Reports describe it as surprisingly well preserved—but “just as problematic” refers to the Vega model’s reputation for reliability problems, not to any confirmed mechanical fault in this particular car.
What car was buried in the Seward time capsule?
It was a 1975 Chevrolet Vega. A plaque at the site listed “A new 1975 Chevrolet Vega (no mileage)” alongside a new Kawasaki motorcycle, also described as having no mileage. The plaque also noted “Thousands of letters and other memorabilia” contributed by residents and merchants locally and from across the country. Nebraska Public Media published the plaque transcription and an account of the capsule’s opening: Nebraska Public Media’s report on the Seward time capsule.
Where was it buried, and what happened in 2025?
Seward resident Harold Davisson created the capsule to preserve a record of life in his time for people in the future. It was dedicated in 1975 with instructions to open it on July 4, 2025. A pyramid was built over the capsule in 1983 as part of the larger local project.
The capsule held more than the Vega: the plaque records the motorcycle and the letters and keepsakes as well. It also mentions a badly beaten-up 1975 Toyota stored in the pyramid, a separate vehicle from the new Vega inside the capsule.

How well did the Vega survive?
ClassicCars.com reported that the car emerged “relatively unscathed” and that its tires still held air. That is a report of its visible condition, not evidence that the Vega could be driven safely or that its mechanical systems worked: ClassicCars.com’s account of the recovered Vega.
The News Wheel described rust on the hood and an otherwise notably original appearance. That, too, is a secondary visual description rather than a mechanical inspection: The News Wheel’s report on the Vega. Available accounts do not establish whether it was roadworthy, started, or was driven after recovery.

Why call it “problematic”?
The phrase plays on the contrast between the car’s reported preservation and the Chevrolet Vega’s broader reliability reputation. ClassicCars.com describes the model’s four-cylinder engine as notorious for noise, vibration, and overheating. Those are criticisms associated with the Vega line; the reports about the recovered car do not show that this individual example experienced any of them.

No. The Seward capsule contained a 1975 Chevrolet Vega. Tulsa’s better-known “Miss Belvedere” was a separate gold-and-white 1957 Plymouth Belvedere buried in Tulsa, Oklahoma, during the 1957 Tulsarama celebration. The Tulsa Historical Society & Museum describes the car and the contest built around guesses about Tulsa’s population 50 years later: Tulsa Historical Society & Museum’s history of the 1957 Plymouth Belvedere.
