There is no universal winner. A used Tata Indica V2 diesel has the stronger published mileage figures, so it can suit substantial, regular driving when the individual car is mechanically sound. A petrol V2 may be the safer choice for lower annual mileage, simpler local compliance, or when a particular petrol car has clearly better maintenance history and condition.
Do not compare cars by the “V2” badge alone. Confirm the model year, engine, fuel type, registration, documents and service record, then have the exact vehicle independently inspected. The figures below are historical or secondary references, not guarantees for an old used car.

What the Indica V2 petrol and diesel actually are
Tata Motors says the Indica was launched in 1998 and that an upgraded V2 version was introduced in 2001. In its 2005 filing, Tata described the compact hatchback as available with both diesel and gasoline engines. The filing also called Indica the country’s largest-selling diesel car and the top-selling compact car in the Rs.300,000 to Rs.400,000 range at that time. Those are historical company statements, not claims about today’s market position or resale values.

Both were listed with a five-speed gearbox and seating for five. These specifications should not be treated as a complete description of every V2 sold later; secondary listings show more than one petrol and diesel engine under the Indica V2 name.

Why the badge is not enough
Older Indica advertisements, registration documents and online listings can group several years and variants together. Before comparing two cars, record the registration number, model year, engine designation, fuel type and variant shown on the registration certificate and other documents. Match the engine number and chassis details to the paperwork where possible. If the seller cannot explain a mismatch, pause the deal rather than assuming the listing is simply using a different naming convention.
Petrol vs diesel: the published numbers

CarDekho’s grouped 2001–2011 mileage page reports 17.88 kmpl petrol and 25 kmpl diesel as ARAI figures, plus city figures of 14.44 kmpl and 22.1 kmpl respectively. ARAI figures are standardized reference values. They are not a promise that a used example will achieve those numbers, and the page’s publication date is not stated.
What the mileage gap means
The diesel’s published advantage is large enough to matter for a driver who covers substantial distance regularly. It is not, by itself, proof that a diesel will be cheaper to own. An old car can lose its apparent fuel-cost advantage through condition-dependent repairs, poor maintenance, neglected servicing or a higher purchase price. A well-kept petrol car can be the better buy than a tired diesel, even before you consider local rules.
Use the figures as a comparison starting point, not as a promise. If two cars have different tyre sizes, engine versions, loads, routes or maintenance histories, their real consumption can differ substantially. Ask the owner for fuel records if they exist, but treat a verbal claim of exceptional mileage as unverified until you can test the car yourself over familiar routes.
Choose by annual driving, not by fuel type alone
Use a simple calculation rather than relying on a slogan such as “diesel is always cheaper.” Estimate annual fuel cost for each candidate:
Annual fuel cost = annual kilometres ÷ realistic kmpl × local price per litre.

Use your own distance and current local prices. The published mileage values above can be starting references, but they are not measured results for the cars you are considering. Then add the purchase price, insurance and registration charges applicable in your location, routine service, tyres, battery and any repairs identified during inspection. The cited material does not establish current fuel prices, transaction prices, repair rates or ownership totals.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor a clearer comparison, calculate each car separately and show the assumptions beside the result. Use a conservative consumption estimate rather than the best number in an advertisement. Then ask how many years you expect to keep the car and whether the diesel’s extra upfront cost, if any, can realistically be recovered through fuel savings. There is no defensible universal break-even distance without your local prices, annual kilometres, purchase prices and repair expectations.
When a diesel may fit
- You drive enough kilometres every year for the mileage advantage to be meaningful.
- The specific diesel has a documented service history and passes an independent mechanical inspection.
- Its registration and emissions status remain acceptable for where you live and where you regularly drive.
- The asking price leaves a sensible reserve for age-related repairs.
- Your trips and parking arrangements do not make ownership inconvenient or legally restricted.
When a petrol may fit
- Your annual distance is modest, so fuel savings would take a long time to offset other costs.
- The petrol candidate is materially better maintained or has cleaner documentation.
- Your local rules, transfer process or parking arrangements make the particular petrol registration easier to keep.
- You want to prioritize the condition of the individual car over the diesel’s published mileage advantage.
- The petrol car’s lower asking price leaves more budget for tyres, fluids and preventive work after purchase.
Inspect the individual car before comparing theoretical savings
Model-level specifications cannot tell you whether a particular used Indica is sound. Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection before paying a deposit. Ask the inspector to record faults in writing and separate immediate safety issues from items that can be monitored. A written report also gives you a fair basis for comparing two cars and negotiating, rather than arguing from a general reputation for petrol or diesel reliability.
Documents and identity
- Confirm the registration certificate, model year, fuel type, engine designation and variant.
- Check that the chassis and engine numbers correspond with the documents.
- Request service invoices, inspection records and evidence of regular fluid changes.
- Check whether the registration, ownership transfer and emissions requirements are current in your jurisdiction.
- Compare the seller’s description with the physical car; discrepancies are a reason to pause, not to guess.
- Ask whether any finance, ownership dispute, insurance claim or unresolved transfer issue remains; obtain documentary proof rather than relying on a promise.
Engine and driveline checks
- Inspect the engine cold, before the seller has had an opportunity to warm it up.
- Look for leaks, damaged hoses, loose wiring, unusual smoke and warning lights.
- Check starting behavior, idle quality, clutch engagement, gearbox operation and response under load.
- Have the mechanic evaluate cooling-system condition, belts, mounts and visible corrosion.
- On a road test, listen for abnormal noises and check braking, steering, suspension and straight-line stability.
- Confirm that the temperature remains stable during the road test and that the car restarts after it has warmed up.
Body, cabin and chassis
- Look for uneven panel gaps, mismatched paint, corrosion and signs of structural repair.
- Check doors, windows, locks, lights, instruments, seat belts and the spare-wheel area.
- Inspect tyres for age, uneven wear and matching sizes, then check the spare and jack.
- Ask whether water leaks or flooding have occurred, especially where carpets or electrical connectors show staining.
- Look underneath for fresh oil or coolant, damaged underbody sections and signs that leaks have been washed away before viewing.
An inspection cannot predict every future repair, but it gives you evidence to compare two actual cars. A lower advertised fuel cost is not a substitute for a sound vehicle. If a seller refuses a cold start, road test or independent inspection, treat that refusal as a material risk and be prepared to walk away.
Understand the engine specifications in context
Petrol: 1,405 cc MPFI and 75 hp in the 2005 filing
The MPFI gasoline specification in Tata’s 2005 table is a useful reference for a period V2, but it does not prove that every petrol Indica carries that exact engine or output. Verify the engine code and year on the car you are buying. Do not use the 75 hp figure to infer the performance of a different variant. A registration entry, chassis plate and service invoice together are more useful than an online headline that omits the engine designation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDiesel: 1,405 cc indirect injection and 53.5 hp in the 2005 filing
The diesel figure is likewise tied to Tata’s 2005 specification table. Secondary specification pages list more than one diesel engine under the V2 grouping, so confirm the exact version rather than assuming that every diesel has 53.5 hp. A healthy example and a neglected example with the same nominal specification can behave very differently. Check starting, smoke, idle, response under load and cooling behavior during the inspection instead of inferring condition from the engine type.

Oil and routine maintenance: verify the exact engine
Tata AutoComp’s recommendation sheet lists 15W-40 for its Indica diesel entry, while the Indica petrol entry has different recommendations. That sheet does not establish that one grade applies to every V2. Before buying oil, identify the engine and consult the owner’s manual or a manufacturer-approved specification for that exact vehicle. If you buy online, a search such as 15W-40 diesel engine oil may help locate products, but confirm the specification and quantity before ordering; current stock, merchants and suitability are not guaranteed by a product phrase.
Questions to ask the seller
- When was the last oil and filter change, and which specification was used?
- Are there invoices for cooling-system, brake, clutch and transmission work?
- Which parts have been replaced recently, and why?
- Has the car had prolonged storage, accident repair or use in unusually heavy traffic?
- Were any warning lights, starting problems, overheating incidents or smoke complaints repaired?
- How long has the seller owned the car, and can the previous owner or workshop history be verified?
Missing records do not automatically disqualify a car, but they increase uncertainty. Price that uncertainty conservatively and do not treat a seller’s verbal assurance as equivalent to documentation. Ask for duplicate invoices or workshop confirmation where practical.
Local rules can change the answer
Registration and emissions rules depend on the vehicle’s jurisdiction, registration date and current policy. The cited information does not establish a universal restriction for every Indica V2. Check the rules that apply to the exact registration before purchase, including whether the car can be transferred, renewed or driven in the areas you use.
This check matters for both fuels. A diesel with excellent mileage is not useful if its registration cannot be renewed where you live; a petrol car is not automatically compliant simply because it uses gasoline. Ask the relevant transport or emissions authority, and keep the answer with the vehicle documents. Confirm requirements again immediately before payment because policies and enforcement can change.
A practical decision framework
- Define your use. Write down annual kilometres, typical trip length, traffic conditions and the places where the car must be driven.
- Shortlist exact cars. Record each car’s year, engine, fuel type, registration, asking price and documented history.
- Check legality first. Confirm transfer, renewal and emissions requirements for each registration.
- Estimate fuel cost. Use current local prices and a conservative consumption assumption; treat the CarDekho figures as references only.
- Inspect independently. Arrange a cold-start inspection and road test by a mechanic who is not representing the seller.
- Compare total risk. Include known repairs, missing records, tyre and battery condition, and the amount of cash you can reserve after purchase.
- Verify consumables. Match oil and other fluids to the exact engine manual rather than copying a recommendation from another variant.
- Negotiate from evidence. Use written inspection findings and document discrepancies rather than bargaining only from the model badge.
- Walk away when necessary. Unclear identity, inconsistent documents, serious structural damage or an unwillingness to permit inspection outweigh a tempting mileage claim.
Petrol or diesel? Scenarios for common buyers
Low-mileage urban owner
If you drive relatively little, the diesel’s published mileage advantage may not recover the difference in purchase price or condition-related work quickly. A better-maintained petrol car can make more sense, provided it meets local registration and emissions requirements. Short trips and long periods of parking also make documented condition and easy local servicing especially important.
High-mileage commuter
A driver covering substantial, predictable distance can benefit from the diesel reference figures if the vehicle is healthy. Verify the actual car carefully; the mileage advantage disappears as a meaningful decision factor if the diesel needs major repairs. Build a repair reserve into the budget even when the fuel calculation looks favorable.

Budget buyer choosing between two neglected cars
Do not choose solely by fuel type. Compare inspection findings, documentation and immediate repair needs. If neither car can be inspected or identified confidently, postponing the purchase is safer than relying on a brochure specification. A cheap purchase price can become expensive if the first undisclosed repair consumes the money reserved for registration, tyres or insurance.

Buyer in a rule-sensitive city
Check the exact registration before discussing fuel savings. A car that cannot legally be renewed or driven in your normal area is the wrong purchase regardless of its quoted kmpl. Obtain confirmation for the specific registration, not just a general statement about petrol or diesel vehicles.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating “V2” as one fixed specification: the name covers multiple years and engine listings.
- Presenting ARAI or city figures as guaranteed results: CarDekho’s values are grouped secondary references, not a test of your used car.
- Buying on diesel mileage alone: condition, records, purchase price and local rules can dominate the calculation.
- Using an oil grade without checking the engine: the cited 15W-40 recommendation is associated with a diesel entry, while the petrol entry differs.
- Skipping an independent inspection: a visual walk-around cannot establish mechanical condition.
- Ignoring paperwork: an attractive price cannot fix an identity, transfer or emissions problem.
- Using one fuel-price assumption: ownership costs change with location and date, so update the calculation before signing.
What to take to the viewing
- A written checklist containing year, engine, fuel type, registration and variant.
- A request for service invoices and ownership documents before the appointment.
- A plan for a cold start and road test.
- Contact details for an independent mechanic or inspection service you select locally.
- A calculation sheet for annual kilometres, local fuel prices and identified repairs.
- A torch, phone camera and notebook for recording leaks, panel gaps, tyre wear and document details.
Verdict
The Tata Indica V2 diesel is the mileage-led choice on the published references: CarDekho lists 25 kmpl ARAI and 22.1 kmpl city, versus 17.88 kmpl and 14.44 kmpl for the petrol grouping. Those numbers make the diesel worth considering for sustained use, but they do not decide the purchase.
Choose the petrol when your annual driving is low or the specific petrol car is clearly better maintained and more suitable for your local rules. Choose the diesel only after confirming its exact engine and registration, verifying the documents, calculating fuel cost with current local inputs and passing an independent inspection. With an old Indica, the condition and identity of the individual car matter more than the fuel badge.

Should a low-mileage driver buy the diesel V2?
Usually compare the complete cars first. If annual distance is modest, fuel savings may take a long time to offset purchase-price differences or condition-related repairs. A well-maintained petrol with compliant registration can be the more sensible choice.
What should I check before buying a used Indica V2?
Confirm the registration, year, fuel type, engine and variant; match chassis and engine numbers; review service invoices; check local transfer and emissions rules; and arrange an independent cold-start inspection and road test.
Is 15W-40 oil correct for every Indica V2?
No. Tata AutoComp’s sheet lists 15W-40 for its Indica diesel entry but different recommendations for the petrol entry. Identify the exact engine and follow its owner’s manual or approved specification.
Can the mileage figures determine total ownership cost?
No. Total cost also depends on local fuel prices, annual distance, purchase price, registration, insurance, maintenance history, repairs, tyres and battery. Calculate those inputs for the individual cars.
What if the seller refuses an independent inspection?
Treat the refusal as a significant risk. Without a cold start, road test and independent assessment, you cannot compare the cars’ condition reliably, so walking away is safer than relying on the V2 badge or a mileage claim.
Do petrol and diesel Indica V2 cars face the same registration rules?
Rules depend on jurisdiction, registration date and current policy. Check the exact registration with the relevant transport or emissions authority before purchase; neither fuel type is automatically compliant everywhere.
The Bottom Line
The diesel offers the stronger published mileage reference, but the best used Indica V2 is the individual car with verified identity, legal status, documented maintenance and a successful independent inspection. Use your own annual kilometres and local prices to test the economics, then choose petrol or diesel on evidence rather than the badge.
