How many Outlander generations are there?
For the gasoline Outlander, Mitsubishi describes the 2021 North American redesign as the fourth generation. The count reflects the North American lineage described in Mitsubishi’s 2021 announcement; it should not be used to force identical generation boundaries onto every country.
The PHEV uses its own count. Mitsubishi’s plug-in hybrid began in 2013 and received a second-generation redesign in 2021, with sales rolling out by region through 2022. A PHEV generation number is therefore not interchangeable with the gasoline model’s number.

Generation 1: Airtrek and early Outlander lineage
2001 Japan launch as Airtrek
Mitsubishi says the first vehicle in the lineage was released in Japan in 2001 under the Airtrek name. Readers shopping for an early vehicle may therefore find Airtrek badges, Japanese-market references or import documentation rather than an Outlander model-year description.
2002 North American introduction
Mitsubishi identifies 2002 as the North American launch of the Outlander lineage. Because Japan and North America used different naming and launch milestones, a 2002 vehicle in one market should not automatically be treated as the same model-year specification sold elsewhere.
Generation 2: the Outlander name replaces Airtrek
October 2005 company-history milestone
Mitsubishi’s company history records an all-new Outlander launching in October 2005 to replace Airtrek as its mid-size SUV. This is the clearest date for the Outlander name transition in that corporate timeline, but it does not establish one worldwide start and end year for every market.

Why year-only identification can fail
Imported vehicles, late local launches and overlapping inventories can make a registration year different from the engineering generation. Confirm the vehicle’s country, VIN information, body style, engine and drivetrain before ordering parts or comparing equipment.
Generation 3: the pre-2021 gasoline Outlander and first PHEV era
Gasoline model
Mitsubishi’s cited material establishes the later 2021 redesign as the fourth North American generation, which places the preceding North American vehicle in the third-generation sequence. The available evidence here does not provide a complete, country-by-country model-year boundary or a full engine and trim matrix for that generation.
2013 Outlander PHEV
The Outlander PHEV debuted in Japan in 2013. It belongs to a parallel plug-in-hybrid sequence rather than being a separate gasoline-generation label. Equipment, battery specifications and availability varied by market, so a PHEV identification should always include country and model year.

Generation 4: 2021 North American redesign
Launch timing and configuration
Mitsubishi revealed the all-new fourth-generation gasoline Outlander in February 2021 and said North American sales would start in April 2021. For that North American launch, Mitsubishi described a 2.5-liter engine, available electronically controlled four-wheel drive with Super-All-Wheel Control, and a three-row, seven-seat cabin.
Those specifications belong to the cited North American launch vehicle. They should not be generalized to every country, trim or later refresh without checking the local specification sheet.
Second-generation PHEV rollout
Mitsubishi premiered a fully redesigned second-generation Outlander PHEV in 2021. The rollout was staggered: Japan in December 2021, Australia and New Zealand in the first half of 2022, and North America in the second half of 2022. The launch material describes twin-motor four-wheel drive and a seven-passenger layout for the PHEV model presented.

2024–2025 Outlander PHEV update
Mitsubishi announced an updated PHEV in Japan in October 2024 and planned European availability for spring 2025, with other markets to follow. In 2026, the company described the update as adding an enhanced drive battery, improved electric range and acceleration, revised interior and exterior quality, additional features and a Yamaha-developed audio system.
A Japanese announcement does not prove that every country received the same equipment or model year. Treat these as manufacturer-described update features and verify the local catalog before buying, servicing or comparing a vehicle.

How to identify the correct Outlander generation
- Start with the market. Record the country where the vehicle was sold new, not only the registration country.
- Separate Airtrek from Outlander. A 2001 Japan-market vehicle may be labeled Airtrek even though it is the starting point of the Outlander lineage.
- Record the model year and build date. Registration year alone may not identify the engineering update.
- Identify the powertrain. Mark the vehicle as gasoline or PHEV; the PHEV has a separate generation sequence.
- Check drivetrain and seating. Note two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, S-AWC where applicable, and the number of seating rows.
- Match trim and infotainment hardware. Mitsubishi’s own audio-compatibility listings divide vehicles by year and screen size, demonstrating why a generic “Outlander” label is insufficient.
- Use the VIN or local specification sheet before ordering parts. Year, market, engine, drivetrain, trim and PHEV status should all match.
What changed between Outlander generations?
The reliable comparison points are the market and launch date, gasoline versus PHEV powertrain, drivetrain, seating configuration, safety and infotainment equipment, and local refresh timing. The cited manufacturer material does not support a complete global table of every generation’s engines, trims, reliability results or safety history, so those details should be checked against the specific market and model year rather than inferred from the generation number.

Outlander sales milestones
- Mitsubishi reported 2.6 million Outlander-series sales globally in its 2021 launch communication. This is a manufacturer-reported cumulative figure for the series up to that announcement, not an independent market comparison.
- Mitsubishi reported more than 370,000 Outlander PHEVs sold across two generations as of September 2024.
- Mitsubishi reported 7,794 Outlander PHEVs sold in Japan in fiscal year 2025 and said the model ranked first in Japan’s PHEV category for a second consecutive year. The sales number is company-reported; it does not establish reliability or total-market leadership elsewhere.
Is Airtrek the same as Outlander?
Airtrek is the Japan-market name used for the vehicle released in 2001, and Mitsubishi later replaced that name with Outlander in its company-history timeline. They are part of the same lineage, but an Airtrek and an Outlander can differ in market specification, equipment and parts fitment. Identify the exact market and vehicle before assuming interchangeability.
Which year should you use when buying parts or a manual?
Use the full identifier: market, model year, gasoline or PHEV, engine, drivetrain, trim and—where relevant—screen size. A year-matched service manual is useful only when those details align. The same rule applies to audio units, replacement electronics, body parts and accessories; a listing that says only “Outlander” is not sufficient evidence of fitment.
