The current diesel Safari gives you an established 2.0-litre powertrain and published dimensions. The EV is expected to be larger-market Tata’s electric alternative, but its decisive details are still projections. What is actually available in October 2026?
Tata has not published a confirmed Safari EV retail launch date or final specification sheet in the sources available for this comparison. Autocar India’s 3 April 2026 report describes a festive-season 2026 launch plan, while its 5 October 2026 expected-price and specifications page continues to label the timing and specifications as expected. A reported plan is not evidence that bookings, deliveries or customer test drives have begun.
The Safari ICE, by contrast, has a live Tata Motors specifications page. Exact price depends on variant and location, and Tata asks buyers to confirm the current quote with a dealer. That distinction is important: you can evaluate and purchase an ICE car now, but an EV decision still involves waiting for information.

The EV figures you should treat as forecasts
Launch timing
“Festive season 2026” identifies a target period, not a particular date and not proof that sales have started. Tata could still announce a date, open bookings, revise the timetable or restrict availability by city. Do not pay a non-refundable amount solely on the assumption that a planned window guarantees delivery.
Expected price
The reported ₹22.50–30.00 lakh band is an ex-showroom India estimate from Autocar India’s page updated 5 October 2026. It is not a Tata price list. On-road cost will also vary with registration, insurance, taxes, optional equipment and state policy. Compare the eventual EV price with an ICE variant carrying similar equipment, rather than with the cheapest Safari grade.
Battery, motors and all-wheel drive
Autocar India’s 3 April 2026 report expects the EV to use Tata’s acti.ev+ platform used by the Harrier EV and to offer likely 65 kWh and 75 kWh battery options. Rear-wheel drive is expected, with an anticipated all-wheel-drive option. None of those Safari-specific combinations is confirmed. Availability of AWD, battery size by trim, charging hardware and motor output could change before launch.

No source in this evidence set gives a certified Safari EV range. The published expectation that it may trail the Harrier EV reflects the Safari’s greater size and mass; it does not produce a number you can use for route planning. Do not substitute a Harrier EV test result, brochure figure or estimate for a Safari EV figure.
How the decision changes with your time horizon
You need a vehicle in the next few weeks
Start with current Safari ICE stock. Ask two or more authorised dealers for written, dated on-road quotations for the same variant, transmission and accessories. Check waiting time, registration location, insurance inclusions and cancellation terms. A test drive lets you assess the driving position, diesel response, ride, noise and third-row access instead of making a decision from a projected EV specification.

You can wait several months
Waiting has value only if the EV’s unresolved details affect your choice. Monitor Tata’s launch announcement and request the final brochure before comparing deposits or exchange offers. Keep an ICE quotation as a baseline, but re-price it on the day you are ready: the August 2025 introductory prices are no longer current.
You can wait until the EV is fully specified
This is the lowest-uncertainty route. Once Tata confirms price, battery, certified range, charging rate, seating and variants, calculate whether the car fits your routes and charging access. You can then compare equivalent ICE and EV equipment rather than paying for an unknown product.

Price: compare like-for-like, not an old headline number
Tata Motors’ 5 August 2025 Adventure X press release listed an introductory Safari Adventure X+ price of ₹19.99 lakh and other introductory variant prices. The release explicitly made those prices valid only through 31 October 2025. They must not be presented as October 2026 prices or used as a guaranteed ICE-versus-EV saving calculation.
For a useful price comparison, create two matched specifications:
- ICE baseline: the current diesel variant with the seating, safety and convenience equipment your household actually needs.
- EV candidate: the final Safari EV trim with a comparable battery, drive layout and equipment, once Tata publishes it.
- Real purchase figure: on-road price in your registration state, including insurance and compulsory charges, with dealer discounts shown separately.
- Ownership assumptions: record your annual kilometres, home electricity tariff, public-charging use and insurance quote, but do not treat an unconfirmed EV charging rate or battery warranty as fact.
The evidence does not establish fuel-versus-electric lifetime savings, resale value, maintenance savings or a payback period for these two Safari versions. Those outcomes depend on your distance, energy prices, charging mix, financing, service costs and the final EV warranty.

Powertrain and driving-use trade-offs
What the ICE Safari specifies
Tata’s current Safari specifications page lists a 2.0-litre Kryotec turbocharged diesel producing 170 PS and 350 Nm. It also lists a manual transmission; variant-level transmission and equipment details should be checked with the dealer because the page shows values that can vary by grade. The diesel’s established specification makes it the predictable choice for buyers who want to drive away before the EV launch is clarified.

The projected battery options and rear-drive/AWD possibilities do not tell you how quickly the Safari EV accelerates, how it behaves when fully loaded, or how much range remains at highway speed with passengers and luggage. Motor output, torque, kerb weight, ground clearance, towing limits, thermal management and drive-mode details require Tata’s final sheet and a test drive.
Match the drivetrain to your conditions
- Choose the ICE route when immediate availability, familiar refuelling and a known powertrain matter more than waiting.
- Consider the EV route when you have a dependable place to charge, can tolerate launch uncertainty and are prepared to check the certified range against your longest regular trip.
- Do not assume that the projected AWD version will launch, be offered on every battery, or have the same price and range as a rear-wheel-drive version.
Charging and trip planning for a prospective Safari EV
Charging access is a decision gate, not an accessory question. Before ordering an EV, identify where the vehicle will spend most nights, whether a dedicated electrical connection is permitted, and how often you would need public charging. Tata Motors’ electric-vehicle portfolio page names Tata Power as a public-infrastructure and home-charger installation partner, but it does not establish the Safari EV’s charger rating, charging time, included hardware or installation price.
Use this checklist after the official specifications appear:
- Confirm the usable battery capacity, certified test-cycle range and the conditions behind the published figure.
- Check AC home-charging input, DC fast-charging maximum, connector type and whether the cable or wall unit is included with the selected trim.
- Measure your parking electrical supply and obtain an installation assessment before signing a purchase order.
- Map your normal commute and longest frequent journey, adding a conservative reserve for weather, traffic, passengers and highway speeds.
- Verify public chargers on those routes, payment methods, operating hours and whether a second charger exists nearby if the first is occupied or unavailable.
- Ask Tata for battery and high-voltage-component warranty terms, roadside assistance coverage and the procedure after a charging or isolation fault.
Until those answers exist, a generic “EV is cheaper to run” claim would be speculation. Your practical result depends on how much charging occurs at home, how often you use public fast chargers and the electricity and fuel prices in your area.

Seven seats, luggage and everyday family use
ICE dimensions and boot reference
Tata lists the diesel Safari at 4,668 × 1,922 × 1,795 mm, with a 2,741 mm wheelbase and 420 litres of boot space. These are the published ICE figures on Tata’s specifications page, accessed 13 October 2026. Confirm whether the stated boot capacity applies to the exact seating configuration and how much space remains when the third row is occupied or folded.
EV practicality is still an open question
The reviewed sources do not provide the Safari EV’s final exterior dimensions, third-row layout or boot volume. Battery packaging could affect floor height, under-floor storage or the usable space behind the third row, but no Safari EV-specific conclusion is established. Inspect the production car with the child seats, adults and luggage you actually use before paying a booking amount.
Questions to ask at the physical inspection
- Can two adults enter and sit in the third row without the second-row seat becoming unusable?
- Where do charging cables, a spare wheel or puncture kit and the emergency equipment go?
- With all seats occupied, can your normal bags fit without blocking the rear view?
- Does the EV’s battery protection reduce ground clearance on the roads you use?
- Are ISOFIX points, air-conditioning vents, USB ports and seat-fold controls present on the exact grade?
Features, safety and variant checks
Equipment is grade-dependent. Tata’s 2025 Adventure X release described features including adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree surround-view system and terrain-response modes, but those details belong to that dated release and do not prove that every current ICE trim—or any future EV trim—includes them. Confirm the current brochure and physically test each feature on the vehicle quoted to you.
Build a variant checklist rather than relying on a model name:

- Airbags and other safety equipment listed for the exact grade and seating layout.
- Driver-assistance functions, including the conditions in which adaptive cruise control operates.
- Camera coverage, parking sensors and whether the 360-degree view is standard or optional.
- Terrain modes, drive modes and tyre specification.
- Infotainment, navigation, connected services, climate controls and rear-seat provisions.
- Warranty duration, roadside assistance and service intervals for the selected powertrain.
Comparative safety ratings, real-world performance and feature parity between the ICE and EV cannot be established from the material available here. Treat a dealer’s verbal promise as unconfirmed until it appears in the final quotation or official brochure.

A practical buying process
If you are buying the ICE Safari now
- Choose the required seating configuration, transmission and must-have safety features before discussing discounts.
- Download or request the current Tata specification and price information for your registration state.
- Obtain written on-road quotes from at least two dealers, with insurance, accessories, taxes, delivery charges and discounts itemised.
- Test-drive the exact engine and transmission combination, then try the third row and load your usual luggage.
- Check the vehicle identification details, manufacturing date, warranty terms and delivery inspection process before final payment.
- Keep the quote and promised equipment attached to the booking paperwork; do not rely on the expired 2025 introductory prices.
If you are waiting for the EV
- Set a maximum budget using the estimated ₹22.50–30.00 lakh ex-showroom band only as a planning range, not as a quote.
- Ask Tata to confirm the launch date, booking terms and delivery coverage for your city.
- Obtain the final battery, motor, drive, certified range, charging and warranty data in writing.
- Inspect the third row, boot and ground clearance with your family before comparing deposits.
- Compare an equivalent ICE trim using a fresh dealer quote from the same month.
- Decide only after checking that home and route charging can support your normal driving, with a backup plan for long trips.
Which version fits common buyer situations?
“I need a seven-seater immediately.”
The ICE Safari is the actionable choice because its current specifications and dealer process exist now. Confirm stock, price and the exact seating and equipment before committing.
“I can wait, but I do not have home charging.”
Wait for the EV’s official charging and range information before ruling it in. Frequent reliance on public charging may or may not suit your routes, and the available evidence does not quantify the cost or convenience for your location.
“My longest trips are frequent and remote.”
Do not reserve the EV on projected battery sizes alone. Require a certified range, charging performance and a route-level charging plan. Until then, the ICE offers a known refuelling model, though your choice should still follow a test drive and current quote.

The EV may become a strong candidate once Tata confirms its range, charger and price. Overnight charging access solves only one part of the decision; verify seating, boot space, service support and the final warranty as well.
“I want AWD for difficult roads.”
AWD is only an anticipated Safari EV configuration at this stage. Do not pay a premium or delay an ICE purchase on the assumption that an AWD EV will launch in your preferred trim.
What to monitor before the Safari EV decision
- An official Tata launch announcement with a specific date and booking instructions.
- Final ex-showroom and on-road prices by battery, drive and seating variant.
- Certified range, usable battery capacity and charging times under stated test conditions.
- Confirmation of rear-wheel drive and whether an AWD version is actually offered.
- Production-car dimensions, third-row access, boot volume and payload.
- Variant-level safety and driver-assistance equipment, warranties and service requirements.
- Availability in your city and an opportunity to test-drive the production vehicle.
Until these items are published, the rational split is simple: buy the established Safari ICE when timing and certainty dominate, or keep your current vehicle and wait when an electric powertrain and the ability to charge conveniently are worth accepting launch uncertainty.
