A Tata Nano’s mileage depends on its fuel type, transmission, condition and how it is driven. CarDekho lists ARAI figures of 23.9 km/l for manual petrol, 21.9 km/l for automatic petrol and 36 km/kg for manual CNG, but these are reference figures—not a promise of what a used car will deliver. To estimate your own running costs, measure its consumption and use your local fuel price.

What mileage does a Tata Nano give?

CarDekho’s listing gives the following ARAI mileage figures. It also identifies the Nano as discontinued, so these are reference specifications for the model, not a claim about new-car availability or current service support.

Fuel and transmission CarDekho listed ARAI mileage
Petrol, manual 23.9 km/l
Petrol, automatic 21.9 km/l
CNG, manual 36 km/kg

CarDekho’s Nano mileage listing attributes these figures to ARAI; they are not independent real-world tests. Another secondary listing, CarWale’s variant table, shows figures including 25.4 km/l for certain petrol variants and 36 km/kg for one CNG entry. The databases do not match in every case, so don’t average them or treat them as interchangeable. Check the specific fuel and variant, then use your own car’s measured economy for a cost estimate.

Why your used Nano may differ

Tata’s owner’s manual says, “Your vehicle’s fuel economy is mainly dependent on your style of driving.” It also identifies road conditions, traffic, maintenance and vehicle condition as influences on observed economy. A used car’s actual mileage can therefore differ from a published figure, even when its fuel and transmission match.

How to measure your car’s mileage

  1. Fill the tank or cylinder consistently and record the odometer reading and quantity of fuel added.
  2. Drive as you normally would over a representative route mix, then refill in the same way.
  3. Calculate distance travelled divided by the fuel added: kilometres per litre for petrol or kilometres per kilogram for CNG.
  4. Repeat over several fill-ups. A longer record is more useful than one trip, especially if traffic or route conditions vary.

Keep units consistent, and compare cars only when route mix and driving conditions are reasonably similar. Do not compare a petrol figure in km/l directly with a CNG figure in km/kg.

How much does a Tata Nano cost to run?

There is no single useful monthly or annual fuel bill without the distance driven, local fuel price and the mileage you actually achieve. Calculate fuel spending with your own inputs:

  • Petrol: kilometres driven ÷ observed km/l × local price per litre.
  • CNG: kilometres driven ÷ observed km/kg × local price per kilogram.

For example, if you know your monthly distance, your car’s measured economy and the price you pay locally, substitute those values into the relevant formula. The result is fuel cost only; budget separately for maintenance, insurance, taxes, parking and repairs. CarWale’s cost calculator likewise asks for daily distance and local fuel price, so its output depends on the assumptions entered.

The 2013 Tata Nano Twist owner’s manual specifies a 15-litre fuel tank. That is a capacity, not a reliable range estimate: actual distance per tank depends on the car’s measured mileage and usable fuel. CNG uses a different unit and should be estimated from kg consumed, not litres.

How often should you service a Tata Nano?

The intervals below are from the 2013 Tata Nano Twist maintenance schedule. They are historical manual guidance, not a current service-price estimate. Check the manual for the exact model year, trim and fuel system before applying them.

Item 2013 Nano Twist manual interval
Engine oil and oil filter Every 10,000 km or 12 months, whichever comes first
Air-filter element Clean at the scheduled interval; replace at 30,000 km. Clean or replace more often in severe dust.
Fuel filter Listed at 10,000 km
Alternator belt Replace at 40,000 km or two years, whichever comes first; inspect drive belts at services.
Coolant Change at 40,000 km or two years, whichever comes first
Spark plugs Replace at 30,000 km
Transaxle oil Change at 20,000 km
Brake fluid Replace at 40,000 km or two years, whichever comes first; inspect brake components.
Brake linings, tyres, suspension, battery and HVAC Recurring inspections or service actions are included; consult the exact manual for the applicable schedule.

What the old free-service schedule means

The 2013 manual lists the first three services as free for labour only: at 1,000–1,500 km or three months, 10,000–10,500 km or 12 months, and 20,000–20,500 km or 24 months, whichever came first. It says later services were chargeable. This was a historical new-car entitlement, not a benefit available to a current used-car owner.

Budgeting for service and repairs today

A comparable current annual service-cost figure is not established. For a specific Nano, ask a local workshop for an itemized estimate based on its condition and service records. Repair costs can vary with location and parts availability; don’t turn an old maintenance schedule into a current annual budget.

Can driving habits improve Nano fuel economy?

Tata’s owner’s manual recommends practices that can help avoid unnecessary fuel use, but it does not promise a particular mileage gain:

  • Keep the air filter clean; the manual warns that a clogged filter can reduce power and fuel economy.
  • Maintain correct tyre pressure. An under-inflated tyre increases running resistance.
  • Do not rest your foot on the clutch pedal.

These are manufacturer recommendations. Actual results still depend on driving style, traffic, road conditions and vehicle condition.

What to check before comparing Nano variants

For a meaningful petrol-versus-CNG or manual-versus-automatic comparison, keep the comparison specific:

  • Identify fuel type, transmission and variant.
  • Keep units distinct: petrol is measured in km/l, CNG in km/kg.
  • Separate attributed listing figures from measured economy on comparable routes.
  • Use local fuel prices and the distance you actually drive to compare fuel spending.
  • Consider service history and condition; a published mileage figure cannot account for an individual used car’s state.
