Verdict: Swytch’s front-wheel conversion kits can give a compatible conventional bicycle pedal assistance without replacing the whole bike, but fit and installation details matter, and the long-term evidence remains limited. In Kevin Purdy’s 2023 Ars Technica review, he reported riding more than 400 miles with Swytch kits since his first installation in January 2022. Both kits supplied to him developed a mechanical issue that required support; his independently purchasing in-laws had no reported installation problems at their local bike shop. That is useful ownership experience, not a controlled durability test or a guarantee of what another rider will encounter.
The review covered older AIR and MAX configurations. Swytch’s current product family and battery options have since changed, so its historical prices, battery figures and product names should not be mistaken for today’s lineup.
What a Swytch conversion kit does
A Swytch kit turns a conventional bicycle into a pedal-assist e-bike by replacing one wheel with a wheel containing a hub motor, fitting a sensor near the crank to detect pedaling, and mounting a battery or power pack. The system also needs its wiring and, depending on the configuration, a display. The manufacturer’s current GO kit page lists a power pack, charger, pedal sensor and motor wheel among the included items.
It is a conversion rather than a complete replacement bike: the result depends on the bicycle that receives the kit. Fork and axle type, wheel and tire dimensions, brakes, frame clearances, and the mounting positions available on the handlebars and frame can all affect whether the parts fit and how straightforward installation is.

What the long-term review actually found
More than 400 miles, with a small sample
Writing in 2023, Ars Technica’s Kevin Purdy said he had ridden more than 400 miles with Swytch kits since installing his first one in January 2022. He reported a notable mechanical issue with each of the two kits supplied to him, both of which required help from Swytch support. He described the staff he dealt with as friendly and knowledgeable, while making clear that his interactions could not predict every customer’s support experience.
Purdy also reported a different outcome for his in-laws, who bought kits independently: their local bike shop installed them without reported problems. Taken together, these accounts show that the reviewer encountered support-worthy issues while other installations in his family did not produce reported trouble. They do not establish a failure rate or prove that the kits are either generally unreliable or trouble-free.
Older AIR and MAX batteries in the 2023 review
The Ars review discussed earlier-generation AIR and MAX batteries. Its stated ranges and prices are historical details from that review, not current offers or specifications for the newer GO family.
| Older configuration in Ars’s 2023 review | Battery capacity reported | Claimed range reported | Historical price information reported |
|---|---|---|---|
| AIR | 90 Wh | 15 km (9.3 miles) | Part of the review’s reported kit-price range of $550–$1,200 |
| MAX | 180 Wh | 30 km (18.6 miles) | Part of the review’s reported kit-price range of $550–$1,200 |
Ars said the kits it reviewed cost $550–$1,200 at the time, or as much as $1,500 without a pre-order sale. Those figures describe the review-era market, not current Swytch checkout prices.

How far can a Swytch battery go?
Range claims vary by product generation, and advertised range is not the same thing as a measured outcome on every rider’s route. Swytch’s support page, accessed in 2026, lists these capacities and claimed distances for the current GO family:
| Current GO-family pack | Capacity listed by Swytch | Manufacturer-claimed range |
|---|---|---|
| GO | 180 Wh | 15–20 miles |
| GO+ | 310 Wh | 30–40 miles |
| GO++ | 378 Wh | 45–60 miles |
These are manufacturer figures, not independently verified typical results. A Cycling Weekly review of a GO+ in 2025 reported a 280 Wh battery, 30–40-mile range and 2.5 kg weight. That capacity differs from the newer support-page GO+ figure, so the two reports should not be blended into a single specification; they refer to versions or information that are not established as identical.
Swytch’s support page also gives older-generation figures: AIR at 2.6 Ah and 10–15 km, and MAX at 5 Ah and 20–30 km. It lists approximate pack weights of 0.7 kg for AIR and 1.1 kg for MAX. These older figures are not interchangeable with the GO-family Wh capacities and range claims.
Independent experience with older AIR and MAX kits
A Cycling Weekly comparison of older AIR/MAX kits said AIR’s 700 g battery was stated to provide 15 km, while MAX’s 1.1 kg pack was designed for about twice that distance. The reviewers found the kit worked particularly well on a lightweight, two-speed steel bike. On a heavier hybrid, their MAX battery delivered somewhat less than the promised 30 km. They identified bike weight and terrain as factors in range. This is useful context for why a claimed distance should not be treated as a route guarantee, but it is not a test of the current GO-family packs.

Will a Swytch kit fit your bike?
Not every Swytch kit fits every bicycle. Swytch says its GO motor wheel does not fit thru-axle forks, while its MAX+ range is compatible with thru-axle bikes. For the current GO wheel, the manufacturer specifies tire widths of 28–64 mm and excludes fat tires and very narrow road tires. Check the exact bike with Swytch’s compatibility checker before ordering, then verify the specific configuration rather than assuming that one model’s fit applies to another.
- Axle and fork: Confirm whether the bike uses a thru-axle or another fork fitting, and match it to the kit’s stated compatibility.
- Wheel and tire: Check wheel size and tire width against the exact motor-wheel specification.
- Brakes: Confirm the wheel and brake arrangement are compatible with the bicycle and kit.
- Clearance: Look for space around the crank for the pedal sensor and magnet ring, and suitable locations for the battery, wiring and display.
- Handlebars: Check whether the supplied display mount suits the bar shape and available space.
Swytch rates its standard motor wheel at 250 W and maximum torque of 40 Nm. Those are specifications for the standard wheel described on its current product page; they should not be treated as legal approval or assumed performance for every model or jurisdiction.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How difficult is installation?
Installation involves more than swapping a wheel: the pedal-assist sensor must sit in a workable position by the crank, and the wiring and other components need to be mounted and secured. In a May 2025 MAX+ first-ride account, Ebike Tips/road.cc described the sensor and magnet ring as the fiddliest part. Some frames did not leave enough clearance, and the reviewer modified the sensor mount on some installations. The account also noted that the display is designed for flat handlebars and may not mount directly on a drop bar.
That experience does not mean every installation needs modification. It does mean sensor clearance and display fit are worth checking before purchase, especially if the bike has unusual frame geometry or drop handlebars. If either is uncertain, a local bike shop can assess the bicycle before you commit to the kit or attempt the installation.

Weather, temperatures, warranty and support
Swytch describes the kit as IP6-rated and says it can be used in heavy rain. The manufacturer warns that cracks or other damage to the power pack, or extended submersion, may compromise its water protection. Its guidance is to avoid frequent riding below −5°C, charging below 0°C, and storing the pack below −10°C. These are Swytch’s statements and recommendations, not independent weather-resistance testing.
Swytch’s current product page states that its one-year warranty begins on delivery and is activated by submitting photographs or video of the installed kit. The manufacturer also says onboarding provides lifetime technical support, including one-to-one video calls. These are the published terms and support offer; they do not establish how a particular warranty claim will be handled.
Current availability, prices and local rules
Do not use the 2023 Ars price range as a current quote. A May 2025 MAX+ first-ride article reported UK recommended prices of £999 for MAX+ and £1,250 for MAX++. Swytch’s current product page says a waitlist is no longer required as of December 2025, but the available evidence does not establish today’s checkout price, delivery estimate, regional taxes or stock. Check those details for your location and chosen configuration before ordering.
E-bike conversion rules depend on where the bicycle will be used and on the exact kit configuration. Cycling Weekly’s 2026 conversion-kit guide directs UK readers to government guidance. Check current official rules for your jurisdiction rather than assuming a kit is legal everywhere; a motor’s stated power or torque alone does not settle that question.
How to decide whether a Swytch kit makes sense
A conversion kit is most promising when the bicycle is a good fit, the installation can be completed cleanly, and the battery’s expected range suits the rider’s actual route. Compare candidate configurations using these practical questions:
- Will it fit? Use the manufacturer’s compatibility checker and verify axle, wheel, tire, brake and frame details for the exact model.
- Does the range suit your rides? Compare the pack’s capacity and stated range with your needs, while allowing for differences in bike weight, terrain and version.
- Can it be installed on this bike? Check sensor clearance, wiring routes and display mounting; factor in help from a bike shop if any of those are uncertain.
- Do the current terms and logistics work? Confirm the warranty process, support offer, regional price, delivery estimate and stock directly with Swytch.
- Is the intended setup allowed where you ride? Check current official local requirements for the specific configuration.
The available evidence supports a qualified judgment, not a universal verdict: Purdy’s account demonstrates substantial personal use and responsive support in his cases, but also two support-worthy mechanical problems in the kits he received. Other reported installations had no stated problems, and separate reviews highlight real fit and range trade-offs. Whether a Swytch kit is a sensible conversion therefore depends chiefly on the particular bike, the chosen product generation and the rider’s route.
