What happened in the 2019 collision?
Futurism reported on July 6, 2021, that the collision occurred in August 2019 and involved a Tesla Model 3 and the Maldonado family’s Ford Explorer. Jovani Maldonado, 15, died after being thrown from the Explorer, according to that report. Futurism also reported that the Tesla was traveling at more than 60 mph and that Jovani was reportedly not wearing a seatbelt; those details are reported descriptions, not findings established here. That is the family’s allegation—not a proven defect, a judicial conclusion, or evidence that the driver was not responsible. What does Autopilot mean in this context?
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation described Autopilot as a system Tesla characterized as SAE Level 2 driving automation, intended to support and assist a human driver. The agency’s investigation scope included whether Autopilot and related Tesla systems could weaken effective driver supervision through human-factors or behavioral safety risks. Calling Autopilot “self-driving” can obscure that distinction. The NHTSA description frames it as driver assistance, not autonomous driving: the system is meant to assist a human, and the agency’s stated concern included whether drivers remain effectively engaged.
