with vehicle software 2024.20.15. The first vehicles identified were Cybertrucks and Model Y vehicles equipped with Tesla’s HW4 computer. It was a staged software release—not a fleet-wide update and not a transition to autonomous driving.
The rollout was reported on July 28, 2024. Tesla’s current materials now refer to newer FSD Supervised software, so v12.5.1 should be understood as a historical release rather than an update owners should expect today.

What FSD v12.5.1 was
“2024.20.15” and “FSD v12.5.1” describe different software layers. The former is the reported Tesla vehicle-firmware build; the latter is the FSD driving-stack revision associated with it. Receiving 2024.20.15 did not necessarily mean that every vehicle had the same FSD functions enabled.

Which vehicles received the first rollout?
The initial distribution was selective. The report identified:
- Cybertruck: described as the first model in this rollout to receive the new feature set.
- HW4-equipped Model Y: an early focus for the release.
Tesla said or was reported to be expanding compatibility, but the available account does not establish that every eligible vehicle received the software, nor that all regions were updated at the same time. Tesla software is delivered in waves, so a vehicle that did not receive it immediately was not necessarily defective or permanently excluded.
What reportedly changed
A more unified city-and-highway system
Earlier FSD behavior could differ between urban streets and highway driving. V12.5.1 was presented as part of Tesla’s effort to combine those environments into a more unified driving policy. A common stack does not guarantee identical performance on every road or remove the need for supervision.

- REMOTE CONTROL: Full function RC operation lets you drive this miniature electric truck forward, backward, and steer with responsive controls
- LIGHTING FEATURES: Equipped with LED lights that illuminate while driving for enhanced realism and nighttime play
- AGE APPROPRIATE: Perfect for children 3 years and older, with easy-to-use controls and durable construction for lasting enjoyment
- SPECIFICATIONS: Battery-operated RC vehicle includes remote control unit, requires batteries (not included), sized for indoor and outdoor play
Lane changes
The rollout was associated with earlier and more natural lane-change behavior. The source did not provide independently measured intervention rates or a complete list of conditions in which the behavior changed.
Driver monitoring
Improved monitoring was also reported. That is a supervision aid, not a substitute for an attentive driver. Tesla’s current subscription documentation says repeated inattentiveness warnings can produce strikeouts and temporarily suspend FSD access.
Broader compatibility
Expanded vehicle compatibility was part of the reported roadmap, but availability still depended on model, trim, AI-computer generation, software version, region, regulatory approval and FSD entitlement.

Actually Smart Summon
“Actually Smart Summon” was linked to the broader v12.5.x rollout but should be treated separately from the on-road FSD stack. It is a low-speed, app-controlled vehicle-movement feature for parking environments; its presence does not mean the car can drive independently on public roads. Tesla describes the current function and its limitations on its FSD support page.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy hardware mattered
The initial Model Y focus was specifically on vehicles with HW4, Tesla’s newer AI-computer generation. That does not prove HW4 was universally mandatory for every vehicle running v12.5.1. Tesla states that features vary with vehicle model, model year, trim, hardware, software and region.
Older vehicles can have different upgrade paths. Tesla currently lists an AI-computer installation price of $1,000 plus applicable tax for certain eligible vehicles, but that is a current support-page price signal—not evidence of the price or policy during the 2024 rollout. See Tesla’s AI Computer page for present eligibility information.

- Made for Cybertruck: Turn the rear seat into a dedicated rest space. This Cybertruck back seat mattress is made for road trips, camping, overlanding, and overnight stops. Please note: the Cybertruck version is not compatible with the SnugNest Extension Pad.
- More Level, More Supported: Seat contours, angles, and the footwell gap can make it hard to lie comfortably. Integrated air support sections help bridge unsupported areas and reduce rear-seat tilt for a more balanced sleeping surface.
- Air-Foam Comfort: TPU air-foam combines cushioned foam with supportive air chambers for a steadier, more mattress-like feel than a basic inflatable pad.
- Built-In Pump: No separate pump needed. Inflate in about 70 seconds for quick, hassle-free setup whenever you stop to rest or camp.
- Packs Small for the Road: Deflate and store compactly when you need the rear seat back, keeping SnugNest easy to carry for your next trip.
How owners checked for the software
- Connect the vehicle to Wi-Fi where possible.
- Watch the touchscreen and Tesla app for an over-the-air update notification.
- Install the update when Tesla makes it available and follow the on-screen scheduling or installation prompts.
- After installation, open Controls > Software to review the vehicle build and available FSD software.
- Open Controls > Self-Driving to review current FSD settings and permissions.
Tesla controls staged distribution on its servers. Owners could not reliably force v12.5.1 onto an unsupported vehicle, and having an FSD-capable hardware package did not guarantee immediate delivery.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the update did not do
FSD v12.5.1 did not make a Tesla autonomous. Tesla’s current product name is Full Self-Driving (Supervised), and the company says the driver must remain attentive, responsible for the vehicle and ready to take over. Features can vary by region and configuration. The official safety language is at tesla.com/support/fsd.

Claims that the release would reduce driver interventions were expectations attributed to Tesla leadership, not an independently verified v12.5.1 measurement. No percentage reduction should be inferred from the rollout report.

How v12.5.1 fits today
As of August 2026, v12.5.1 is obsolete as a current software target. Tesla’s newer trial guidance discusses FSD v14 and v14.2 or later at its v14 trial page. Owners should not expect to subscribe specifically to v12.5.1 or treat a 2024 rollout report as a current availability promise.
Current ways to check FSD eligibility
Tesla’s present U.S. support materials list FSD Supervised at $99 per month, subject to change. Owners can check the Tesla app or vehicle controls for eligibility; Tesla’s subscription instructions are at this support page. Current availability varies by country, vehicle and hardware, and a subscription activates only features Tesla makes available for that configuration.
New-vehicle buyers may qualify for Tesla’s current 30-day FSD Supervised trial framework, with model and trim restrictions described at Tesla’s trial page. These current offers should not be backdated to July 2024.
