What the official Tesla Apple Watch app can do
Tesla’s native watch integration is no longer limited to viewing information. Depending on your vehicle and software, the app can provide the following functions directly from your wrist:
| Function | What it means |
|---|---|
| Watch Key | Use the Apple Watch as a proximity key to lock and unlock the Tesla. |
| Lock and unlock | Control vehicle access from the watch app. |
| Trunk | Open or close the trunk where supported. |
| Frunk | Open the front trunk. |
| Charge status | View battery and charging information. |
| Charge port | Open the charge port. |
| Climate | Start climate control and use supported climate functions. |
Tesla’s support documentation lists Watch Key, frunk, charge status, charge-port access, and climate control. Tesla owner manuals also document locking and unlocking plus opening and closing the trunk. Check the owner’s manual for your specific Tesla model before assuming every function is available.

This is useful for everyday situations—such as returning to the car with groceries, warming the cabin before leaving, or checking whether charging has finished—but it is not necessarily a complete replica of the iPhone Tesla app. Do not interpret “Apple Watch integration” as “every Tesla command is available on the watch.”
Compatibility checklist
| Requirement | Minimum listed requirement |
|---|---|
| Apple Watch | Series 6, SE (2nd generation), Ultra, or newer |
| watchOS | watchOS 11 or newer |
| Tesla iPhone app | Version 4.39.5 or newer |
| Tesla vehicle software | Version 2024.44.25 or newer |
| Setup | An iPhone paired with the Apple Watch |
| Watch Key pairing | Complete the setup while standing next to the Tesla |
These are Tesla’s current documented thresholds, not a guarantee that every vehicle generation exposes the same controls. Older Apple Watches may support some independent Tesla apps while failing the requirements for Tesla’s native app.
For official documentation, see Tesla’s Apple Watch support page and the relevant Model S manual or other model-specific manual.

- Update the iPhone and Apple Watch to supported software.
- Update the Tesla iPhone app to version 4.39.5 or later.
- Make sure the Tesla itself has vehicle software version 2024.44.25 or later.
- Confirm that the watch is paired with the iPhone.
- Open the Watch app on the iPhone.
- Scroll to the available apps section and install Tesla, if it is not already installed.
- On the watch, press the Digital Crown and open the Tesla app.
- Select your vehicle if more than one Tesla product is associated with your account.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to configure Watch Key if you want to use the watch as a key.
Tesla’s public support instructions direct owners to open Tesla from the watch’s app list, while its owner manual describes adding the app through the iPhone’s Watch app. If the app does not appear, use both paths: verify the software versions, then check the Watch app’s installed and available-app sections.
How to set up Apple Watch as a Tesla key
Watch Key is different from tapping a remote command in the Tesla app. It is a proximity credential intended to behave more like a phone key.
- Stand next to the Tesla.
- Open the Tesla app on the Apple Watch.
- Choose the Watch Key setup option.
- Follow the pairing instructions shown by the app.
- Test locking and unlocking while standing near the vehicle.
- Keep a Tesla key card or another functioning key available until the watch has worked reliably.
Tesla says Watch Key can lock and unlock the vehicle without pressing a button, similarly to a phone key. If setup fails while several phone keys are actively connected, Tesla recommends temporarily turning off Bluetooth on the mobile device and retrying near the vehicle.
Do not make the watch your only key until you have tested it in the places where you normally park. Tesla specifically recommends carrying a functioning physical key in areas with limited or no cellular service, and warns that non-warranty roadside assistance may not cover a lockout caused by limited connectivity and lack of a secondary key.

Does the Apple Watch need the iPhone nearby?
There is no single yes-or-no answer because the watch can operate in different ways.
Watch Key and Bluetooth proximity
Watch Key is intended for nearby vehicle access and should be understood as a Bluetooth/proximity feature. It is not the same as sending a cloud command from anywhere in the world. A watch may be able to unlock a nearby Tesla even when an internet-based command would fail, but you should test the exact behavior with your vehicle.
Internet-based remote controls
Remote climate, charge information, and other commands may require a network path from the watch or its paired devices to Tesla’s services. Tesla’s documentation confirms the need for a paired iPhone for initial installation and setup but does not promise that every official watch command works with the iPhone switched off, absent, or disconnected.
Wi-Fi-only and cellular watches
A cellular Apple Watch may have more connectivity away from the iPhone, but cellular capability does not guarantee that every Tesla function works independently. A Wi-Fi-only watch may depend more heavily on a known Wi-Fi network or the paired iPhone.
Third-party apps make broader claims. Tessie says its Apple Watch controls can use Wi-Fi, cellular, and Bluetooth, with Bluetooth pairing enabling offline controls and Auto Unlock. Watchla’s App Store listing claims Bluetooth and Watch Key functions can work without internet and that a Wi-Fi-only Apple Watch can control compatible Teslas without the phone nearby. Those are vendor claims, not a Tesla guarantee for all vehicles and software versions.
Which Tesla models are supported?
Current Tesla manuals surfaced for Model 3, Model S, Model Y, and Cybertruck document Apple Watch support. However, command availability can differ by vehicle generation and software version. The safest conclusion is that supported Tesla models vary, so check the manual for your exact vehicle rather than relying on a generic compatibility list.
Watchla separately claims Bluetooth and Tesla Apple Watch Key support for Model 3, Model Y, Cybertruck, Model S from model year 2021 onward, and Model X from model year 2021 onward. That is Watchla’s compatibility claim, not a universal Tesla guarantee.

Can an Apple Watch start a Tesla?
Tesla vehicles do not have a conventional gasoline-car ignition sequence. When a third-party app advertises “remote start,” the phrase may refer to unlocking the vehicle, authorizing drive access, or sending a command that prepares the car for use.
Watchla advertises remote start, but readers should confirm what the command does for their specific Tesla before treating it as an engine-start feature. The official Tesla app’s documented Watch Key and access functions are more precise descriptions of how the car is authorized for driving.
Can the watch control climate and charging?
Yes, within the documented limits of the official integration. Tesla lists climate control, charge status, and charge-port opening among the Apple Watch features.
Viewing charge status is not the same as having every charging control from the watch. Starting, stopping, scheduling, or automating charging may be available through the iPhone app or a third-party service rather than the official watch interface. Tessie advertises real-time battery, location, charging status, broader controls, and automation features, but those capabilities belong to Tessie’s product and should not be attributed to Tesla’s native app.

Third-party capabilities in this table are vendor or App Store claims, not independent hands-on verification.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTessie
Tessie is the stronger fit for owners who want analytics, automations, complications, Siri, HomeKit or Home Assistant integrations, and broader Tesla data. Its App Store listing describes a free download with in-app purchases and says the complete product requires a subscription or one-time payment; current prices should be checked directly before purchase.
Tessie’s help documentation says Apple Watch support requires watchOS 8 or later and identifies Series 3 and newer for that feature. That requirement applies to Tessie, not Tesla’s stricter current native-app requirement.

Watchla
Watchla is aimed at watch-centric control. Its listing advertises Bluetooth control, Apple Watch key functionality, offline commands, complications, Siri Shortcuts, multiple vehicles, remote door unlatching, and remote start. It also states that Watchla is not owned or endorsed by Tesla. Its listing shows “Free · In-App Purchases,” but exact current prices should be checked in the App Store.
Security and support trade-offs
The official Tesla app avoids adding another independent Tesla-control service. A third-party app creates an additional trust boundary. Before granting access, review whether credentials remain on-device or pass through a vendor, which Tesla API or Fleet API method is used, how tokens can be revoked, what data is retained, and what happens if the service shuts down or loses API access.
Tesla owner manuals state that Tesla does not support third-party applications contacting the vehicle. That is Tesla’s support position; it is not proof that every third-party app is unsafe. It does mean that reliability, privacy, and future compatibility are ultimately separate considerations from Tesla’s official support.
What about Summon?
Do not choose an Apple Watch app because it promises Summon without checking current support. Tessie’s help center says Tesla stopped supporting Summon in third-party apps as of December 2023, even though its documentation discusses the feature and the Tesla-side limitation. Current availability can depend on Tesla software and the particular app.
Summon is a poor buying criterion. Treat it as a feature to verify immediately before use, not as a capability guaranteed by Apple Watch integration.

The Tesla app does not appear on the watch
- Confirm the watch is Series 6, SE 2, Ultra, or newer.
- Check that watchOS 11 or later is installed.
- Update the Tesla iPhone app to 4.39.5 or later.
- Check the Tesla’s vehicle software version.
- Verify that the iPhone and Apple Watch are correctly paired.
- Open the iPhone’s Watch app and install Tesla from the available apps section.
- Restart the watch and iPhone if the app remains missing, then check again after updates finish.
Tesla specifically advises updating the iPhone and Apple Watch when the app is missing.
Watch Key setup fails
- Move next to the Tesla.
- Confirm Bluetooth is enabled on the watch.
- Temporarily disable Bluetooth on the iPhone if several phone keys are connected.
- Retry the Watch Key setup.
- Test locking and unlocking before depending on the watch.
- Keep a physical key card or another backup key available.
Commands time out or the car does not respond
First distinguish a nearby Bluetooth action from a remote cloud command. Check the watch’s network connection, move to an area with better coverage, confirm the Tesla is awake if appropriate, and wait for the command result before tapping again. If only remote commands fail in a garage or dead zone, the issue may be connectivity rather than the watch key itself.

Garage or cellular dead-zone lockout
Test the exact behavior in your normal parking environment. Do not assume that because Watch Key works near the car, climate or charging commands will also work without internet. Tesla recommends carrying a physical key in locations with unreliable cellular connectivity.
Accidental or repeated commands
Trunk, frunk, and door commands deserve more caution than a battery-status check. Avoid placing high-impact commands on the easiest-to-tap complication, wait for confirmation, and inspect the vehicle before issuing another command. Do not rapidly repeat a command merely because the interface appears slow. App Store reviews include anecdotal reports of delayed Bluetooth commands and repeated trunk behavior; these reports are not proof of a universal bug, but they illustrate the risk of duplicate taps.
Is a third-party Tesla Apple Watch app worth it?
- Choose Tesla’s official app if you want the simplest route, first-party compatibility, Watch Key, and common access, climate, and charging functions.
- Consider Tessie if you specifically want analytics, automations, complications, Siri, HomeKit or Home Assistant integrations, or broader vehicle data—and accept the subscription or one-time-purchase model and third-party trust boundary.
- Consider Watchla if you prioritize a watch-focused control layout, multiple vehicles, complications, Siri Shortcuts, and the developer’s Bluetooth or offline-operation claims.
Neither Tessie nor Watchla should be described as Tesla-approved. If you use one, review its privacy terms, understand its access method, and know how to revoke access. Keep the official Tesla app and a physical backup key available until the alternative has proved reliable.

Tesla’s Watch Key is a Tesla-specific feature in the Tesla app. It should not be presented as proof that Tesla supports Apple’s generic CarKey framework. Apple describes CarKey as a separate framework requiring Apple entitlements; the two technologies belong to different ecosystems. See Apple’s CarKey documentation for the technical distinction.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an Apple Watch unlock a Tesla?
Yes. Tesla’s official Apple Watch app supports Watch Key plus lock and unlock functions on compatible vehicles, watches, and software versions.
Can I use a Tesla with an Apple Watch without my iPhone?
Watch Key is a nearby Bluetooth-style feature, while remote commands may require an internet connection through the watch or paired devices. Tesla does not promise that every official watch function works with the iPhone absent, so test your exact setup and carry a backup key.
Can an Apple Watch start Tesla climate control?
Yes, climate control is listed among the official Tesla Apple Watch features. This is separate from “remote start,” a third-party term that can mean drive authorization or vehicle preparation rather than starting an engine.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does Tesla support Summon from Apple Watch?
Do not assume it does. Third-party Summon support has changed, and current availability must be verified for the vehicle software and specific app.
Is Tessie better than Tesla’s official Apple Watch app?
It depends on the goal. Tesla’s app is the safer default for first-party access and basic controls; Tessie is aimed at owners who want analytics, automations, integrations, complications, and broader data.
The Bottom Line
For most owners, start with Tesla’s official Apple Watch app. It now covers the essential wrist controls and Watch Key without requiring another Tesla-control provider. Consider Tessie or Watchla only when you specifically need offline Bluetooth behavior, complications, Siri Shortcuts, automations, analytics, or more detailed data—and keep a physical key available until the setup has been tested.
