Those figures do not show that the plant, or any other Chinese car factory, operates without workers.
Is China building an unmanned car factory before 2030?
There is not enough identified evidence to confirm that it is. Indian Defence Review published the before-2030 prediction on February 5, 2026, but its article did not name a manufacturer, factory, city, project, analyst, or source document for the forecast. No official announcement or independent primary evidence located for this claim establishes that a Chinese automotive plant is being built to operate without people. Indian Defence Review’s article is evidence that the prediction was made, not proof that the project exists.
That distinction matters because “unmanned” is a stronger claim than “highly automated.” A factory can use robots for many production tasks and still rely on people for supervision, maintenance, material movement, troubleshooting, or quality decisions. The available evidence does not establish that any Chinese car plant has eliminated workers across the entire site.
What Xiaomi says about automation at its Beijing car factory
Xiaomi’s current corporate page describes its Beijing Xiaomi Auto Factory as an integrated smart-manufacturing park. The company reports 91% overall automation and 100% automation for key body-shop processes. These are Xiaomi’s own figures, not an independent audit. The overall percentage is not defined on the page as proof that 91% of the workforce has been replaced or that 91% of every task is performed without people. Xiaomi’s factory information supports a claim of substantial automation, not a worker-free car plant.

When evaluating automation percentages, check what the denominator covers. A figure for a named production area such as the body shop is not interchangeable with a whole-factory figure. Nor does a percentage alone disclose whether people remain on site for support work or how the company calculated it.
Why Xiaomi’s smartphone factories are not proof of an unmanned car plant
Xiaomi also describes high automation at smartphone facilities, but those examples concern different products and production lines. Its corporate page says 96.8% of assembly, testing, and packaging equipment at its Beijing smartphone smart factory was developed in-house. For its Wuhan smart factory, Xiaomi reports 100% automation across key processes and AI-vision inspection of finished products and key components. Neither statement establishes that a car factory is fully unmanned.

Xiaomi’s 2024 interim report says its Changping, Beijing, smartphone factory launched in July 2024. It reports annual capacity of 10 million flagship smartphones, 100% automation of key processes, and full-chain digitalization of industrial production. These are company-reported details about a smartphone factory, not a vehicle plant or a current independent assessment. What “dark factory” or “lights-out production” means
A “dark factory” usually refers to production designed to run without ordinary human workstations or lighting, with machines handling manufacturing and inspection. The label should not be treated as a precise certification. A plant may automate selected operations, or even many key processes, without operating entirely without people. The before-2030 article describes a facility of the latter kind but does not provide evidence that one is being built in China.

How strong are the other claims tied to the forecast?
The February 2026 article also attributes a possible “up to 50%” cut in development and production timelines to Accenture, but does not identify a report, date, methodology, or scope. An original Accenture source for that exact figure was not established, so it should not be treated as a verified measure of what an unmanned car plant would achieve. The article’s claims about thousands of jobs being eliminated, replacement roles, or national policy timelines are likewise not substantiated by a named study or official document in the evidence available.

A convincing confirmation would identify a specific automaker and site, then provide traceable evidence that the project is designed to operate without people—not merely that it uses extensive automation. Useful evidence would include an official project announcement, a clear explanation of which processes and support functions are included, and independently checkable information about staffing or operating conditions. Until such evidence is available, the before-2030 claim remains an unverified prediction.
