TELO MT1 Solar Options: Roof, Tonneau and Camper-Shell Panels Explained

TELO’s announced MT1 solar options include cab-roof panels, a solar tonneau and a camper shell. Here’s what Aptera claimed about energy, what that could mean in theory, and what remains unconfirmed.

TELO and Aptera announced three solar configurations for the compact MT1 electric truck: panels on the cab roof, a solar tonneau bed cover, or a solar camper shell. Aptera said the panels could produce 1–2 kWh per day depending on location and season, but that is a partner-announced estimate—not a verified range gain or proof the options can be ordered today. If you’re asking, “Can solar panels charge an electric truck off-grid?” they may contribute energy, but the announcement does not establish that they can replace charging or deliver a dependable number of miles.

What solar panel options did TELO and Aptera announce?

In a January 15, 2025 announcement, Aptera described three solar treatments for the TELO MT1. They differ mainly in where the panels sit and whether the setup also covers the truck bed.

Configuration Panel placement and form Practical interpretation
Cab-roof panels Solar paneling over the cab roof. Adds a solar surface without a bed cover or camper shell.
Solar tonneau Paneling integrated into a truck-bed cover. Combines solar generation with bed coverage. Aptera said the cover preserves storage versatility, but did not quantify access or cargo trade-offs.
Solar camper shell A shell extending from the cab over the bed, with solar paneling. Aptera described this option as increasing charging capacity and storage options. Its larger covered footprint is a form-factor inference, not a measured output ranking.

These are the configurations in Aptera’s announcement, not a confirmed current order sheet. It did not publish a configuration-by-configuration output table, dimensions, or measured comparison of cargo access.

How much energy—and driving range—might the panels add?

Aptera’s January 15, 2025 announcement said each panel could generate up to 200 watts at peak sunlight, and that the system could deliver 1–2 kWh per day depending on location and season. The announcement also put TELO vehicle consumption at 200–300 Wh per mile. Those figures are company statements; the announcement supplied no independent field tests or detailed assumptions for the daily estimate. Read Aptera’s announcement.

#1 Best Overall

A simple calculation using those figures gives about 3.3–10 miles’ worth of energy: 1–2 kWh divided by 0.2–0.3 kWh per mile. That is an arithmetic inference before conversion losses and real-world variation, not a promised driving-range gain. Peak wattage is not sustained output, and daily harvest will vary with sunlight, season, location, shading, and how the vehicle is parked.

Aptera’s co-founder and co-CEO Steve Fambro characterized the partnership in promotional terms: “Our unique curved solar cell design makes it the perfect application to propel automotive utility further than ever before,” said Steve Fambro, Co-Founder & Co-CEO of Aptera. “Together with TELO, we’re harnessing the power of the sun to make life off the grid a reality for everyone by putting the sun to work for them.” The quotation is the partner’s stated ambition, not independent evidence of off-grid performance.

Can solar panels charge an electric truck off-grid?

Solar can contribute energy, but the announcement does not show that the MT1 panels alone can reliably charge the truck for a particular trip or replace access to charging. The 1–2 kWh daily figure is variable, and no independent test establishes what the TELO configuration delivers in real use. For off-grid planning, treat solar as supplemental energy unless you have verified output for your own conditions and needs.

There is a separate use case: running equipment at camp or on a worksite. Solar electricity must be stored or converted for that equipment. A compatible portable power station with MC4 solar input is one accessory category to investigate; check the actual panel and station specifications rather than assuming compatibility. A DIY battery setup needs a correctly specified MPPT controller and battery. Neither is stated to be included with the TELO solar options.

What should buyers verify about availability and price?

Aptera said the solar options would be available for preorder later in 2025 and that a fully realized drivable prototype was then in production. That dated statement does not establish whether the options are orderable now, whether production or delivery has begun, or what they cost. The announcement provided no prices. Confirm current availability, specifications, and pricing directly with TELO or Aptera before making a purchase decision.

How do other solar truck products compare?

Other products show that solar bed covers exist, but they do not establish TELO fitment or equivalent performance. Worksport’s SOLIS is a vehicle-specific folding solar tonneau; its product page says each unit is engineered for a particular truck make, model, and bed geometry. It does not establish compatibility with the TELO MT1.

6.5 ft beds Up to 480 W Worksport product-page claim under ideal conditions; page accessed October 8, 2026.

The SOLIS page also uses a 600 W headline for an 8 ft bed; that separate headline should not be substituted for the size-specific tiers above. Worksport says SOLIS uses standard MC4 connectors and that a compatible power station or solar-ready device should accept 12–60V DC and up to 20A through MC4. It describes use with a power station or an MPPT controller and deep-cycle battery in a DIY 12V setup. Verify the specific device’s input limits and connector requirements. See Worksport’s SOLIS specifications. Worksport announced online sales for SOLIS and its COR battery system on December 1, 2025, describing applications including light trucks, overlanding, worksites, emergency backup, and off-grid use; this is adjacent market context, not a TELO partnership or fitment claim. Read Worksport’s launch announcement.

For context on a different vehicle category, GEM describes its eL XD as a street-legal electric utility truck with a 1,629-lb payload, a 1 kW onboard charger, and an optional solar panel it says can extend drive time between charges by up to 40%. Those are GEM’s claims about its utility vehicle, not comparable TELO test results. See GEM’s eL XD specifications.
