Use the oil your vehicle manufacturer specifies. Check the owner’s manual for the required SAE viscosity, API/ILSAC performance category, and any proprietary approval. If both conventional and synthetic oils meet every requirement, conventional oil can be a sensible lower-cost choice. Synthetic oil has shown better results in several standardized laboratory tests and may be especially useful for turbocharged engines, heavy towing, frequent stop-and-go driving, or very hot or cold conditions—but it does not automatically extend your change interval or suit a vehicle whose specification it does not meet.
The specification comes before the word “synthetic”
Oil selection is a fitment question, not a simple premium-versus-budget decision. The American Petroleum Institute (API) tells owners to follow the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations for oil viscosity and performance. Start with the owner’s manual, an official service-information system, or the labeling inside the engine compartment. The manual may specify all of the following:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- An SAE viscosity such as 0W-20, 5W-30, or 10W-40. The first part describes cold-temperature flow and the second describes viscosity at operating temperature.
- An API performance category and, where applicable, an ILSAC standard for gasoline engines. API’s current gasoline-engine guidance identifies API SQ and ILSAC GF-7 as current categories/standards, but an older vehicle may require an earlier category.
- A proprietary manufacturer approval or specification in addition to API/ILSAC. A bottle that merely says “synthetic” is not proof that it has the required approval.
API’s Motor Oil Guide and its Oil Categories page explain the labeling system. Use the vehicle maker’s requirement as the controlling instruction; a current category on the shelf is not automatically correct for every model year.
| Check in the manual | What to match on the container | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| SAE viscosity | The exact grade, such as 0W-20 or 5W-30 | Viscosity affects starting, lubrication, and operation across the engine’s temperature range. |
| API/ILSAC category | The API service symbol and/or ILSAC mark required by the vehicle | The category represents performance requirements beyond the base-oil label. |
| Manufacturer approval | The exact approval or specification number, if listed | Some engines require tests or properties not captured by a generic API/ILSAC statement. |
| Change interval | The schedule in the maintenance section, including severe-service rules | Oil type alone does not authorize a longer interval. |
What “synthetic” and “conventional” mean
Conventional oil
Conventional motor oil is refined from petroleum base stocks and blended with additives that control wear, deposits, oxidation, corrosion, and other properties. It is not inherently unsuitable or unsafe. When it carries the viscosity and performance approvals required by the vehicle, it can protect the engine as intended.

Synthetic oil
Synthetic oil uses more highly engineered base stocks and additive chemistry. The formulation is designed to maintain useful properties over a broad temperature range and under stresses such as shear, heat, and contamination. The label still does not replace the vehicle specification: a synthetic oil in the wrong viscosity or without a required approval is the wrong oil.
Blends and marketing labels
Products sold as synthetic blends combine base-oil types. “Full synthetic,” “advanced,” or similar marketing language can help distinguish products on a shelf, but those words do not tell you whether the oil meets your engine’s required SAE grade, API/ILSAC category, or proprietary approval. Read the specification panel first.
What the major comparison found—and what it did not prove
In a 2017 study, the American Automobile Association (AAA) compared selected synthetic and conventional oils in standardized industry tests. AAA reported that the synthetic oils averaged 47% better performance across the tests it conducted. The work examined properties including:

|---|---|---|
| Shear stability | Oil can lose viscosity when subjected to mechanical stress inside the engine. | Better stability can help an oil retain its intended grade during service. |
| Deposit formation | Heat and contamination can contribute to sludge or deposits. | Lower deposit tendency can support cleaner engine operation, but the test is not a lifetime guarantee. |
| Volatility | More volatile oil can evaporate at high temperature, increasing consumption. | A laboratory difference does not predict the exact consumption rate in your vehicle. |
| Cold-temperature pumpability | Oil must move quickly during a cold start. | Test performance helps explain why a formulation may be advantageous in cold conditions. |
| Oxidation-related behavior | Heat and oxygen can degrade oil and create by-products. | Resistance in a test does not eliminate the need for scheduled changes. |
The 47% figure is an average within AAA’s selected tests. It is not a claim of 47% longer engine life, 47% better fuel economy, or a universal real-world advantage in every car and driving pattern. The study does not establish a single oil-change interval that applies to all vehicles, nor does it override a manufacturer’s approval list. You can read the primary report in AAA’s Synthetic vs. Conventional research report.
When synthetic oil may be worth choosing
AAA’s summary highlights situations in which synthetic’s test advantages may be useful. These are conditional reasons to consider it—not blanket requirements. The manual’s specification remains the first filter.

Turbocharged engines
Turbochargers expose oil to high temperatures and substantial speed. A newer turbocharged engine may therefore benefit from a formulation designed for demanding heat and oxidation conditions, provided it meets the exact approval listed by the manufacturer. Do not infer that every turbo engine accepts the same viscosity or that every synthetic product has the needed approval.
Frequent stop-and-go driving
Repeated acceleration, idling, and short trips can create a demanding operating pattern. The engine may spend more time warming up and experience more thermal cycling than it would on steady highway runs. If the owner’s manual defines this as severe service, use the severe-service schedule regardless of oil type.
Heavy towing or high loads
Towing raises engine load and heat. Synthetic may be a sensible option when it is approved for the engine and the vehicle is operated near its towing or payload limits. Confirm the correct viscosity for the expected ambient temperatures; choosing a thicker grade on your own can be just as incorrect as choosing the wrong oil type.
Very hot or very cold climates
Cold pumpability and high-temperature stability matter more when temperatures are extreme. A synthetic formulation may provide useful margin in those conditions, but the SAE grade printed in the manual already accounts for the vehicle maker’s tested temperature range. Follow any regional or seasonal viscosity instructions rather than changing grades by guesswork.
When conventional oil is a reasonable choice
AAA’s study states that most vehicles can use either conventional or synthetic oil when the oil meets the latest relevant API/ILSAC specifications, while noting that some manufacturers also require proprietary specifications. Therefore, conventional oil can be appropriate when:

- The manual permits a conventional formulation or does not require synthetic.
- The bottle shows the exact SAE viscosity required for your engine.
- The API/ILSAC category and any manufacturer approval match the manual.
- Your driving pattern, climate, and load do not create a reason to prefer synthetic after you have checked the requirements.
- The lower purchase or service price helps you maintain the correct change schedule consistently.
Do not treat “conventional is cheaper” as permission to delay maintenance. An affordable oil change performed on schedule is generally more useful than a premium oil left in service beyond the manufacturer’s interval.

Cost: use historical figures only as context
Prices vary by region, vehicle, oil capacity, labor rates, and date. AAA’s 2017 consumer summary reported the following averages at surveyed AAA Approved Auto Repair facilities and for a five-quart do-it-yourself purchase:
| Service or purchase | Conventional (AAA, 2017) | Synthetic (AAA, 2017) | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Professional oil change | $38 average | $70 average | Surveyed facility averages from 2017; not a current quote. |
| DIY oil, five quarts | Approximately $28 | Approximately $45 | 2017 approximate retail observations; your engine may require a different quantity. |
These numbers are historical observations, not present-day national prices. Obtain a current price for the oil quantity and specification your car actually requires. A vehicle that takes six or eight quarts, uses a specialty approval, or has an unusually accessible or difficult filter will not match a five-quart or average-service comparison. AAA’s consumer explanation is available at AAA’s engine-oil study summary.
How to choose the right oil: a step-by-step method
- Identify the vehicle precisely. Record model year, make, model, engine, and market. Different engines in the same model year can require different grades or approvals.
- Open the maintenance section of the owner’s manual. Find the normal and severe-service oil recommendations, not just a general fluid chart.
- Write down every requirement. Note the SAE viscosity, API/ILSAC category, proprietary approval, oil capacity, and any wording about synthetic oil.
- Decide whether your use is severe service. Check the manual’s definition for short trips, extensive idling, dusty roads, extreme temperatures, towing, or repeated heavy loading. Use the severe schedule if your driving matches it.
- Compare eligible products only. Eliminate any bottle that misses the required grade or approval. Compare synthetic and conventional oils after compliance is established.
- Account for operating conditions. If both types comply, synthetic may offer useful margin for turbocharging, towing, stop-and-go use, or temperature extremes. For ordinary use, conventional may be the lower-cost option.
- Confirm the quantity and filter. Buy enough oil for the specified capacity, including the filter change if the manual’s capacity assumes one. Use the filter type and replacement interval the manufacturer specifies.
- Record the service. Write down date, mileage, oil grade, specification, and quantity. This prevents uncertainty at the next service and helps identify consumption or leaks.
Can you switch between conventional and synthetic?
The available evidence does not support a claim that switching from conventional to synthetic harms an engine. In ordinary use, the important conditions are that the replacement oil has the manufacturer-specified viscosity, performance category, and approval. Switching does not, by itself, change the required oil-change interval.
Switching from conventional to synthetic
- Verify that the synthetic product matches every manual requirement.
- Install it at the normal service, using the specified quantity and a new filter if due.
- Keep the same manufacturer-recommended interval unless the manufacturer explicitly states otherwise.
- Check the dipstick after the first drive and periodically afterward for level, leaks, or unusual consumption.
Switching from synthetic to conventional
- Do this only if conventional oil is permitted for your engine and meets the same required specifications.
- Do not switch to save money if the manual specifically requires synthetic or a proprietary synthetic formulation.
- Continue to use the normal or severe-service interval that applies to your driving.
There is no need to perform a special “flush” solely because the oil type changes unless the vehicle maker directs one for a separate problem. If you are unsure whether a product carries a required approval, choose a clearly labeled product or ask a qualified service professional to verify it.

Synthetic oil does not automatically permit longer intervals
Oil-change timing is determined by the vehicle manufacturer’s schedule, mileage, elapsed time, engine-monitor system, and severe-service guidance. AAA advises drivers to follow that schedule. Synthetic oil’s resistance to certain stresses does not cancel contamination from fuel, moisture, dust, or combustion by-products, and it does not account for an engine that is consuming oil or leaking.
Use the shorter or more demanding schedule when the manual calls for it. If the vehicle has a variable maintenance monitor, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for resetting and interpreting it; do not extend the interval simply because the last fill was synthetic.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Choosing by type instead of specification
Symptom: The bottle says “full synthetic,” but the SAE grade or approval is absent or different from the manual. Correction: Return to the manual and match the complete requirement. Type is a secondary choice.
Assuming a newer API category fits every engine
Symptom: A current API label is treated as universally interchangeable. Correction: Check the model year and the exact category the manufacturer lists. API SQ and ILSAC GF-7 are current gasoline-engine categories, but the vehicle may call for another category or a proprietary approval.
Extending the interval after switching
Symptom: The owner adds thousands of miles because synthetic was installed. Correction: Keep the published interval unless the vehicle manufacturer explicitly authorizes a different one.

Using a thicker oil to solve a problem
Symptom: A driver selects a higher-viscosity grade to mask consumption, noise, or low pressure. Correction: Use the specified grade and have the underlying issue diagnosed. A viscosity change can affect lubrication and emissions-system operation.
Ignoring the severe-service schedule
Symptom: Frequent short trips, towing, or extreme temperatures are treated as normal use. Correction: Read the manual’s severe-service definition and follow that interval, regardless of whether the oil is conventional or synthetic.
Buying too little oil or the wrong filter
Symptom: The level is low after service, or the filter is not the specified type. Correction: Confirm capacity with the filter installed, use the correct filter, run the engine briefly, wait on level ground, and recheck according to the manual’s procedure.
A practical decision matrix
| Your situation | First decision | Likely choice when both options comply | Important caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manual requires synthetic | Use the required synthetic approval and viscosity. | Synthetic | Do not substitute conventional to reduce cost. |
| Manual permits either; ordinary commuting and moderate climate | Match viscosity and API/ILSAC or proprietary approval. | Conventional can be reasonable; synthetic is optional. | Maintain the scheduled interval. |
| Turbocharged engine | Confirm the turbo-engine approval and grade. | Synthetic may be worthwhile. | Do not generalize one turbo model’s requirement to another. |
| Frequent stop-and-go or short trips | Check whether the manual classifies the use as severe service. | Synthetic may provide useful margin. | Use the severe-service interval if specified. |
| Heavy towing or sustained high load | Verify the approved grade for the load and temperature. | Synthetic may be worthwhile. | Oil type does not raise the vehicle’s tow rating. |
| Very hot or cold conditions | Follow the manual’s temperature-based SAE guidance. | Synthetic may be advantageous if approved. | Never select a grade solely from general climate advice. |
| Budget is the primary concern | Find the lowest-cost oil that fully complies. | Conventional, if permitted. | Do not save money by postponing the change. |
What the evidence cannot tell you
There is no vehicle-independent price saving, universal change interval, or guarantee that synthetic oil will produce a measurable fuel-economy or engine-life improvement in your particular car. The 2017 AAA comparison is useful evidence of test-property differences, but it is not a prediction for every engine, climate, oil brand, or maintenance history. Current product formulations and prices also change, so read the container and verify the vehicle requirement at each purchase.
The most defensible answer to “Is synthetic worth the extra cost?” is therefore conditional: it can be worth paying more when the vehicle requires it or when your approved choices are used in demanding conditions. If your manual allows either type and your driving is routine, a compliant conventional oil can protect the engine without paying for a benefit you may not need.
