Tesla Autopilot vs. Full Self-Driving (Supervised): Features, Limits and European Availability

Autopilot assists with speed, distance and steering; FSD (Supervised) attempts broader route-following manoeuvres but is not autonomous. European availability depends on approval, registration country, vehicle hardware, software, configuration and entitlement.

Short answer: Tesla’s Autopilot name covers driver-assistance functions such as Traffic-Aware Cruise Control and Autosteer. Full Self-Driving (Supervised) is a broader, route-following driver-assistance system that can attempt lane changes, route forks, turns, roundabouts, intersections and highway entry or exit. Neither system is autonomous: you must watch the road, remain ready to intervene and take over immediately when necessary.

In Europe, what you can use depends on more than the country where you are driving. Tesla checks the vehicle’s registration country, regulatory approval, model and trim, hardware, software version, configuration and sometimes prerequisite upgrades. The same model name can therefore have different feature access in two European countries or between two cars of the same model year.

Tesla Autopilot vs. Full Self-Driving: what is the difference?

Autopilot is the name Tesla uses for a group of assistance features focused mainly on speed control, lane keeping and supported motorway driving. Full Self-Driving (Supervised), usually shortened to FSD (Supervised), is positioned as a wider system that can attempt to follow a navigation route and handle more kinds of road situations. The word “Supervised” is important: Tesla does not describe the system as an autonomous chauffeur.

Practical question Autopilot functions FSD (Supervised)
Primary purpose Maintain speed and following distance, and provide steering assistance where supported. Attempt a broader, navigation-led drive that can include urban streets and more complex manoeuvres.
Typical tasks Tesla documents Traffic-Aware Cruise Control; Autosteer; Navigate on Autopilot in supported configurations and markets. Follow navigation, change lanes, choose route forks, navigate around vehicles and objects, make left and right turns, negotiate intersections and roundabouts, and enter or leave highways.
Driver’s role Continuous attention and immediate intervention capability are required. Continuous attention and immediate intervention capability are required; the system does not replace the driver.
Roadway scope Descriptions in the Model 3 manual focus on controlled-access or better-defined roads for the relevant assistance functions. Tesla describes an intended broader range including residential and city streets, subject to the actual market, vehicle, hardware and software.
Availability Varies by Tesla model, trim, hardware, software, market and configuration. Requires regulatory approval and an eligible, correctly registered vehicle; individual features can still vary by location and configuration.

These are system descriptions, not guarantees that every listed function is active on every European Tesla. Tesla’s own support material and the Model 3 Owner’s Manual tell owners to check the exact vehicle and current regional software offering.

What does Tesla Autopilot include?

Traffic-Aware Cruise Control

Traffic-Aware Cruise Control (TACC) controls the vehicle’s speed and maintains a driver-selected following distance from traffic ahead. It is a longitudinal-control feature: it can accelerate or brake within its operating limits, but it is not a promise that the car will understand every hazard or stop in every circumstance.

Autosteer

Autosteer provides steering assistance to keep the Tesla in a detected lane. It does not remove the need to monitor the road, keep your hands and attention appropriately positioned, or intervene when the lane markings, road layout or surrounding traffic exceed the system’s capability.

Navigate on Autopilot

Tesla’s Model 3 manual distinguishes Navigate on Autopilot from both the basic Autopilot functions and FSD (Supervised). Where enabled, it can assist with a navigation route on supported roads. Its availability and exact behaviour still depend on the vehicle and market; do not assume that a Tesla with the Autopilot name can perform every FSD manoeuvre.

What can FSD (Supervised) attempt?

Tesla Support describes FSD (Supervised) as a route-following system that can use the navigation destination to plan and attempt a more complete drive. The documented behaviours include:

  • Following the selected navigation route.
  • Changing lanes and selecting route forks.
  • Navigating around vehicles and other objects.
  • Making left and right turns.
  • Following curves and negotiating intersections.
  • Driving through roundabouts.
  • Entering and exiting highways.

The Model 3 Owner’s Manual describes FSD (Supervised) as intended for a broader range of roadway types, including residential and city streets, than the manual’s descriptions of TACC, Autosteer and Navigate on Autopilot. Tesla Support also lists Autopark and Summon-related capabilities in the FSD feature family, but those functions remain subject to the vehicle, location, software release and local approval.

What “attempt” means in practice

FSD (Supervised) can propose or begin a manoeuvre without guaranteeing that it will complete it correctly. A route may contain an unusual junction, temporary traffic control, a blocked lane, a narrow street or a road marking that the system interprets incorrectly. You are responsible for deciding whether the manoeuvre is safe and for cancelling or taking over whenever it is not.

Is FSD autonomous?

No. Tesla’s current documentation states that enabled FSD (Supervised) features require active driver supervision and do not make the vehicle autonomous. The same principle applies to Autopilot. Tesla Support puts the point plainly:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“None of these advanced driver assistance features make your Tesla vehicle fully autonomous or replace you as the driver.”

The Model 3 Owner’s Manual adds:

“Driver intervention may be required in certain situations, such as on narrow roads with oncoming cars, in construction zones, or while going through complex intersections.”

Your continuing responsibilities

  • Keep your attention on the road and the surrounding traffic.
  • Remain physically and mentally ready to steer, brake or otherwise take control.
  • Do not treat a displayed route, speed or manoeuvre as an instruction that overrides traffic signs, signals or your judgement.
  • Take over early when the road layout is ambiguous or the car’s behaviour is unexpected.
  • Continue supervising after a takeover; disabling the assistance feature does not remove the need to drive safely.

Calling a system “Supervised” is therefore a safety qualification, not a minor naming detail. A Tesla can perform a long sequence of assisted actions while the driver remains the legally and practically responsible road user.

Is FSD available in every European country?

No single Europe-wide availability statement is reliable for all vehicles. Tesla says FSD (Supervised) is offered only in selected markets and that activation depends on regulatory approval and other conditions. The relevant country is generally the country in which the vehicle is registered, not simply the country where the car happens to be travelling.

Registration country and approval

Tesla Support states that FSD (Supervised) is available only when the vehicle is registered in a country where the feature has been approved. Driving a Tesla registered in a non-approved country into an approved country does not make FSD usable there. This prevents a cross-border trip from being treated as a way around national approval rules.

Examples from Tesla’s subscription-market page

Tesla’s subscription support page names the Netherlands, Lithuania, Estonia, Denmark, Belgium and Slovenia among the European markets listed for subscriptions. That list is an example from that page and its scope; it is not a permanent list of every country where every FSD function is available. Tesla’s pages can use different scopes and update at different times. The United Kingdom, for example, is not included in that particular subscription-market list, but that observation alone does not establish a universal “unavailable” conclusion for every UK vehicle or purchase route.

Before paying for or relying on FSD, check the current country-specific information in your Tesla account and the offer shown for the exact vehicle. Tesla’s UK FSD page also says the feature can be activated and used only in regulatory-approved markets.

Can I use FSD while travelling across borders?

Do not assume that a subscription follows you across Europe. Tesla’s registration-country rule means that a vehicle registered in a non-approved country does not become eligible merely because it crosses into an approved one. A vehicle registered in an approved country may still encounter feature restrictions when travelling, because individual functions can depend on local rules, road conditions, software and the vehicle’s configuration.

  1. Check the registration country shown for the vehicle in your Tesla account.
  2. Confirm that FSD (Supervised) is approved for that registration country at the time of travel.
  3. Review the feature and subscription terms for the destination and route.
  4. Plan to drive without the feature if it is unavailable, restricted or disabled after crossing a border.

There is no sound basis for promising uninterrupted FSD operation throughout Europe from a single country purchase.

Why two Teslas with the same model name can have different features

Tesla identifies several variables that can change feature access. They should be checked together rather than treated as a simple country list.

Variable Why it matters What to verify
Registration country Regulatory approval is tied to where the vehicle is registered. The country recorded in the Tesla account and vehicle documents.
Market approval Some FSD functions may not be legally enabled in a particular jurisdiction. The current country-specific Tesla offer and support information.
Hardware Different hardware generations or installed equipment can determine whether a function is supported. The vehicle’s exact hardware configuration and any Tesla-listed upgrade requirement.
Software version Features are delivered and changed through software; a feature may not be present on an older release. The installed software version and the feature list shown for that vehicle.
Model, trim and model year Equipment and approval status can differ across models, trims and production years. The vehicle identification details, not just the badge on the boot.
Configuration and entitlement A subscription, purchased option or prior-owner entitlement can affect what is offered. The Tesla account’s current FSD status and subscription eligibility.

Tesla also warns that prerequisite upgrades may cost extra. A request to install or update hardware is therefore not automatically included in a subscription or in the advertised feature name.

How European FSD subscriptions work

Tesla Support says monthly subscriptions are available for eligible vehicles in Europe, but eligibility and included features vary by vehicle configuration and location. A subscription is not a universal European product with one guaranteed feature set.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What you should not assume about price

Tesla’s product page displays a price, while also warning that price and feature availability may change. The available information does not establish one Europe-wide subscription amount, a single currency conversion or a permanent rate. Check the price shown in your Tesla account for the specific vehicle and country at the moment you intend to subscribe.

What a subscription may not solve

  • It cannot override a country’s regulatory approval.
  • It cannot add hardware that the vehicle does not support unless Tesla offers and completes a required upgrade.
  • It does not guarantee that every FSD-related function is enabled in your location.
  • It does not transfer the responsibility for supervision from the driver to Tesla.

Does FSD transfer when buying a used Tesla?

Do not treat a used-car listing that says “FSD” as proof that the entitlement is active. Tesla Support says the answer depends on how the previous owner obtained the entitlement:

Previous owner’s status What Tesla says for the next owner Action before purchase
Monthly subscription The new owner must subscribe separately. Ask Tesla to confirm that the vehicle is eligible for a new subscription in its registration country.
Purchased entitlement retained by the car The entitlement may remain with the vehicle if it was not transferred. Obtain confirmation for the vehicle identification number and inspect the feature status in the Tesla account.
Claim based on an old transfer promotion Tesla says its FSD transfer program ended on March 31, 2026. Do not rely on an expired promotion; request current written confirmation from Tesla.

Because account status, vehicle history and local approval all matter, the safest sequence is to verify the entitlement with Tesla before signing the purchase contract or valuing the car on the assumption that FSD is included.

How to check a vehicle before subscribing or buying

  1. Open the Tesla account or app linked to the vehicle. Look for the current Autopilot and FSD (Supervised) feature status rather than relying on a seller’s description.
  2. Confirm the registration country. Make sure it matches the country in which you intend to use the feature.
  3. Read the vehicle-specific offer. Check the displayed subscription price, included functions, renewal terms and any stated limitations.
  4. Identify the hardware and software. Record the model, trim, model year, installed hardware and software version, and check whether Tesla lists a prerequisite upgrade.
  5. Ask Tesla to verify entitlement. For a used vehicle, provide the vehicle identification number and request confirmation of any purchased FSD entitlement or subscription eligibility.
  6. Recheck immediately before payment. Availability, prices, approval status and software features can change, so an old screenshot or listing is not sufficient evidence.

Where FSD and Autopilot can struggle

Tesla’s manual specifically warns that intervention may be needed on narrow roads with oncoming cars, in construction zones and at complex intersections. Those examples are especially relevant in Europe, where road widths, temporary works, priority rules, lane markings and junction designs can change quickly between municipalities and countries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Narrow roads and oncoming traffic

A narrow lane may leave little room for a confident passing decision. If the car’s path or speed is inappropriate, take over rather than waiting for the system to resolve the situation.

Construction and temporary traffic control

Cones, temporary signs, shifted lanes and workers can invalidate assumptions based on permanent road markings. Treat a work zone as a high-attention driving task even when the assistance system remains engaged.

Complex intersections and roundabouts

Multiple lanes, unusual priority arrangements, cyclists, pedestrians and late lane changes can require intervention. FSD’s ability to attempt a turn or roundabout does not mean it will select the correct path in every layout.

Unexpected route or object behaviour

FSD may change lanes, choose a route fork or navigate around an object. If the proposed action conflicts with signs, markings, traffic or your intended route, cancel it or take control immediately.

What Tesla’s safety figures do—and do not—prove

No dated, Europe-specific independent statistic was established for comparing Autopilot with FSD (Supervised). Tesla’s product materials show a live fleet-mileage counter and a safety comparison against an estimated U.S. average, but the counter changes over time and the comparison is not a Europe-specific outcome study. Those marketing metrics should not be presented as a settled European safety rate or as proof that FSD is safer in every road, weather or traffic condition.

For a European purchasing decision, the more useful evidence is the vehicle-specific feature status, the applicable approval, the documented operating limits and your ability to supervise continuously.

Which system fits which driver?

Autopilot is the narrower assistance choice when

  • You mainly want speed and following-distance control on compatible roads.
  • You want steering assistance but prefer to make navigation and complex manoeuvre decisions yourself.
  • Your vehicle or registration country does not offer FSD (Supervised).

FSD (Supervised) is the broader assistance choice when

  • Your vehicle is registered in an approved market and the Tesla account offers the feature.
  • You understand that route following, turns, lane changes and roundabouts remain attempts requiring supervision.
  • You are prepared to intervene frequently in unusual, temporary or ambiguous road situations.

Neither choice is appropriate if you are looking for a system that lets you stop monitoring the road, sleep, use a phone or otherwise hand over driving responsibility. The deciding questions are not only “Which package has more features?” but also “Is my exact vehicle eligible here?” and “Can I supervise every manoeuvre for the entire drive?”
