Android Auto 14.8 is an older 2025 release, not the version most drivers should install today. Reports on build 14.8.652804 described a redesigned Google Maps search area, a home/work shortcut, a new “Digital Assistant” settings label, and messaging-related code. However, these details came from third-party APK analysis rather than an official Google changelog. As of August 2026, newer 17.x builds are available, so most users should update through Google Play instead of sideloading 14.8.
What was Android Auto 14.8?
Android Auto 14.8 was reported in July 2025 as build 14.8.652804. A July 9 report described it as a beta, while a July 15 article described the same build as stable. Because those reports were third-party and no official Google 14.8 changelog is cited, the careful description is that Android Auto 14.8 was reported as stable.

Android Auto is the phone-powered interface projected onto a compatible car display. It is not the same product as Android Automotive OS, which is built into some vehicle infotainment systems. Do not treat an Android Auto phone APK as a system update for an Android Automotive vehicle. Google’s Android Auto overview explains the distinction and supported capabilities.
What Android Auto 14.8 reportedly changed
1. A redesigned Google Maps search area
APK analysis and screenshots reported a larger Google Maps search field in Android Auto 14.8. The change appears focused on making destination search more prominent on the car display; it should not be interpreted as proof of better voice recognition, predictive routing, traffic intelligence, or learned driving behavior.

The same reporting showed a split, briefcase-style shortcut associated with saved work and home destinations. It becomes useful after those locations have been configured in Google Maps. This was a reported interface change, not a guarantee that every account, phone, vehicle, or head unit would display it. 2. The “Digital Assistant” settings label
Resources in the reported 14.8 build used the label “Digital Assistant”, with wording including:
- “Manage your digital assistant”
- “Use your voice to get more done in the car.”
This looks like a broader assistant naming and integration change. It does not prove that Gemini was active for every Android Auto user. A label change, preparatory code, and actual assistant availability are separate things.
3. Messaging-related resources
The analysis also identified the resource:
messaging_compose_via_app_with_contact_nameThat string appears to suggest composing a message through an app with a contact name. A resource string alone does not establish that the feature was complete, broadly enabled, or supported by every messaging application. The defensible claim is that Android Auto 14.8 contained messaging-related resources—not that it delivered universal new messaging support.
Does Android Auto 14.8 add Gemini?
Do not install Android Auto 14.8 expecting it to unlock Gemini. Google says Gemini is being integrated into Android Auto to replace the classic Google Assistant experience, but the transition is being rolled out by Google over time. Eligibility can depend on the account, phone, language, device, and other rollout conditions.

Google’s current guidance indicates that users generally need to set Gemini as their primary assistant on the Android phone before the car-side experience becomes available when their account is eligible. Google’s official Android Auto navigation instructions confirm that drivers can select a compatible navigation app from the car display and use voice commands such as “Navigate to [location].”
How to check the reported Maps changes
- Open Google Maps on your phone.
- Confirm that Home and Work addresses are saved.
- Update Google Maps and Android Auto through Google Play.
- Connect the phone to the vehicle.
- Open Google Maps on the car display.
- Look for the larger search field and the home/work shortcut.
If neither control appears, do not assume the installation failed. The interface may not be enabled for your account or vehicle, the reported design may have been staged or experimental, or the relevant Google Maps and Android Auto versions may not be current. Restart the phone and head unit after updating, then check again.
Should you download Android Auto 14.8 now?
For ordinary drivers, no. Android Auto 14.8 is a historical 2025 build. The current Android Auto package listings show substantially newer 17.x releases, including version 17.4.6630 uploaded in July 2026. The 17.4.6630 listing and Android Auto’s package listing show why reverting to 14.8 is not a sensible general update strategy.
Use 14.8 only if the goal is historical testing, reverse engineering, or diagnosing a specifically identified compatibility issue. It is not a recommended way to obtain current Android Auto features or Gemini.

Safest way to update Android Auto
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Search for Android Auto.
- Choose the app published by Google LLC.
- Tap Update or Install.
- Reconnect the phone to the vehicle.
If an update is not visible, it may be staged or unavailable for your device at that moment. Waiting for Play Store availability is safer than downloading an obsolete APK from an unverified source. Android Auto is distributed through Google’s normal app ecosystem; there is no legitimate reason to pay for an “Android Auto download.”

What to know before sideloading an APK
Third-party repositories such as APKMirror can list historical Android Auto packages, but they are not Google’s official distribution route. Listings may include multiple architecture, Android-version, DPI, signature, or bundle variants.
Some packages are split APKs rather than one standalone file. Installing the wrong variant can cause an installation error, while a package signed differently from the installed version may require removing the existing installation first. Sideloading can also disrupt the normal Play Store update path or allow a newer automatic update to replace the historical build.
Before attempting a historical installation, confirm the Android version and architecture, identify whether the download is a bundle, back up relevant settings, and have a rollback plan. Do not use a random APK as a fix for a missing Maps redesign or Gemini.
Troubleshooting
The new Maps search bar is missing
- Update Google Maps and Android Auto.
- Confirm that Home and Work are saved in Google Maps.
- Restart the phone and vehicle head unit.
- Reconnect Android Auto.
- Consider that the feature may be account-, vehicle-, or rollout-dependent.
Reinstalling 14.8 does not guarantee that the redesign will appear.

“Digital Assistant” appears, but Gemini does not
This can be expected. The wording may reflect interface preparation or an assistant abstraction, while Gemini access remains controlled by Google’s rollout and eligibility rules. Check Gemini’s phone settings and Google’s current Android Auto guidance rather than trying older APKs.
The APK will not install
Likely causes include an incorrect architecture, unsupported Android version, incompatible split variant, signature mismatch, or a bundle that requires a split-package installer. Stop rather than repeatedly trying unrelated packages.
Android Auto stopped connecting after an update
- Restart the phone.
- Restart the vehicle’s infotainment system.
- For wired Android Auto, try a high-quality USB cable.
- For wireless Android Auto, confirm Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and mobile data are available as required.
- Remove and recreate the vehicle connection if necessary.
- Only consider rollback with a clearly identified compatible build.
Google describes Android Auto as a system that uses the phone connection to provide navigation, calls, messaging, and media in compatible vehicles.
